View Full Version : Best Platform Game
OK, I admit it. I love platform games. I know moste people here frown on them and consider them to be casual gamer type games but I don't care. I still love them. So anyone have any thoughts about their favorite platform games for each system? I'm hoping to get some useful feedback so I know what to keep my eye out for in the future....
Thanks,
Ron

I love them as well. Platformers and shoot-em-ups are practically the only thing I play these days. As for my favorites, hm?
SNES - Aside from the obvious stuff like the Mario games and Super Metroid, there's a couple of very good Japanese-only titles here. Magical Pop'n, Pop 'n' Twinbee ~ Rainbow Bell Adventure, and Do-Re-Mi Fantasy (a follow-up to Milon's Secret Castle) are all quite good.
Genesis - Wonderboy in Monster World and Monster World IV (the latter is Japan-only as well). Also the well known stuff, the Sonics, Gunstar Heroes, Dynamite Headdy, Popful Mail (Sega-CD), etc.
SMS - Alex Kidd in Miracle World, the 2nd and 3rd Wonderboy games (Monster Land and the Dragon's Trap). The latter is one of my favorite games ever.
NES - Way too many to mention. If you have access to a Famicom or don't mind emulation you should give Yume Penguin Monogatari a try. A short, fun, feel-good sort of game. I think there's a review of it on this site.
Playstation/Saturn - Symphony of the Night, Rayman, Silhouette Mirage (a real love it or hate it type of game). The Saturn also has Keio Yugekitai, a very fun and simple platformer-based sequel to Keio's Flying Squadron.
That's probably enough for now.

Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night.
Rondo Of Blood at a close second.

Symphony Of The Night is a must and the alex kidd and wonder boy games like Professor Hector said are good. All the klonoa games rule.
Has anyone ever played tryrush deppy for saturn? I always thought that looked like a cool game. 8-) That and zenki for pc-fx.

Hey Ron. Platformer games are the least bit casual type gamers games. I mean it takes time to beat most of them, lots of time.
Anyways, every Mario platformer is my favorite.

Other than the usual classics: Mario, Sonic, etc... Here are 2 I really recommend:
Momotarou Kastugeki (PC Engine Hucard) - Very fun, but a bit easy. No Japanese necessary to make it through the game.
Prehistorik Man (SNES) - It's made by Titus (Superman 64, oh no!), but I absolutely love it. it was recently re-released for the GBA, but that version has less-than-spectacular music and is missing an area.

I never cared much for Tyrush Deppy. Getting Super Tempo is more worth your time. Zenki's not worth it unless you can get it dirt cheap.

Anybody who thinks platform games are for casual gamers is a damn fool. They have always and will always be my favorite genre, and many of the most difficult games I have played have been platformers (which I can't say for more "h4rdc0re" genres like RPGs).
As for a little run-down:
NES - Mario series, Castlevania series, Mega Man series, Ninja Gaiden series, Metroid, Batman, the list could go on and on.
Game Boy - Metroid 2, Mario/Wario Land series, and the Castlevania trio (some people hate 'em, but I like them all).
Game Boy Advance - Castlevania: Circle of the Moon (I don't like the other two much myself).
Neo Geo Pocket Color - Sonic
Genesis - Sonic series, Rocket Knight Adventures (my fave on Genesis), Dynamite Headdy, and Castlevania: Bloodlines.
SNES - Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Castlevania 4, Dracula X, Donkey Kong Country 1-3, Kendo Rage, Kirby Super Star, Mega Man X 1-3, Super Ghouls & Ghosts, Mario All-Stars (the platformer fan's staple), and Super Metroid.
N64 - Mario 64, Goemon's Great Adventure (my fave on N64), Kirby 64, and Mischief Makers (if you can tolerate the play control).
PlayStation - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Castlevania Chronicles, Mega Man X4, Mega Man 8, Silhouette Mirage, and Tail Concerto.
GameCube - Mario Sunshine and all the Sonic games.
I left out a ton that I like, but I think that's enough. ;)
Symphony of the Night is my top choice.
Then Super Mario 64
Voodoo Vince at a distant third.

I dont usually have enough patience to finish a platformer, and im kinda fickle about them so here are some of my favs:
Rocket Knight Adventures- PAL MD version is better though ;)
Crash Bandicoot- first in the series is the best IMO
Sonic 3 and Knuckles
I wouldnt mind trying Symphony of the night (psx), Dynamite Headdy (MD), Mischief makers (n64) and vectorman (MD) some day.

