Busted PS2 and 2600 paddles

I recently bought a broken PS2 for $3. It looks like somebody dragged it behind their car, or filed the corners down. Anyway, when I plug it in (using my own cords that I know work), the red light comes on, and when I press the button to turn it on, the blue and green lights come on as expected. The problem is that no audio or video comes out of the machine. I would at least expect the start up menu to work.
Also, when I eject the CD drive, it makes a horrible sound. The drive is probably messed up but I would be satisfied to just get signals from the machine.

I tried opening it up, and it looks like a few of the wires in the ribbon cable going to the CD drive are broken. Other ribbon cables dont look in the best shape, but look intact.

I was just wondering where a replacement ribbon cable could be acquired, or any other ideas as to what the problem could be.


Unrelated, but I was also wondering if anyone knew how to get rid of the "slop" in Atari 2600 paddle controllers. When I rotate the knob and stop, the pong paddle (or whatever else) keeps going for a split second. I dont think this is natural.

replacement ribbon cables can be purchased from www.liksang.com (ship worldwide) som the sound of the error its probably a sloppy chip mod gone bad try cleaning around the bios chip this might be the issue with no video / sound.

If that PS2 has wires and not a ribbon cable leading to it's power switch, it likely is NOT worth fixing.

I would likely have all of the parts you could possibly need, but you may very well need a lot of parts.

hard to explain all depends on your modell
check it and go to any site who sell chips and have online install documents the bios is the chip points M-P and Q-W are connected best of luck

Every set of atari 2600 paddles I've owned have "jitters." While playing kaboom or breakout the paddles stutter and shake, which sounds like what you have as well. I read in one of the forums to use contact cleaner in the resister and it actually works great. Open up the paddles and squirt a bit of contact cleaner into the variable resister, then move the paddle a bit to work the fluid in. Like I said, I've fixed 3 sets so far and my kaboom scores have improved dramatically. Hope this helps you.

I decided to drag out this PS2 again and see what I could do to it. After further examination, I realized that the fan was not running when I turned the system on. I also discovered that S-video and optical audio are as equally dead as the other forms of output.
The system is Model No. SCPH-30001, Serial starts with U1.

I have not had a chance to try any of the previous suggestions, but perhaps this additional info can narrow down the problem.

the terrible sound from the CD-rom is probably the laser axis that has jumped of quick solution is to lift the hatch to the laser housing and move the laser to top possition and se if it moves back on power on if no.. then you have a problem with the contact of the axis. quite common on PS2

and about the no pic no audio try resoldering the connector.

Not on that version. It comes on immeditaely on power on with that version.

It's a learner, that one. It's got problems too numerous, just to find out it's laser is likely irretrievable.

The solder connections are all good. I have not tried fixing the laser yet. I am only trying to get some sort of signal. I am unable to locate the bios chip, even though I searched for it.

the bioschip is a chip on the topside of the PCB
with the text SCEI on it somewhere.. its located on the utter side of the pcb on all models except V3

Most of the chips say SCEI on them. I dont even know which version I have. Either way, I do not see anything obviously wrong with the chips or solder joints.
