Well this one hit me by suprise .. I had no idea that there were apparently two Sonic games in the pipeline for the Saturn that never saw light of day ...

Sonic Fighters and Sonic Extreme. Hmmm ... Sonic Fighters could have been interesting, although it doesn't really fit in with the Sonic image. Sonic Extreme sounds like a working title .. it's a bit, um, crap for a real title. Unless it were a 'Sonic does Skateboards and BMX Skillz' type game. That would be quite amusing. Someone should do that :D

The Sonic the Fighters promotional goods are no doubt for the Model 2 arcade game. I've been recently going through all (yes, all) issues of Sega Saturn magazine for any goods on unreleased games.

While Sonic the Fighters was announced for the Saturn and not released, I've yet to find a single shot of it in the mag, nor a progress report (which to me means it wasn't that far off the ground). Anyways, around 1996, it was still in the arcades, and home conversions were merely speculation.

Sonic Extreme is a lesson in what happens when you let dev houses other than Sonic Team try to develop a Sonic game. Sonic 3D: Flickie's Island is another one. Yeah, there was some politics and shit involved, but that should be lesson #1 -- crap like that rarely happens in Japan. Had they given it to to Sonic Team, it would have come out.

FYI: The reason ST wasn't able to do the project? Burning Rangers.

Sonic Xtreme looked awesome. Check out the lostlevels.com site, they've got an article about the game and why it didn't come out.
