I thought Full Throttle came out...I had a demo for it.

Yes, 3-D killed the point-and-click adventure. Ron Gilbert, the team leader for both of the original Monkey Island games, talks about it here:

http://screen7.adventuredevelopers.com/agdzine/interview_rong.htm

He seems to be saying some things in this interview that I've felt for a long time. Adventure games like these were the format where games were there most "artistic"...they had GREAT storylines, a lot of humor, and infinite possibilities for getting into trouble! It's really sad that they're dead; they're sort of a lost art form, and I fear we'll never see interactive storytelling presented in that form ever again. It's all about 3-D, violence and titties now. Unfortunately, I think we have Sony to thank for this They wouldn't import any games into the U.S. that weren't 3-D when PS1 came out. They could suck, but they couldn't be 2-D. They also pushed to make gaming more mainstream by advertising in dance clubs, putting the Chemical Brothers in game soundtracks, etc.

The latest big thing is the "crime" genre. Everybody's trying to remake GTA. It's very easy to get someone's attention by putting a lot of shocking images on the screen. It's getting real old now.

I agree. Point and click adventures where the best. Thats all I played when I was a kid. I grew up in Fresno, which is near Oakhurst (where Sierra was located) and my best friend's dad was a programmer for Sierra, so he got all the space quest, police quest, and king's quest games for free since he worked on them, so I used to play them a lot. Later, I played Day of the Tentacle and Monkey Island 2 and they are still two of my favorite games. I have a DOS box that I keep just so I can play those old sierra games, and DOTT and MI2 both run great in windows xp using SCUMM.

I want another sequel to Maniac Mansion, dammit. I love the original and Day of the Tentacle. I also loved the ICOM Simulation games, if they count as "point and click". Unfortunately, this is one genre that has no chance in hell of being revived. But I wouldn't blame GTA for this; yes companies are making lame ripoffs in the hope of cashing in, but the reason GTA is so fun is that it is fun to play. I don't play it for shock value, I play it because it's a great escape from reality to drive around a realistic, teeming city doing absolutely anything I want. You know, the kind of shit that'll get you locked up or killed.

I also liked games like King's Quest, but they were a bit too difficult for my tastes. Games like Maniac Mansion had a great sense of humor and puzzles that made perfect sense and were a true experience. I never felt as sucked in by a game like King's Quest as I was by Maniac Mansion.

The options for "getting into trouble" were far from "infinite." The things they allowed you to do in those games were extremely finite. All puzzles had one solution, and you had to figure out which possible solution the designer had in mind, or you weren't getting anywhere.

Linear, boring, and with a penchant for pigeonholing players into the narrow solutions that they happened to implement. The wane of this genre really isn't a huge loss. It's much better that they've incorporated the elements of this genre into other game-types that are quite a bit more solid in their design and implementation.

I think adventure games will end up as dead as interactive fiction - in short, not dead at all, really, just supported by an esoteric fan base.

You only have to look through some recent postings at Underdogs to see how this may be so. The likes of 5 Days a Stranger, Garfield: Attack of the Mutant Lasagna, Ozzie and the Quantum Playwright, Cirque de Zale, Maniac Mansion Deluxe, and even The Mystery of Time and Space may only be the beginning.

The Adventure Company still makes point and clicks. Admitedly some of them are better then others.

It may no longer be Lucas Arts and Sierra's era of adventure gaming, but point and clicks are hardly dead. They're just temporarily out of fashion. I'm sure they'll be back eventually, probably once progress in 3D technology slows down a bit and developers can adjust to the graphics technology we have and explore some more creative avenues of game development.

That said I can't wait to get Syberia 2 for XboX. (:

I miss the old point-and-clicks myself. Part of their charm was examining everything on screen if it was useful or not, and sometime sgetting something funny said to you in return by the character. Once I redo my system I'm going to sit down a bit with the cds someone here sent me with old point-and-click games from Lucasarts and Sierra.

The two I really still want to play are Full Throttle and Grim Fandango. Anyone remember Return of Zork?

I couldn't agree more with this assessment. I have no love for the likes of Loom or King's Quest. I do remember Maniac Mansion as an example of the genre done right. That is there were multiple puzzles exclusive to the characters and their abilities, with different outcomes and endings available.

Unfortunately that was more the exception than the rule and I couldn't help but get irritated at the aloof nature of designers expecting you to conceive threading a frog through a needle to catch a crackwhore (insane random example there).

Then again I'm more an action junkie and if I want a story told to me I don't want to sit and stare trying to figure out some puzzle, breaking the pace. (IE rather read a book or watch a movie)

I love point and click adventures. I've been a fan since I was young playing titles such as King's Quest, Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist, The Adventures of Willy Beamish, Full Throttle, and now recently playing titles such as the Broken Sword series and Escape From Monkey Island on some of the more recent consoles and PC. Great stuff! Hope those adventures never die!

There are still some good adventure games made. The Longest Journey is a classic, and I just recently finished Runaway after working on it for a while.

I have Runaway, it's pretty good but something about it just seemed off. Wasn't it developed in Mexico or something? I think it read like the writers didn't speak english natively. Still a decent game though.

