I've got Gradius Galaxies (sweet) and Phalanx (maybe I'll learn to love it) and I'm looking forward to R-Type 3 (missed it the first time around). But am I correct in discerning a complete lack of vert scroller shmups for my "leettle friend"?

OMG! Treasure is porting Radiant Silvergun to GBA! Working Designs has been translating it for five years! Acclaim is going to publish a thousand special edition bundles each with a pack-in miniature Jack Russell Terrier! :infinity:

I know of 2 upcoming GBA vert shmups, (both from Europe BTW). Here are some links:

Invader (formerly known as Kaisertal)

Iridion II (different from the 1st, check the links)

That may be what you are looking for. :)

Yep, that's the stuff I'm talking about. Cool. After reading those sites, I looked up the original Iridion 3D at gamefaqs and saw that it was generally unloved. Are there any other vert scrollers that are out right now?

As much as I love vert scrolling shmups, I dunno if I could play them on the GBA's squat little screen. If the layout was more like the Wonderswan, where you can actually flip it on it's side and still have all the buttons, that would work.

I know people were making vert shmups before they started putting tate mode in, but I guess I've been spoiled. Plus, I think if you blew a GBA screen up to TV sized, it's wider but shorter.

Still, I welcome any new qualty shmups. Hmm...the thought of a portable M.U.S.H.A. is intriguing...(too bad it'll probably never happen.)

They should really port axelay and Einhander over to the GBA. I don't know how well axelay's vertical levels would work out on the small screen, but I think a thoughtful 2D-3D hybrid based on Einhander's gameplay/level design would be really fun and good looking to boot.

As was mentioned earlier, the Game Boy Advance isn't well suited to vertically scrolling shooters. Having said that, I've got to admit that Invader was pretty well done... a little too hard for its own good, but loaded with powerups and even a few new ideas. Rounds are affected by the time of day, and you even get the chance to talk to the bosses before you battle them, but only if you choose to do so.
I'd like to see a Game Boy Advance translation of Radiant Silvergun myself. Call me crazy, but I think it could be done if the characters were redesigned as sprites.
Speaking of portable shooters, how did Zarlor Mercenary on the Lynx turn out? I've always wondered about that game.

Wow--maybe Radiant Silvergun on the GBA isn't just a fever dream...

If it happens, I guess I'll have to really learn the combo weapon system, unless I can install 3 extra buttons on my GBA. I never could hold A and C at the same time on a Saturn pad.