I don't think platformers are generally considered 'casual gamer' games, it's just that they have a tainted image from the vast number of shoddy quick cash-ins cartoon/movie tie-ins of the 16-bit era. A quality platformer will always be a beautiful thing though, and for me the evolution of the genre really reached it's pinnacle with Yoshi's Island (SNES). Simply sublime from start to finish.

Better than what?
AFAIK, the PAL MD version is identical to the Genesis game other than the fact that it's slowed down and squashed-up when played on a PAL console (which hardly constitutes being 'better').

Sorry, i should have been more specific. For me better = easier. MD version easy is the same as Gen children, and MD hard is the same as Gen easy (lives and continues are the only diff i think).
I sure as hell wouldnt have the patience to play through ANY platformer with 1 life and no continues to start with. @_@
And the PAL borders/speed thing- never been bothered by it at all :)

Ah, but have you played a MD/SNES in 60Hz? The difference is staggering. I simply can't bear to play anything in 50Hz now that I've seen the true way ;)

Symphony of the Night was way to easy for me. I don't remember dying once. Richter was a little harder but not much. Also is Symphony of the Night even a platformer? What 2d game wouldn't have some platform gaming built into it? Besides shooters and the obvious ones.

Super Mario Sunshine.
Oh yeah, I said it. Best. Platformer. Ever. Too bad it's a little on the short side, but hey, who cares. The gameplay owns all other platformers.

Some of the big ones for me are -
Banjo-Kazooie/Banjo-Tooie (Nintendo 64)
Just damn amazing, blew Super Mario 64 out of the water and had that comedy appeal to it as well. It was one of the biggest games I had ever played (until I got Tooie @_@) and is one of my fondest memories on the N64, after Majora's Mask of course. As for Tooie, it wasn't as original but the size and large amount of new moves added so much to the game. Also with the ability to play Mumbo made it all the more exciting.
Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64)
What can I say? Easily, easily, the best Mario game ever. It revamped Mario forever, even after hours upon hours playing the SNES games, Super Mario 64 took everything to a new level. The collecting, the moves, the exploration, the enemies, it was also so great. To this day I can pick it up and enjo getting all 120 stars, unlike Super Mario Sunshine which was rehash.
Conker's Bad Fur Day (Nintendo 64)
The only game to this day to actually make me laugh out loud. It was great. Most people passed it off as a mature themed crap, but it took the elements of Banjo-Kazooie erased all te collecting crap and made a killer story with a hilarious theme. The boss battles were unforgetable along with the multiplayer. Too think I would have never even have tried this game if I hadn't of seen it on discount at my GameCrazy.
Donkey Kong Country 1, 2, 3 (Super Nintendo)
It involved the most precise timing and skills and had the best graphics of its time. The characters were new and had character and put the Super Mario games to shame. DKC always had a great appeal to it that never got old, everything it did was amazing and the levels were just so long and difficult, to this day I still haven't beaten one 100%.
Other noteable games would be -
Aladdin (Super Nintendo)
Aladdin (Genesis)
Sonic the Hedgehog Series minus Sonic Heroes, blah. (Genesis through GameCube)
Mickey Mouses Magical Quest (Super Nintendo, GBA)
Rayman (Jaguar)
Rayman 3 (GameCube)
Hook (Super Nintendo)
OK, I tried to pick my favorite platfomer for each system for as many systems as I could.

the original SMB, SMB3, super mario world, and mario 64. all of them master works of genius.
for non-mario stuff:
sonic 1 (never cared for the later ones, but 2 was OK)
sonic adventure (once again, the sequels left me cold)
rocket knight adventures (the original beats the pants off sonic)
ape escape
megaman 1-3 (4-6 threw the balance off BIG TIME, and the X games just aren't as memorable, IMO)

What is a platformer, exactly? I always thought it referred to a game whose major skill element revolved around the difficulty of navigating the platforms and such. Like, I would call Contra and Metal Slug 2D shooters as opposed to platformers. They do have platforming elements, of course, but what game DOESN'T? Like 50% of the games ever made are platformers? Weird... SOTN is very poor as a platforming game. It's the exploring and items and upgrading and positioning with regard to the monsters that make the game. The platforms are almost never a problem to navigate. If you're going to call a game like SOTN a platformer, why isn't Halo a platformer? Or Quake? etc etc.... Well I know why, by my own labels. It's cause the main gameplay revolves around positioning and shooting things. Similar to SOTN.... Mario games tend to be platformers because of their memorably difficult jumps and such...

