OK, I've heard forum members rave about the wonders of RGB for long enough. Now I am ready to take the plunge to see what all the fuss is about. I am looking for the easiest and possibly cheapest way to go about accomplishing this with the Super Nintendo.
Thanks for any advice.

i believe french super nintendos had rgb support, so you'd just have to get one, mod it to play us games and use a gamecube rgb cable :)

I thought the first generation U.S. SNES systems could output RGB?

First of all, do you have a RGB monitor?
You need to have a RGB monitor that can display a analog RGB signal in the 15Khz range.
Like for example a Commodore 1084 monitor.
If you have a RGB monitor that can handle analog RGB signals in that frequency, then it is easy as pie to get your SNES running in RGB.
You can use any U.S. SNES system, except for the mini-SNES.
Then you simply need Matthew Ross to make a cable for you. I would say for about $20 he could make a cable for you, but you will have to contact him to get his current rate for a SNES cable to your specific monitor.
Contact him at
the_matthew@yahoo.ca
Then get the cable and connect it to you SNES and your Monitor and expect to be totally blown away.
The first game you should play is Super Ghouls and Ghosts. Or Contra III: The Alien Wars. Or any SNES game, really.

In Europe it's a piece of cake: get a SNES/N64/GC RGB cable and there you go.
As long as you've got an RGB-capable TV or monitor, it shouldn't be much harder in the US - my US SNES works a treat with the same SNES/N64/GC cable.

I am in the process of getting an RGB monitor. Does anyone know if a Commodore 1702 monitor will do the trick?
as for the cable, would this work?

Only if your TV/monitor has a SCART connection. Most European TVs do, but I don't think it's common in the US. You're probably better off trying the guy that Anthony suggested.
