Which company made the best unlicensed NES games? Not counting Tengen, because they would win easily.

Well, it certainly WASN'T Active Enterprises.

i dunno about companies on the whole, but micro machines is by far my favorite unlicensed nes game.

Not counting Tengen, Camerica, easily. Ever played Ultimate Stuntman? Pretty snazzy.

Agreed, Cap'n. None of those other companies even hold a candle to Camerica's work, which I would venture to say includes many of the best games on the system, period.

It's quality not quanitiy that sells the games. Sure you can be unlicenced and produce quality games which people will buy on word of mouth and other reviews. What other games did they make?

@Kaine:

Quattro Sports, Quattro Adventure, Dizzy, and Bee 52 to name a few. Which I might add, quite a few people have.

Oboy, time for me to be anal.

If you want to be technical, and more all-inclusive, as far as DEVELOPERS go, the Panesian stuff was by Hacker International. A.V.E. had outside help, such as Sachen, Odyssey Software, and Idea-Tek (aka Super Mega, aka [I think] TXC). Some of the Color Dreams games were developed by Sachen also. And if you want to go all the way, BIT Corp. did a couple games that HES released (Duck Maze, Jackpot, and Othello come to mind).

STILL, though, with all that said and done, Codemasters. No contest.

Did Camerica do Micro Machines also, or was that just Codebrakers?

@Kaine: WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

I was just asking who brought Micro Machines out, that's all....

Camerica.

Alright, who's the wise guy who actually voted for Active enterprises?! That's really sad, AGCI made some decent games and get no votes at all, but Active, makers of utter SHIT actually get a vote for being the best!!!?? WTF

I actually voted for AVE. I have my reasons.

Camerica's games are all eyecandy and little substance, with a few games breaking that mold (Ultimate Stuntman, Quatro Arcade's Dizzy game). Make no mistake, both AVE and Quatro made some really terrible games, so I took into consideration only the good games made by each company. It came down to what I consider the best two by each company. Using my star system.

Quatro Arcade: ****1/2
Ultimate Stuntman: ***1/2

Dudes With Attitude/Trolls on Treasure Island: ****1/2
Krazy Kreatures: ****

Close to be certain.

And the worst... Color Dreams. This DUDs for you. Hell, even Action 52 could get one star. Of course, every dog has their day: Spirital Warefare by Wisdom Tree was an easy ***1/2, making it the best title by them.

I voted for Color Dreams/Wisdom Tree (although, Bunch should be listed in the same line as these two). Mind you, they also created some of the worst games, but I was greatly surprised to find out that all of those other star systems in P'Radicus Conflict were really there & not merely window dressing. Wisdom Tree's Bible Buffet seems to have some of the best voices in an NES game that I think I've heard (and the gameplay isn't bad, either).

Camerica merely released the games in the US. The real talent behind it all was the Codemasters guys here in the UK. They converted some of their most popular franchises (Dizzy, Seymour etc) from the home computers onto the NES. I remember the ruckus back then when Nintendo tried to stop them from releasing the carts unofficially in Europe, especially the Game Genie.

Though admitedly Micro Machines never came out on the 8-bits, it was originally an Amiga title I think...

Hehehe..

Even with Tengen, I would have voted for Camerica.
Dizzy and Micro Machines!

I voted for AVE. I have a few of their games and the only game I don't enjoy is Deathbots. Even then, I know someone who loves that game, for whatever reason, lol. It would have been better with a more fair difficulty level and less cheap hits. IMO....Double Strike is a fair shooter, even if it is lightweight 'kids' stuff. Dudes is a fine game and Pyramid is a good puzzle game if you actually sit down and can master it. Fitting together some weird shaped pieces is a decent challenge.

To paraphrase the Rock, 'who in the blue hell is American Game Carts?' I know the catalog for those other companies but not AGC. What did they even do? I feel dumb asking but I've seen and/or own games (don't own Panesian, though) from every one of those companies except AGC.

Shockwave is their most popular game.
Don't know about any others, possibly one or two other games.

it's a tough call. I enjoy many of the games from all of those companies. I will say though, Camerica and AGCI had some of the nicest graphics seen on the NES. Ultimate Stuntman for example, looks really nice. If AGCI would have released Crossbow (yes I have seen screens) it would be up there too...those graphics look really nice as well.

I think it would have been much more interesting if you had included Tengen. Camerica vs. Tengen: that would have been an interesting poll. And no, Tengen wouldn't win "easily" as you have presupposed.

Camerica/Codemasters. And I also would have picked that over Tengen given the choice. Some good games are Micro Machines, Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy, Dizzy the Adventurer, Linus Spacehead, Firehawk, Ultimate Stuntman, Bee-52. Fun times. Not forgetting the great value Quattro games as well.

Another vote for Camerica.

I have only played wisdom tree and Camerica games, so Camerica by a mile, bee 52 rules.

Camerica/Codemasters, regardless of whether Tengen is included or not. Codemasters made some of my favorite [NES] games, so even if we compared these unlicensed companies to the companies that created licensed games, I would still vote for Camerica ;)

Camerica also, nice graphics and corse the cool games like Micro Machines and Dizzy's but i like Linus alot also.

Definitely Camerica. Micro Machines was a better game than 90 percent of the licensed stuff, and Linus Spacehead was fun too, but unforgivingly *hard*!
