Check this out:

I haven't personally tried it, so I have no idea if it works or not.

Have any of you found any other console modifications like this? I've been looking for a way to make my (PAL) SNES region free, but I haven't had any luck yet :(

It is possible to mod a PAL SNES to install a 50/60Hz switch, and to make it region free. Ta-da:

As long as you've got a steady soldering hand, they're not too hard. Make sure you've got a grounding clip of some kind though, because I managed to fry a couple of SNESs with static when I was trying this a few years back :(

They won't make your SNES play every US/Jap game because some of the later releases had extra fiendish region checks, but it'll open up the vst majority of imports to you, and allow you to play all PAL games in 60Hz.

I just burned those tabs out in my snes and import games play like a dream.

It works like a charm, and it is easy to do.

Also a fairly old technique. I remember reading about doing that towards the end of the SNES's life. Great regional lockout, right?! :D

The N64 does the same thing.

That mod has been around for at least 10 years. I haven't played a lot of Fami games on my SNES, but the handfull that I have work fine.

I know I did it to my boyfriend's SNES 1 worked like a charm, model 2 SNES tabs are harder to cut though they don't rip off as easily, so the inside of mine looks a little fucked... >.>

But eh, who looks inside the cartridge slot anyway.

What portnoyd said. That's a really old mod job, and it's the standard method everyone uses. I've done it to both a model 1 and a model 2, and it's as easy as can be. There are no problems associated with it either since the only "lockout" comes from the shape of the plastic carts and the system's slot.

Thanks anagrama for the info - I'll try it out as soon as my exam period ends ;)

Will this modification require an alternate power supply? Or will the usual PAL territory power I use be sufficient? I have only recently started looking into console modding, and thus I am pretty much clueless :o

No, a standard PAL PSU will still be fine.
I think you'll need a SNES/N64/GC RGB lead to properly display a 60Hz image, though. I can't remember if that's necessary, but it's certainly recommended anyway since it's a massive improvment over RF or AV. I picked up a cheap 3rd Party Gamecube RGB lead that works like a dream.

I just bought a super famicom game. What's the best way to remove those tabs?

yep, did it to my snes a long time ago.
Just pinch and twist the tabs off with a pair of needle nose pliers.
EUREKA! the door to the super fami library has opened!

A pair of pliers and tape did the trick for me. A friend of mine burned his out and damaged the gate a bit though (d'oh).

I have heard that some models of SNES actually had metal tabs inside of the plastic to prevent this easy mod. Not sure if it's true or not.

Well considering that Both the Super Famicom and the US Snes are basically twins!, the only difference being there shape and carts.

I laughed when i first read that all you had to do was remove the 2 plastic bits in order to let a super famicom cart slide in with out any problems!! (like some one else mentioned) a cheap ass lock out! system ooowwwwweeeee

When i first got a US snes back in 92' that was one of the first things i did so i could play the latest Street fighter II titles! as well as a few other fighters and racers Mario Kart, and F-zero (Jap versions) spring to mind! ahhhhhhh those were the good ol' days!

( The original SF2 was out first on the super famicom In the UK on import, it went for £130 "cart only" and people bought it @_@ )

But at the time that was the sweetest game! and everyone went wild for the championship code letting you play ryu VS ryu etc, etc, etc...

I don't think there were ever, any metal bits in the US snes to stop easy mods! i'V modded a ton of them and never had any problems ( maybe i was just lucky  )
