View Full Version : Most re-released game?
downfall

I'm speaking of direct ports here (or direct ports with graphical upgrades and no other fundamental changes). The game can be included in a collection or whatever, so long as the entire original game is included. I'm not speaking of multi-system releases ie. Mortal Kombat II which was released at the same time on several systems. What single game has been re-released the most? Just a bit of trivia I was curious about.
I know Super Mario Bros. is way up there:
SMB - NES
SMB All-Stars - SNES
SMB DX? - Game Boy Color
SMB - GBA
SMB - Famicom Mini
SMB - Animal Crossing
and I'm sure a few more that are slipping my mind. I can't think of any others aside from Pac-Man, but I'm sure everyone else can.

Tetris maybe? That's gotta be the most cloned game at least if not the most ported.

How about Space Invaders? Not only was it re-released a bazillion times for the 2600 with different labels, I'm sure almost every system has a variations of it.

Get real guys, it's Space Invaders or Tetris. SMB? Not even close... is there a system out there that doesn't have Tetris?
Jibbajaba

Yes he is saying direct ports, not variations. Are any two tetris titles direct ports of eachother? I think Tetris worlds is the only title that was released on multiple platforms without much if any variation.

Puzzle Bobble/Bust-A-Move has to rank up there as one of the most re-released games.

Sega Genesis = No Tetris 4 U! @_@

OMG, has to be Pac-Man or MS. Pac-Man. There have been like a gabillion Pac-Man games. Too many to list. Has to blow away number of SMB and Bubble Bobble ect. I agree that Tetris has a fair amount, but still thing Pac-Man blows that away as well.

Dragon's Lair has to be high up on the frequnantely ported list.
NES (??? Is it actually a port of the game or a crappy side scroller like the snes vesron?)
Gameboy Color
3DO
Jaguar
Sega CD
CDi
Laser Disk
PC
DVD

All the Madden games.
They can come out with 100 versions of the game (I think its a goal actually) but the core gameplay will never really change. Each release is really just a roster update with a few minor graphic updates

Emerald Dragon has about 5 releases:
X68000, MSX, FM-Towns, PC-Engine, Super Famicom
Falcom Games (Legend of Heroes, Y's, etc.) have traditionally been released on all the systems above, plus more. Y's, I believe beats them all:
MSX
PC98
X68000
Famicom
Master System
PC-Engine
Saturn
Win32
PS2
Of course the latter ones are more remakes than re-releases.

SMB DX? - Game Boy ColorThen that one doesn't count. It has a lot of changes to it and Graphics ain't it.
SMB- Nintendo Vs.If we go on what downfall said, I don't think we can count that one either. It has a lot of level changes in it.

Adding in MAS2600s post, I can say that Shinobi appeared nearly as many places as that (sticking to non-Japanese releases unless it was the only version, I guess, to be fair, since nobody mentioned the FDS SMB disks or the cart version):
Arcade original, SMS, Sega Mega Tech, NES, PC-Engine, ZX Spectrum (Sinclair) - 6 that come to mind
Makaimura and Daimakaimura are right up there, too; Daimakaimura (Ghouls 'n Ghosts) appeared on both the SMS and Genesis, and hit the Spectrum as well (so did Ghosts 'n Goblins).
In other news: Watching the cursor spell out "Shinobi" = fun (http://www.shinobi-game.com/)

Oops, forgot the C64, Atari ST, Amiga for Shinobi...and I'm sure the Makaimura games were on those as well.
Add another for SMB, for Japan - that crazy PC-8801 title from Hudson Soft, as well as x68K versions (it seems).

I don't think it would be Mario Bros/Super Mario Bros. since AFAIK neither one has been officially available on a non-Nintendo system since Nintendo started making their own systems.
Pac-Man, on the other hand, has been available on every major console since the Playstation in a Namco Museum, and was available as a standalone game on previous systems.

I just finished doing a small write up about this game on my blog.

Check it out if interested.
I also have read that there is a 'slightly off' version of just Mario Bros. for the NEC 8801. I have not seen that one anywhere.

Hmm, links to the World of Stuart page are always nice. Just realized that he's potentially got a problem in saying the PC-8801 is "obscure," though, as NEC owned the majority of the PC market in Japan until Windows SX came onto the scene.

Sure! Any system that had its heyday before 1989.
My vote goes with either PacMan or Ms. PacMan (A game that my kids just discovered and are now playing endlessly!)

Why would you be? I did mention it on the previous page!
Also, I don't think the PCE version was the first release. The SMS version was definitely before the PCE version came out, and I'd wager the MSX version was before that.

Much as I like the x68K, I don't have any evidence there was a SMB on it...I'm pretty sure I was looking at a page last night, but whetever I saw that was an x68K port, couldn't have been SMB. Heh.

Yes Ys was first on the MSX. Your missing a few Ys that were released over the years.
I thought SMB for the X68000 was called under the Famicom Collection or something like that. Maybe they only had a regular MB or something? I could check if anyone wants.
