I smell a lock/move on this thread.
As for emulation I rarely use it except for the Neo CD-Dreamcast emu

I don't see why it would be locked, and where would they move it? There's no Emulation forum anymore, so it seems like this forum would be the most appropriate place for it.

no more ROM sites for me. Everything comes from the newsgroups. There is a little learning curve to start but once you get the hang of it it's great. When there is a MAME flood you could get every ROM in a matter of hours. for only about five minutes worth of sorting through the posts and then letting Newsbin Pro leech away.

Ah... I didn't realize we had lost the Emu forum. Fair enough then!
...we've also lost the ability to use BBCode apparently.

As long as we're (hopefully) posting links to sites with "dead" system ROMs instead of Neo/GBA/XBOX/etc. stuff then it'll stay open.
And for Chrissakes, if anybody asks for a link to those above-mentioned ROMs/disc images I'll hang your balls from my rearview mirror like a pair of testicular fuzzy dice. (Or ovaries, whichever's more appropriate.)

Well, I can guarantee that I won't be posting any ROMs for the newer systems. So no problem with that.
And yes, EmuAsylum is great. I finally got a working ROM for Xexyz. Thanks Sotenga.

HAH! I wish! LOL
By my site, I meant my favorite/best site. I don't own a rom site. I own lots o' roms, however, so anything Playagain flubs up on, I'll see what I can do to help. :)

Yes, and definitely worth the trojans that the popups try to install on your computer. :p
Don't get me wrong, I have no problems with Edgeemu, especially since they host my website, but they should really do something about those kind of pop ups.

So, what exactly is going on with roms and emulation these days? Is it okay to get roms now? Obviously not the newer systems that are still being sold, but for NES, SNES, etc? And what about MAME? Is that okay to download games for?
Jive3D

No, it's not okay. You are still taking someone's intellectual property without paying for it. Even if it's not available for sale or for a back-up, it is still technically illegal. However, DLing NES roms or Genesis roms is chump change as far as most digital law enforcement or intellectual property owners are concerned. They still want it gone, but they only go after the big guys, that's why Share Reactor was shut down, but the emulation forum here was tolerated or overlooked b/c many people here REALLY respect the game industry or are members of it and this is the cause of the policy that it was okay to talk about that emu here as long as it is in regards to games that are NOT available for sale. Seems that the site no longer wants to officially aid in stuff like that now. The ocean of file sharing have it be music, movies, games, even if only to 'try them out' is becoming ever turbulent. And as talking about this stuff is one of my obsessions, we need to not go overboard...oh I ramble and ramble.

2 Questions:
1. What do you recommend a ROM newbie download to get started.
2. Are those "arcade style" usb joysticks that take up the whole desk any good? Recommendations?

As far as the "arcade style" USB joysticks, I don't know. I use a PS2 style USB controller.
When you ask what we recommend a ROM newbie to download, do you mean what Emulators would we recommend? If so, then try Jnes for NES ROM's. It's a really simple, but great emulator. Personally, my favorite NES emulator. For Genesis, I recommend Gens. And for SNES, I use snes9x. ZSNES is another good SNES emulator.
You can download any of those at the sites mentioned already.
