View Full Version : College Friendly System?
I am going away to college this fall, I was wondering what would be good system to take to college to play when I get bored. I have a gamecube and playstation 2 that I might take. I was wondering what you system you guys find good to take to school with you. I am leaning towards gamecube since 4 controllers for it already. Any input would be great.

You should take whichever system is your fave. Personally at other people's houses I tend to play Madden and the like or action RPGs so the PS2 was popular. But at my house my Saturn Bomberman has been the favorite. Techmo Superbowl for NES is another popular one. Ah, college. 8-)

Hmm, anything that wouldn't kill you if it got stolen. My guess would be to take along a classic Macintosh with some preinstalled games; nobody would touch it! :D
Somebody from the forums had their TG16 pissed on... O:
Somebody else (in the news) had their XBox shot with a 9mm (and that's what you get for putting the volume too high during finals week!)

Xbox, simply for the LAN capabilities, plus there are 4 controller ports built in. Second would probably be Gamecube, which is also LANable, but to a much lesser degree, and also has four controller ports. As far as the classics go...only take what you don't mind getting fucked up.
A moded Xbox is damnn goodif you can afford it and figure out how to use it. As far as Older systems, nes would make a great choice.

Dreamcast.
You can pick one up cheap still on eBay, Gamestop, and EB. It has 4 controllers, some good multiplayer games (Sonic Shuffle if you like Mario Party, the 2K series if you like sports) It may not be up-to-date as far as sports games go, but it works.
Plus, most models should work with a book disc and some discs with emulators on them. It may not emulate as many consoles as the Xbox AFAIK, but you don't have to do all the heavy modding and putting extra money in it.

I used to take my Xbox, PS2, Gamecube, Gameboy Advance and Dreamcast. Now I take my Xbox for Halo LAN play and one of my spare NES's. People from all over the dorm brought back NES games with them and just came down our room and played. But, my 2 roomies did have a PS2 and a Gamecube, so we still had all the modern systems there.

cube
here are practical reasons why
- size, if you are living in a dorm, space is a premium
- the handle, you can use this to secure your system so that its harder to steal
- popularity, being the least popular system of the three current machines, you can safely assume that other people will bring a PS2
Thanks for all the help so far. Do you guys have any recommandations on carry case for gc or dc? I am debating on gcand dc since brother would probaly just give me his dc cheap. Also recommandations on multiplayer games for either system.

My vote would also be for a modded XBox, which is odd since I've never modded any of my systems. But I think the emulation scene makes the XBox a perfect choice.
Wanna play Halo? Go ahead...wanna play Super Mario Bros. 3...yeah, we can do that too... :)
One system, that can act like 10...seems like a deal to me.
Unless you do emulation on a computer you can bring...in which case, I'd go for the Cube ;)

Xbox (http://www.xbox-scene.com/)
Some good multi player games for the dc are
Ooga Booga
NFL 2k2
San Francisco Rush 2049 (The Stunt Mode Rocks)
Chu-Chu Rocket (Maybe A little to weird but its cheep and fun)
Power Stone 2
Worms
Street Fighter
Soul Caliber
Marvel vs Capcom
Mars Matrix ( May be too hard though)
Virtual Tennis
Test Drive V Rally
Test Drive Le-Mans
Well thats all I can think of for now, god the dreamcast rocked! :rocker:

i would definitely buy an xbox if i were you. you'll be guaranteed to take some awesome memories with you when you graduate. xbox is my least favorite of the current systems, but for college it is perfect. i was in college for about 9 months and we had a blast with 16 player halo every weekend. if you don't want to buy a new system though then i would take the cube since the odds of one of your roommates bringing a ps2 are probably greater.

I would say a Dreamcast. Here's why:
Cheap. $29.99 at a Funcoland. You and your buddies can spill beer on it one night and you don't have to worry about losing much cash. Although it will probably still work once it dries out!
Emulation: Ok, it can't run NeoGeo games at full speed. But what it can do is run NES and SMS games perfectly, as well as Colecovision and a bunch of other consoles. All of this without any type of mod chip. Just burn a disc and go.
Popularity: I really don't think the other guys at school will have a DC. They all probably will think it's a "has-been"...until you show them all the cool stuff you can do with it!

I have to agree with zektor (nice to see you back around more!) The DC is the one console I always have hooked up in the living room and it never fails to impress people when they play it.

Not to sway from the original topic, but yeah, it's good to be back around more often! I had some time off this week/weekend to putz around and this place is always my first stop! Good to see you again man!

I have two choices, varying based upon your movie playing needs.
1) If you have a DVD player, use a VCR, or don't really care about watching flicks (though that was one of my favorite activities in college), the N64 is actually a solid choice. 4 player ready, durable cartridges (though the control sticks wear out rather quickly) and a nice library of relatively cheap titles makes for a load of fun. My college career occured in the dawn of the 32-bit age and even though I had most of my games with me at school, I still played the heck out of the 64. Especially multiplayer. Mario Kart, F-Zero, Goldeneye, Mario Party... the 64 has some of the best examples of split screen gaming. Add the excellent Mario 64 & both of the Zelda titles and you are all set. If you like to party, the N64 is a blast.
2) The other solid collegiate choice is the PS2. It may lack durability in both the software and hardware realms, but it has gotten relatively affordable now in both those areas, so it kind of balances out. It is also an especially good choice if you like sports games or are into Square's bloated "epics" (neither of which are my thing). On the bright side, there are a decent amount of games for everybody in its library, and the entire PSX canon is available if you need to meditate upon some glorious 2D (This may be the best part). Plus, to tie in the movie playback angle, its a somewhat rudimentary, yet functional DVD player. I guess the only negative would be if you were totally into Halo and the FPS genre in general. XBox is a better choice better there. It depends upon how mainstream you are.

Interesting topic.
First, I would suggest looking at what you currently play a lot of. If you play one of the systems you already have a ton, bring it with you. It won't cost you anything extra, and you already have games for it you like.
Secondly, I would look at where you are living and how secure you feel it is. If you are living in a dorm, you may not want to bring a PS2 with 50 new games for it -- it's too tempting for someone to borrow a game or two and never give it back.
Thridly, I would look at how much you plan on partying at college. You also don't want to bring your PS2 if you plan on being involved in tons of drunken beer bashes, or it will get thrown up on, peed on or have a beer poured in it eventually.
I have heard a LOT of good stories from people that brought an NES to college. From four player classics like Super Off Road to drunken runs on Track & Field, (and everyone's heard of it, and chicks dig it -- seriously!) the NES is a pretty solid option and you can get new games for it cheaper on average than a PS2 or GameCube title. You could even afford to take a NES and another system -- like your PS2 or GameCube.
And I'll always vote for the Dreamcast too!

When I lived in residence, there was an N64 that was hooked up in our lounge at all times. Everyone played Mario Kart and Goldeneye 4 player matches whenever they could. In fact, it annoyed me that they played it so much, as it tied up the TV. It is a solid choice, though.

The one vote I would have against the N64 is that I took one with me to the camp that I worked at and while it was in constant use, at the end of the summer the four controllers I had all had completely useless analog sticks, and no one had purposely abused them. If you go with an N64, get four thrid party sticks without that problem and leave the nice N64 ones for yourself :D
