Turbografx advice needed!

I'm getting ready to purchase a TG16, but, I can't decide whether to pick up the Turbografx 16 with the CD attachment or to get the Turboduo. Has anyone in here had any bad expierences with either. Any help would be helpfull!

You can't play CD games on a TurboExpress. That's the handheld.

IMO, get the Duo. Better looking and the CD unit is becoming harder and harder to get. Plus the Duo has the system3.0 card built in.

I'm usually playing devil's advocate on this one.

I would go for the Turbografx-CD stack + system 3.0 card.
1) My personal opinion - the Turbo CD is a more reliable drive.
2) No AV cable sticking out of the SIDE of the unit.
3) No proprietary AV cable. Just use a standard 3-RCA cable!
4) No GIGANTIC wall wart power supply like the Duo. Just one small cable powers the whole unit.
5) Cheaper (as well as controllers/accessories)
6) Gives you a chance to boot up Dracula X with a System 2.0 card to see what happens. Worth it for this alone!

Just my 2 cents, from someone who has owned both.

This is fact, it was manufactured during a time where reliability and quality were more an issue before speed could ever become a consideration. At 400$ retail it was built like a tank.

I have an audio cd player from around '88 or so that still works.

I say avoid the Duo like the plague. They break down way to easy.

If you look hard enough you can get a PC Engine/Turbo Grafx 16, cd addon and system card for the price of a Duo.

I've NEVER had an issue with the Duo....I highly recommend them. It'll save you a lot of cash and space IMO. I guess if you're super hard on your systems the CD unit might be better....but I'd go for the Duo.

Of course it's entirely up to you, I have a Duo and it has always worked great, but I've heard a lot of people say they've had problems with theirs. It probably is cheaper to get the Turbografx system with the cd attachment and system card though. Here's the thing I've always been unclear on. The Duo has memory built in for saving games, but does the cd add on? I don't see why it wouldn't but I'm just not sure. I've tried looking this up but have never been able to find out for sure. If it doesn't you may need to take that into consideration also.

The base unit for the CD add on (the one that the CD-ROM and TG16 both fit into) has internal memory, just like the Duo, yes. I'd say it will cost you very close to the same amount for either setup, as a TG16 + CD ROM w/base + US Super System 3 card is a $150+ package, and a Duo runs $150-200.

The main problem I see with going the CD attachment route is that the System Card 3.0 is hard to find and generally expensive when you do find one ($75+ on ebay, and you have to outbid everyone else looking for one!). I'd go the Duo route, its easier to find and you can find one for about the same price or lower than a TG16, CD and 3.0 card. Another problem is that the CDs aren't always complete, especially when it comes to the power supply. I see a lot of CD auctions where something is missing, but the power supply is near impossible to replace. TDZ doesn't carry then anymore.

I've never had a problem with my Duo, and I play orginals and backups on it.

If you really want the full Turbo experience, get a Duo with a region mod switch on it (D Lite installs them - PM him) or buy a Japanese Duo and a US Turbo. That will all ow you to play Hucards for all systems. Keep in mind you can run Jap or US cds on either Jap or US systems. Only the Hucards are not interchangeable. There are a ton of great game for the PC Engine, especially if you a re a shooter fan.

I've had about 3 or 4 of them in the past and all of them have died. Only one of them I really played much. I have had 3 US ones and 1 JP. I'll basically never own an NEC system again and just play the cds on emulators.

I think I'm probably gonna go with the Turbografx + CD.
A, Just for the pure nostalga
B, Since they are older tech, if I have a prob with either I ca just replace the one part, if the cd unit on the duo dies I'm stuck with a half dead unit.
C, The thrill of the hunt, the joy of piledging ebayers for a system 3.0 card!

what does happpen when you play castlevania x with the 2.0 card?

You get this really cool super-deformed castlevania level that looks a LOT like how Sega did Vectorman. Then at the end of the "level" you get the message that you need the System 3.0 card.

So where can you get a AC Adaptor for the tubo grafx cd? Does the cd adaptor power both the base system and the cd or do you need both adaptors? I'm guessing you only need one but unfortunatley my cd's on the way without the adaptor. Help me.

Just one adapter... but good luck finding one; I spent a month and $25 to get one for mine that came without an adapter originally :/

I have a spare one for a Japanese Duo. I have no idea if they work on a US cd system.

Nope, the ac adaptor for the turbo grafx cd is different than the duo. I guess it requires a lot more power like 11V 1530 mA. Anyways are there any custom ac adaptors or adjustable ones you can dial in exactly the amperage you need as well as the voltage?
