I just found out about this (yeah, probably ten years after it was discovered) but haven't tried it out yet.

There's a hidden mini-game in here. Go to the setup screen and change player 1's name to "PODPLEASE", and press B. When you start the game you'll go to a mini shooter instead of the race.

Does it work?

Hmm, never tried that in the Genesis/MD version, but I remember that the Amiga Lotus games also had hidden mini games like this, accessed by entering certain names. I can't remember any details off-hand, but a quick Googling should turn it up.

Yes it does work. The game, "Pod", is pretty cool, and gets to be very fast on higher stages. You control a little gunpod that can move freely at the bottom half or so of the screen. Different enemies with different patterns fall from the top of the screen. It reminds me a bit of Megamania (2600) on fast forward! It was good enough that i picked up an extra copy of Lotus II for a friend who also likes shooting games when I saw one at a local shop. :) He liked the Pod games as well. It should be mentioned that the actual Lotus II game is good as well. :P

You have to enter a space between the two words "POD PLEASE" to get the code to work. A pretty good shooter....plays like a mix of centipede and galaga. I remember buying this game and Tyrants (enter JOOLS for a Sinistar clone if I recall correctly) specifically for their hidden games after reading about them in a gaming magazine. Both are pretty good.

Just tried it out. Right, it's POD PLEASE.

Sixteen different enemy types, the screen looks a lot like Gridrunner or a 2D Beamrider. Defnitely worth trying if you own this cart.

Cool. I just picked this up yesterday at Gamestop, so I'll have to give it a try. Thanks for the info!

never tried this one and recently found it at gamefaqs
PS1: Philosoma
Bonus Game
To play the hidden Phalanx game hold Start + Select on controller 2 while the game is booting (Note: This only works on early releases of the game).

this one works!
Genesis: Red Zone
Asteroids Mini-Game
To play a secret game of Asteroids, enter ABCACACBCAC as a password.

Wow, I actually remember playing that back when I bought Lotus 2 after it first came out. I traded it in or something years back, but I did recently repurchase the game for next to nothing at Gamestop. I'll have to give that Pod game another spin the next time I pop Lotus 2 in.

er... actually, that looks like the code for the ps game Zero Divide that opens up Tiny Phalanx, an abbreviated version of the SNES shooter.
