Hmm...I'll bet this topic has come up before, but I'm kinda curious as to games people bought and either dissapointed or just got lost in the shuffle and then, after a time, you pick it pack up and realize it's a pretty decent game.

I've got two. First being the infamous "Moble Light Force 2" for PS2. As a shmup fan, I dillegently picked this up on release day and played it for a little while, but I got so caught up in the crippled presentation of the game (y'know, the fake Charlie's Angels artwork and the lack of tate mode) that I never spent much time with the game.

Well, I checked it out recently and damn if it isn't a pretty cool shmup. Part of the reason I'm enjoying it more now has to do with playing it on a big screen TV. One of the importaint aspects of the game is keeping your tension level high which is accomplished by coming as close to enemy fire as you can without getting hit. It's really hard to do that on a normal TV and you can't play it in its correct vertical aspect thanks to that feature being removed for lawsuit happy USA. However, if you can play on a large TV (and if you can ignore all the story being stripped out, but who plays a shmup for story line anyway?lol) it's quite a fun game.

The other one is another bargan bin shooter, Starfighter Sanvein(PSX). The first time I played it, I thought it was like a shmup in a bumper car arena filled with ice. Well, actually it is, but it required more patience to get into the control. I was expecting a more straightforward blaster so I put this one down for a long time.

When I came back to it, I discovered quite a fun little game in there. While it isn't going to win any awards for graphics, it's quite the frantic game when you get the hang of the controls. What I first though was a busted control scheme turned out to be what made the game fun. Your ship slides around and recoils from the fire and that's what makes it challenging. You've got to learn how to maneuver your ship first, then the game opens up.

So, what games got better for you after you re-discovered them?

Blast Corps 64.

When I first played this game I thought it was stupid and way too hard (I didn't give the game nearly the amount of time it deserved). Shoot forward to last year, I'm getting back into playing N64 games and I give it another shot. I spent the next several weeks completing the game with all gold metals and having a blast.

This is one of the best n64 games I've ever played. Addicting as hell and pretty tough.

Reactor. I used to be completely mystified by that game. I loves it now. :D

PDF has the best avatar ever.

I never saw what the big deal was with Tetris when it came out in the arcade. I hadn't played any puzzle games yet so the point escaped me. You didn't shoot anything and the graphics were a moot point. C'mon, they're blocks. Eventially I took a quarter reserved for Joust and gave it a shot. It took all of 3 lines before everything became clear.

I understood.

Yeah, MLF2 is actually kinda cool. There's one ship that you have this Darth Maul light-saber sort of weapon...neat.

Games that got better for me upon 2nd, 3rd, and (even) 4th chances:
Castlevania SOTN
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Quake 2 (PSX, the N64 version was awesome from day one)
Disruptor (PSX)
Raystorm (PSX)
Yars Revenge (didn't like it as a kid, like it now)
Super Mario 64

I used to OWN that game but traded it in. I have no clue why I did, either. Ugh. I remember it being awesome, too. The designs struck me as a bit silly even back then and the levels a bit too much (especially one where you start on a train - wtf?) but it's still good fun.

Shooter: Space Shot is a pretty neat game. I like the boost and the beam system, though the missile and machine gun could use some work.

A game that took me a few tries to warm up to, would probably be Lode Runner, of all titles. Couldn't stand it for the longest time, then I picked up an NES copy and had a blast.

I used to hate Monster Party for the NES as a kid, but only because I couldn't figure out how to beat the first level. :o Now I love it! One of the strangest games ever. I finally avenged my childhood by beating it, too!