There are so many great platformers, especially on the NES. Other than Marios, Metroids, Castlevanias, here are the other favorites:
NES:
===
Batman -- The music, the game, the memories, one of the best platformers ever.
TMNT 1 -- everyone loves the second one the best, many the third, but my favorite is the first, bar none -- the music, the game, ah, the memories
Ported to hell, but with good reason:
=======================
Prince of Persia -- The second one never really caught me, but the original Prince of Persia, from playing it on the old 286 to the NES, to the GB, it was an incredible game. The incredible graphics only enhanced it, it was all about gameplay.
And finally, the BEST of the BEST -- Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure. The graphics are the BEST of the BEST of the BEST era of 2D platformers. So beautiful, colourful, vibrant, smooth and overall incredible! But this game, also not just about looks.. the gameplay was fantastic! So much variety, puzzles mixed with action, mixed with strategy... it was awesome! Sure, Donkey Kong Country looks good, but when everyone started doing video captured sprites and 3D rendered 2D SNES games, most sucked. The video capture stuff such as Time Cop (SNES) is just awful, sloppy, and down right ugly. Most 3D rendered 2D stuff is sloppy and jagged too. The WORST of the WORST were the 3D rendered, 2D, 2bit colour, greyscale, Game Boy games-- Batman Forever, Killer Instinct, etc... Couldn't make anything out on screen.
-- nothing beats clean, hand drawn, colourful sprites such as those in Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure (even though games _are_ about more than graphics)!

Shinobi (I just love the old arcade version as well as the Genesis versions.)
Dark Waters for Genesis is a sleeper. lots of fun give it a try

Castlevania: Aria Of Sorrow....this is like, a hidden gem for the GBA....everyone get it... :smash:

Ghosts N' Goblins...I rest my case...
Dr. Morbis

SMW and SM All-Stars are indeed great platformers, but the one I feel should be mentioned in this topic is DOREMI FANTASY on Super Famicom. It stars Milon (Milon's Secret Castle) and is by Hudson(soft)
Absolutely BRILL platformer with all the classic themes you could ever want (ice, fire, woods, etc) and it's all done in a very polished package. It's about as charming as video games can get.
Highly recommended. It sadly is quite scarce and expensive. But trust me, you'll want to have a hard copy of this fine gem.
1 of the best I've ever played. I give it an enthusiastic 9.5/10
goemon

Nobody's mentioned any Goemon games yet? My favorite is Ganbare Goemon: Space Pirate Akogingu. Perfect control, killer sprite-based graphics, 3D robot fights, and great level design. It's my favorite Goemon game and one of my favorite platformers.
Another good platformer on the Japanese PS is Kitchen Panic (also available for Win 98). You play a potato who has to go through a kitchen taken over by canned goods to reclaim the stolen stew. The bulk of the game involves puzzles and jumping with very little enemy interaction.
In no order:
Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)
Sonic 2 (Genesis)
Shinobi 3 (Genesis)
Legendary Axe (TG16)
Donkey Kong Country (SNES)
Aladdin (Genesis)
Sonic Adventure (Sonic's portion, DC)
and so many more

