well, it finally happened. i've sold every system i've ever bought, and each has been a minty fresh time capsule/museum piece of the cream of the crop for that particular era. my 2600, NES, SNES, genesis, and dreamcast collections are all sorely missed - the usual "something new! ah, i don't need this! besides, i have the emulator." scenario...so i started building up my library of old PS1 games, and got a nice collection of about 50 rare/mint/non-greatest hits titles together, and then reazlied it was no fun to play with, since 40 hour games like FF are no fun to pick up and play. ;) so except for my GBA and a few PS1/PS2 games, i've sold a bunch of those PS1 games for more than i paid, and just had the $$ sitting in my paypal account for a rainy day.

my girlfriend has a rather large NES collection, which is something i thought about adding to, since lots of her stuff is rather run down from being a public use unit at her business. then it hit me today, when i was thinking of getting my uncle's mint 1st rev. genesis out of his attic and picking up some games on ebay and building my long lost genesis collection anew (itching to play gunstar heroes and moonwalker...plus i've always been a diehard sega arcade nut), but everything is in deplorable/incomplete shape. except the japanese games (in most cases), that are either taken care of by japanese kids (who don't practice spelling on the labels) or US collectors. so after finding a mint/complete MD version of gunstar heroes, i searched to see if i could snag a japanese MD out of curiosity, and found one in AZ in perfect shape in the box (with all the original packaging) for $65/shipped. probably a bit high, but the only NTSC japanese unit i could find in the states on the 'bay...

jumped on it, and now i'm hopelessly addicted...i've got MD carts of sonic 1, gunstar heroes, outrun, DJ boy, space harrier 2, and forgotten worlds on the way. moonwalker, after burner, burning force, TJ&E, SF2, virtua racing, super hang-on, and strider are in the works...

i think i finally found something i'll hang on to and treasure...

Nice start .. but I guess I had better warn you that you may find you have an expensive time ahead of you if you get too into the Megadrive collecting malarky. There are some seriously pricey games out there, and some real tricky ones to find too ... for example, if Gunstar Heroes got you thinking of the other Treasure games then you've got Alien Soldier ($200ish) and Yu Yu Hakushu ($100+) to think about. And, of course, there are a ton of pricey shooters.

But on the bright side, at least the cover art is generally far better, so you get something that actually looks good into the bargain :D

I'd say you've got the prices for Alien Soldier and Yu Yuu Hakusho backwards, but yeah, expensive stuff there.

That sounds like a good price on an MD. I just got the same thing from Dojosky for $80 (new box and such) so you probably beat the average ;P

yeah, i did some preliminary looking around to see what i was getting into... ;)

most of them are pretty reasonable ($5-10 US), but i did cough up 50 bones for a mint/complete copy of GH (actually in the states)...kinda sucks, since shooters are my fave, X_x but i did want to get into the whole "collecting" bit...

are there any reputable online retailers so i'm not bound to ebay all the time (EMS gets expensive on single games)?

also, do i need a step-down converter for the voltage, or will switching to a 110v US genesis adapter work?

Feel free to mess around with Game Choice Club (http://www.gamechoice.com.hk/) but be forewarned that I got tired of their...incompetence. They are honest, though. I'm pretty sure of that. I think you paid too much for that Gunstar Heroes, honestly. Check out their prices, anyways, and make sure you hound 'em for condition.

Depends on which version you're talking about. Jp Alien Soldier goes as high as $200-300, and Yu Yu also goes for around $150-200 in mint. But the prices fluctuate a lot on them on eBay and such. It's hard to give a definitive value, but I'd say around $150-200 each easily for the Jp versions.

I would guess that if we are talking about the Japanese Megadrive, it would be Rockman Megaworld that you would want rather than Megaman Wily Wars (which is the PAL version)

As for Alien Soldier / Yu Yu Hakushu .. I got slightly over $100 for my Yu Yu Hakushu a few months ago. And I notice mad-gear was selling one recently for $110 BIN .. and it was there for a good few days before anyone bought it. Likewise with the Alien Soldier he had at $195. I would be suprised to see Alien Soldier go for $300 at the moment. And I would be very suprised to see Yu Yu go for $200 at the moment also.

Me, I would like to get my hands on a copy of Pengo. I love that game! But I think I have only ever seen it on ebay once, and it went for nearly $200 .. which is probably a bit higher than I would go. OK.. it's a lot higher than I would go!

yep, japanese only...didn't feel like messing with converting PAL stuff, and the artwork is ALWAYS cooler. 8-) LOL i checked out his site as well last night before posting.

dunno, i've wanted to do the whole 'all import' bit with a console for a while (the MD was just there at the right place at the right time), as my dreamcast library was about half and half, but with newer systems, so much stuff is text heavy anymore...stuff like sonic is pretty tough to mess up. ;)

i'm scouring for contra/AS/rockman...heh... i do have a lock on a copy of rockman mega world, but it's $80. i know in the past it's been a $100+ item, but supposedly like everything else, it fluctuates.

Hmm, Game Choice Club tells me that I've got it backwards:
$119.99 for Yu Yuu Hakusho and $229 for Alien Soldier.

Coulda swore it was the other way around months ago, but OK, they're selling it and I'm not http://www.digitpress.com/forum/images/smiles/js_bigsmile.gif

Son of a gun...they HAVE changed prices; now they want $230 for Vampire Killer (used to be just $168) and only $12X for Contra The Hard Corps (went from $150 to $160). Looks like they had some figuring to do...