And someday I'll find the time to sit through Longest Journey... I always get to the other world and lose intrest. Which is strange because I loved the first part of the game.

Well, a quick look at my avatar will probably answer that question :D

Its a real shame games like Loom, Monkey Island and Grim Fandango(just to mention a few) aren't made anymore...

And yes I used to be a big LucasFilm\LucasArts fan ;)

These dayz point and clickers are dying off. The sequel of Monkey Island is not a point and clicker :o , nor is Grim Fandango.

In response to this post (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=65704):

As someone mentioned before, Beneath a Steel Sky (http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=114) is an excellent, excellent Adventure game. The folks who made it, Revolution, actually released the source code to the ScummVM team, who in turn released the game as freeware. Click here to get it. (http://www.scummvm.org/downloads.php#extras)

AGD Interactive also produced some very well-done fanmade remakes of King's Quests 1 and 2 which you might like.
http://www.agdinteractive.com/

For something a little more humorous, check out Maniac Mansion. A group called LucasFan remade this one as well, which you can check out right here. (http://people.freenet.de/lucasfangames/maniac/games_eng.htm)

While you should definitely check out the games previously mentioned by others here, you should also check out the Gabriel Knight and Police Quest series. You're probably going to have to end up buying many of these games folks have mentioned either from Amazon's used sections or ebay, if you're not fond of the whole abandonware deal. If you like Point-and-Click Adventure games however, you should find it money well-spent.

Yes I miss the adventure game genre. I'd like to get some more stuff like grim fandango, under a killing moon[no mouse, but still an adventure game], and kings quest.

Sometimes I just prefer a story

These days to get that sort of thing, you gotta play an rpg.

I liked some adventure games, but too many of them made NO SENSE WHATSOEVER.

Why would I ever think to mix the monkey fecees with the sandpaper and roll it in the lioncloth before tossing it into the well?

I miss the era more than the games themselves really. I love playing them (I have a bunch of Sierra stuff too that I received not too long ago from a friend), but I have zero desire to play new stuff in the genre.

Huge fan here! I grew up with these and even ancient text adventures. The early ones required alot of imagination more like reading a book as opposed to just watching the movie. Much greater sense of accomplishment than most flinch hold-your-hand type games of today.

The value of a lot of these games especially complete can run you a pretty penny still today.

Excellent but dated: Mean Streets, Tex Murphy, Amazon by Access

Expensive as hell: Master of Dimensions, Chewy, Nippon Safes

What, nobody here mentions Leisure Suit Larry??

Sweet god, back in junior high a friend of mine and myself played through part 6 over a weekend. I can't remember ever laughing that hard. All those old sierra games were such a blast to play. Midway, Capcom, and Atari are throwing out retro collections like there's no tommorow. Where the hell is the Sierra Classics DVD?

They also pushed to make gaming more mainstream by advertising in dance clubs, putting the Chemical Brothers in game soundtracks, etc.

You can blame 3D (among other things) for the death of the point-and-click genre, but you can't blame Sony. PACs were never a significant genre on consoles, but Sony itself published Discworld and Discworld II in the PS1's early days.

As for PAC gameplay elements, I don't miss pixel hunts and indirect control of a character, but I do miss the detailed storytelling (really the only reason to play them anymore., as puzzle-solving has been incorporated into virtually every genre). Only RPGs come close, but they always suffer from Japanese cultural perspectives and wonky English localization.

Complete agreement here...I mean, it's true. All of it. Pixel hunting sucked, even in Fallout 2 (and that was just for more items).

Can't wait for Fallout 3; let's just hope Bethesda does it right.

I was also a huge fan of point and click games back in the day. I've still got many of them in my possession. My favorites were Full Throttle, DotT, Maniac Mansion, Loom, the Indiana Jones games, Sam & Max, Monkey Island games, the Dig, Kyrandia, Xanth, Sherlock Holmes, and many others.

For those interested in modern point and click games, you could check out the CSI and Law & Order games. They're not true point and click games, but they are somewhat similar.

Also, I noticed that someone mentioned ScummVM. There's also a Pocket ScummVM available - I installed it on my HPC and it works without problems, although I haven't spent too much time playing around with it yet. There are also various point and click adventures available for mobile phones nowadays as well ;)

EDIT: I almost forgot Discworld!! That was an awesome point and click game, up there among the best of them. If you haven't played it yet, you should really give it a try! :)

I practically grew up with Point and Click adventure games. I think I must've gotten it from my brother or something, but I ended up being the real fan in the family.

Space Quest, Quest for Glory, King's Quest, Police Quest... pretty much anything with "Quest" in the title except for Quest 64.

Leisure Suit Larry, Sam and Max, Day of the Tentacle, Indiana Jones, and of course Monkey Island. All awesome.

For some reason, I never got around to playing Grim Fandango, although I've heard good things. Although I'm very nostalgic about those kinds of games, I'm not sure how I would feel about a revival.

I do miss them. My favorite point-and-click adventure is Legend of Kyrandia 2: The Hand of Fate. Perhaps the only one I was able to complete from start to finish without cheating (i.e. reading a walkthrough), yet still pretty challenging and funny. It also has tons of personality, which helps quite a bit.

As far as new ones are concerned, I check out http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/ from time to time. Good games aplenty.
