A friend of mine pointed this FAQ out to me today which states the following:

NOTE ON SHADOWRUN VERSIONS
--------------------------
There are currently two versions of Shadowrun that have been released in the United States. The main differences are in the dialog, and it is almost
impossible to distinguish between the two while playing. The best way to tell the two apart is to talk to the tired customer in the Grim Reaper Club (the one who takes the Iced Tea). When asked about Grinder, in one version he says "Morgue Guys" and in the other version he says "Chop Shop" guys. These two terms will be used to distinguish the versions -- "Morgue Guys" and "Chop Shop." The main difference is that the Chop Shop version has more explicit dialog, with many more graphic and sexual comments than in the Morgue Guys version. Aside from this, there are a very few game play differences, but any ones I have found are carefully noted. If you come across any that you do not think are mentioned here, please email me: Admiral1018@yahoo.com.

So is this real or bullshit and is there any physical differences to the carts?

This won't be very helpful, but I recently was reading through an old Nintendo Power and the screenshot shows "chop shop guys." I'll look for it more later, but it's not in volume 48 (Batman Returns SNES cover issue). Should be in one later than that.

the snes and genny version of shadowrun are two COMPLETELY different games programmed by two different developers, so you;ll soon find everything is different when you compare the two...

I know the game supposedly recieved a revision after it was on the market. At one point GoodSNES claimed that one of them was actually a prototype, but I don't think that's correct. I compared the two versions a bit before but couldn't find any differences. I guess this turned out to be one of them. If the earlier version actually is a prototype, it was from late in the development process as everything else that got changed/censored that appeared in magazines is the same in both versions.
