I'm close to getting my first cab, an excellent looking Star Castle.

Thing is, I have to pick this game up and bring it back home, resulting in close to an 8 hour round trip. I have no idea how to move one of these things.

Is it ok for them to sit in any position other than upright? What's the best way to transport them?

The best way, of course, is upright in the back of a covered truck. Seeing as how not many have one... next would be upright in the back of a pickup with good straps. You can move them on their side, but BE SURE to check inside the cab for things that aren't secured. You'll find cabs with transformers or any other random thing in there just floating around. If they move when you tilt it, they could smash the tube, the PCB, anything. If everything is properly secured you shouldn't have any problems laying the cab down. I have a station wagon and move my cabs on their side, haven't had a problem yet.

Also consider buying some shrink wrap to protect the game. Grainger supply store carries some stuff that is about 2 foot tall and pretty tough. Go around the entire game several times with the shrink wrap, then follow it up with packing tape around the shrink wrap. Tape anywhere that there is a change in the angle of the game as well as about every 6 to 8 inches down the height of the cab. That will keep the wind from tearing up the shrink wrap.

Be careful with tarps or other loose coverings as they can beat the sides of the game and cause wear on the artwork, or worse (my Sinistar had a large amount of paint knocked off of it by a loose tarp).

Chad - Regarding station wagon transportation, I was concerned that there wouldn't be enough room for a cabinet (I've never actually taken measurements inside mine). What make of wagon are you driving and is there enough space to get a full-sized machine in there without any damage at all? Especially the slightly larger full-sized machines?

Subaru Legacy Outback, 1997. If you fold the seat down and lay the cab down sideways, it works just fine. You have to tie the door down but it's only open like a foot. I moved this cab in it without an issue, and I believe this is along the lines of the slightly larger cab you're describing. The only issue I could see with damage, in my wagon anyway, is making sure you slide it in with something covering the latch and such so that you don't scrape the cab.
