I bought a Super NES today with the intent of reselling on eBay.
I get the thing home and it only displays black and white. I thought it was either the RF or the AV adapters, I tried both, and both yield the same results.
Other than that, the picture is perfect and so is the system. I have never ever heard of anything like that before, anyone know what would cause something like that and how it could be repaired inexpensively?
Thanks again!

I can't offer any help with fixing it, but i can say that i have seen an SNES that had this exact same problem.

So yours isnt the only one.

See if it's internal Rf shiled is shorting anything out. Take it off and test.

This is a stupid mistake I've made before, but have you checked to make sure it was switched to the right channel (either on the tv or the snes)? I had one that was black and white and just about chucked it, but then I looked and it was switched to channel 4 on the console instead of 3 :embarrassed:

I've had 2 with the same problem.

I'd really like to know what it is, I couldn't figure it out. :o

Ok, now how exactly would I do that? I'd need a tool designed for those SNES screws right?

Yes, indeed you do.

Please DO NOT take this personally.. BUT>>

/rant on

This is a pet peeve of mine here. People ask about how to repair a system, and then balk at opening the unit up. @_@

I am sincerely sorry, but I have no magic wand. Screwdrivers and gamebits are almost always a pre requisite.

Just for the record.........I have no problem opening anything up. You're talking to a guy who when he was 8 ruined an NES on Christmas morning by opening it up to see how it worked.
I've stuck red hot soldering irons in both my N64 and SNES so I could play Japanese games. This SNES cost me $15 at a junk store with the intent of reselling it on eBay for god sakes. If I destroy it, I'm not going to cry like a 5 year old. I'm a big boy, and I've been around the inside of more than one console in my day.
Don't assume that I'm scared to open it because I asked about the screws ok?

That's good and all but why'd you ask such an obvious question about needing the gamebit in the first place? ;)

I'm guessing you needed to know -what kind- of bit, that would be a 4.5 MM Gamebit, easily found at MCM Electronics, Ebay is an alternative.

Did you miss what I said? Here it is again:

Please DO NOT take this personally..

That generally means that it is not meant as a general personal insult towards you in particular, but rather as a general comment on some of the responses I get around here. It's very frustrating to occasionally type out an extended solution to a common problem, only to have the question asker respond with something like "I don't have a screwdriver".

So once again, it was a general rant, and not a slam against you specifically.

*sigh*

Hey all,

I'm not familiar with the whole NTSC system and how it works in the US, but have you tried another AV / Scart lead? and have you tried running the snes thru your VCR then just use the VCR thru the TV??

I'm in the UK so we have to use specially adapted scart / AV leads to run the US snes!.. here in the UK..

Not sure if any of that will help? but it's there for you to try, let me know i'd be interested in what happens?

SCART doesnt exsist here in the states.

Outside of A/V, RF, Composite (or RGB), or S-Video there isnt another way to hook up a game system.

From the experience i had with one of these SNES systems i think it was an internal color problem and not a video connector issue.

Here in the UK we call AV, a scart... here is a link, have a look and see if where talking about the same item??

No, SCART connectors don't exsist here :( I've never seen a TV with that kind of connector actually made for sale in the United States.

A/V or "Audio Video" is a seperate RCA cable for Audio and Video. I think the proper term is "component". Basically...yellow, white, (and if stereo) red connectors.

Thanks for the help guys. I actually still sold the thing on eBay for about $15 plus $10 shipping anyway so it's all good.

Thanks again.
