View Full Version : How do you play Mr. Do! ?

I enjoyed the C64 version of this game years ago. Basically I would just run over (eat?) the cherries to end the level, occassionally shooting (you know, throwing the ball at) those EXTRA monsters to get a free guy.
I was playing the MAME version the other day and discovered that you can also end the level by shooting all the bad guys. Gee, only took me 20 years to figure that one out. :monkey:
So my question is, which is the better way to succeed at the game? And interpret "succeed" as you wish, meaning either getting the highest score or progressing furthest in the game.

That's what's cool about it is you can do one or the other. I play to shoot all the monsters basically but with a primary second goal of shooting at least one letter I haven't already. Along the way I'll eat cherries. If I get pretty stuck and it gets hard to shoot the last guy (since a lot of the board is eaten), then I'll finish the stage by eating the cherries. This happens far less however. :)
Mr. Do > Dig Dug by the way (and the recent thread here about that proves it!) :D

Iusually play it either way. I start out chomping cherries and killing baddies with the ball or apples. I guess depends on how frantic they get coming after me.

Arcade version:Answer BOTH!
1)on first screen reduce your lives to 1 and leave 1 baddie on screen.
2)Then run up screen creating a long tunnel which stops under an apple
3)when the baddie gets really near turn and shoot him..
3)you will kill the baddie but also because you turned downwards the apple will fall sending your last life to the bottom of the screen (squish!) x_x
4)if youve done it right you then restart with 255 LIVES 8-) @_@

Only works in some versions of the game. Luckily as a kid with the various bootlegs we had.. it worked on most all of them :D

Ah yes, the "all the extra guys" trick. This, along with a quirk on the same machine that gave you what I imagine was 255 credits when you got the diamond, made Mr.Do! the most popular game in our town back in the day.
Many of us kids would usually take turns playing the game after the trick was done, alternating every so many lives. Once in a while we'd try to take the score up to the highest possible without flipping it over (999,950 maybe?) and then try and drain all the extra guys so we could record that score on the high score list. With the afore-mentioned diamond glitch, if someone got the diamond while playing, we'd try and drain the extra lives out then as well, so we could indulge in playing "normal" games of Mr. Do for free.
Wow, the memories... :-)

A couple more ways to end a level:
- Pick up a diamond (free game)
- Complete the EXTRA bonus
So my question is, which is the better way to succeed at the game? And interpret "succeed" as you wish, meaning either getting the highest score or progressing furthest in the game.
Highest score: trap as many badguys under one apple as possible, but miss one of 'em on purpose. That way you can scarf up all the cherries (but one) and continue to get the bonus monsters (extra). You'll also be able to grab the bonus targets, and drop all the apples searching for the diamond.