There will always be the shout outs for the Mario and Sonic games, but recently my time with the Sega Master System and the Sega Saturn have provided me with a lot of platforming delight.
Without a doubt the best Platformer never mentioned yet is ASTAL. Most 32-bit games age poorly because of blocky polygons, but man, this game looks like a collection of paintings. Every sprite is so vivid, and the levels are filled with shining and shimmering backgrounds and foregrounds of fantasy. It's a beautiful game with the typically melodramatic, cutesy story we know and love from Sega. The game play is highly unique too, with the coupling of a bird (that can alternately be controlled by the second player) to help with attacks, secrets and replenishing health. It's a short game, and you can't save, but man, what a beautiful, memorable experience.
Another game not mentioned is ALEX KIDD: THE LOST STARS for the SMS. Most people frowned because it did away with the difficulty and awesome monetary system in the original, but if you consider the game on its own, and of its time, it's quite the achievement. There's early instances of sound sampling done pretty well ("FIND THE MIRACLE BALL!") and the graphics are incredibly colorful (in that Sega way) and lush, with gigantic sprites and little to no slow down. Technically, it's one of the most graphically impressive games in the 8-bit era. It's an incredibly easy game to play, and pretty short too, but it creates a totally involving psychadelic atmosphere and has an amazingly addicting soundtrack. And it has a naked bad guy with a mohawk that shits out blue skulls at you. I Kidd you not.
WONDER BOY IN MONSTER LAND and WONDER BOY III: THE DRAGON'S TRAP are both amazing games - that they came out in the 8-bit era is insane, because they trump any platformer from that era in terms of graphics, gameplay and depth. Customizing your characters with new shields and faster shoes is just so much fun. Mario who?
On the Saturn I also dug the CLOCKWORK KNIGHTS quite a bit. Although more or less 2D, the three dimensional level renders really make for a unique gaming experience. There are a lot of different paths one can take, and the gameplay experience is different each time you saddle up with your wind-up knight and his stuffed horse. The creativity is in full force in this game, with a wonderful Toy Story-like realization of childhood playthings. The bosses, surely the highlight, are extremely diverse and masterful in design. Not the longest game, not the greatest, but one that definitely opened the door to conceiving of the platformer on more than just a two dimensional plain.
The last unsung hero of the platform world to me is MR. BONES. You won't find a more original experience than this. Every single level offers completely different gameplay dynamics, from flying through glass paintings to running on thin ice to telling jokes and my favorite, playing the guitar to a crowd of angry skeletons. Every level is totally original, and Mr. Bones as a character is too. The idea of losing body parts the more you get hit (and sometimes for strategy) is a great gimmick. The best though, is the soul that resonates throughout the game, thanks to the great blues music and the fleshed out FMVs that follow almost every level. Two discs of exploration and story amount to one of the most complete and satisfying platformers to come out on any system.
That should about do it for now! :D

I believe that even if a game character have a gun (or shot using various weapons) the title still is a platform game.
SEGA Master System: Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Chaos, Tom and Jerry, Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse, Fire & Ice, Sonic Blast, James Pond 2: Codename Robocod.
Fire & Ice, this game does have graphics that are even better than the ones on later games like Sonic Blast!

Screen shots of Fire & Ice running on a SEGA Genesis CDX with a adapter (http://www.geocities.com/ps_x1/Master/games/Fire/Fire3.htm)
SEGA Mega Drive: Ristar, Sonic series, Cadash, Tom and Jerry.
Ristar. The graphics of this SEGA Mega Drive cartridge are well draw. The bosses are even better and funnier than most bosses on Sonic games!
When I first saw this game (Ristar) I believed that this could be a Amiga game, but Ristar was a exclusive game for the SEGA Mega Drive. The same about the graphics into a lot of titles from SEGA for the SEGA Master System ...
Personal Computer: Jazz Jack Rabbit, Prince of Persia, Rayman, Croc the legend of Gobbos.
Matsushita (Panasonic) 3DO: GEX
I agreed with some mentions:
SEGA Mega Drive: Shinobi III [I also like the game Shadow Dancer], Toy Story, Castlevania Bloodlines (Vampire Killer)
Also like Midnight Resistance
Neo-Geo CD: Metal Slug 2
Atari 2600 VCS: Pitfall

Another game not mentioned is ALEX KIDD: THE LOST STARS for the SMS. Most people frowned because it did away with the difficulty and awesome monetary system in the original, but if you consider the game on its own, and of its time, it's quite the achievement.
The game is a mere port... a warm up for the fiendish arcade version. This one is less of a platformer in the traditional sense of moving forward and killing enemies... it's more of a dodging game, where the focus is on dodging things with pixel perfect precision. It's even worse than Juju Densetsu. Not a beginner's game by any means.

Castlevania series, Mega Man series, Magical Pop'n, Contra series, NES/SNES Mario series, New Super Mario Bros, Legacy of the Wizard, Little Big Planet, etc.
If I listed every platformer game I loved, including 3d and 2d, then it'd be a very long list.

The 16 bit era was a golden age for platformers and my favorites, beyond the usual suspects, would have to be Ristar and Rocket Knight Adventures for the Genesis.

Super Mario World is the best ever.
I used to play that game so much, I can beat the game through to the full 96.. I always kinda wanted a PAL version of the game to get that 97th level... never got a chance to plat it *sad face*
