Mine had to be the Sega CD add-on for the Genesis. I was in the Navy at the time in Nuclear Power School in Orlando. I went to the mall to see a movie ("The Bodyguard") and what did I see when I dropped in Kay Bee? A row of Sega CD units stacked along the top shelf behind the registers. I knew it was coming out but I didn't know it had already been released. I went straight to the ATM and got my $300 and traded to the kind clerk behind the counter for a very precious Sega CD. It was a great night. Got to see "The Bodyguard" on opening night and bought a Sega CD on launch day (i think?). Along with the Sega CD I puirchased Sewer Shark, Night Trap , Cobra Command, and Black Hole Assault. Stayed up very late that night back at the barracks falling in love with the Secga CD. Looking back on it now I should have skipped the movie and just played Sega CD all night.

I know I'm one of the very few who enjoy the Sega CD but it brings back memories of my days (and nights) in Naval Nuclear Power School. I have since sold my original Sega CD but it was replaced with a CDX. One of my two favorite systems along with the Intellivision, again I think I'm in the minority on that one also.

So what was your favorite/most anticipated system that you bought with your own money?

I have been happy with everyone of my systems in one way or another. If i had to choose one that sticks out the most it owuld have to be my super nintendo. I have had my snes since lanch and for 15 years it's still been going strong.

I know I'm one of the very few who enjoy the Sega CD...One of my...favorite systems...again I think I'm in the minority on that one also.

Another Sega Mega CD fan right here! ;)

Anyway, on topic:

Most memorable would have to be the purchase of my first console, the SNES, on September 9th 1995. You never forget your first. After years of PC gaming, which in the last few years became a drought thanks to an outdated 286PC, getting the SNES was like a whole new world. I purchased it myself to! $209.00 AU with an extra bonus controller and Super Mario All-Stars. Pretty good value considering the SNES console by itself retailed for $149.95 AU.

Other memorables would have to be N64 (simply because of the hype and then finally getting one on August 30th 1997). GCN because I got it on it's Australian launch day - Friday, May 17th 2002. Spent ALL weekend playing it, and then talking about it on the Monday with my friend who'd got his a few hours after me.

Atari Lynx was also pretty memorable, seeing as it was my first handheld and I was totally blown away by the amazing graphics that the little portable could produce.

I've had fun with them all.

But if I had to choose a favorite it would be between my SNES & PS1. It's a toss up between the two.

Mmmmmmm, for me it would either have to be either the Commodore 64 or Dreamcast. The Commodore for the longevity of enjoyment and the Dreamcast because of what it was able to do before other systems. I give a slight edge to the Commodore 64 though, still play that sucker. Going on twenty years, wish the newer systems would last half as long. :D

Same here. These 2 gave me the most excitement :D

Easy choice, my Dreamcast. It was the first current generation console I prurcased, about two years ago. Being that the system was dead at the time it didn't cost me much. I got shenmue and grandia 2 with my burchase and played the hell out of em for the next two months. I still play my dc almost daily. I can't say that about any other system.

For me it was the Commodore 64 computer I purchased exactly 19 years ago (June 24, 1985) today.

First, it was the first time I had a "state-of-the-art" machine. Before that I was always stuck with systems like the Odyssey 2, which while fun were far behind the competition. I was able to get the C64 and that summer enjoyed new games like Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Adventure Construction Set. It felt so good to be playing the latest and greatest games as they came out.

Second, it was the first system I purchased with my own money, from my own work. That was also a very satisfying feeling.

From 1985 to about 1992 I created a vast library of games for that machine and still play them. No question about it, if I were only allowed to keep one of my systems, that would be the one.

The Genesis

Got it back in '89 at Montgomery Wards for $199.99. Think I was 13 at the time. Was blown away by it too because this was the first time I ever saw arcade quality graphics on a home system (sorry, but the 2600 and NES didn't do anything for me). My friends were amazed too and would come over all the time and we'd play the hell out of Altered Beast. The thing that sucked though is that I didn't have money to buy new games and stores didn't start renting out Genesis titles until a year later, so me and my friends were stuck playing Altered Beast and that stupid Soccer game for a while. We still had tons of fun though and it was my most memorable console purchase ever.

Kinda a tie between the N64 and the Genesis, though Genesis would probably win by technicality (the N64 was a co purchase with friends of mine).

It would have to be the summer of 1990 when I got the Genesis. It was my first year working at a local resort as a grounds keeper the end of July I put in a butt-load of hours. With my last paycheck before the beginning of the school year I announced to my parents that I was spending it on a Genesis and one game (as my parents weren't too keen on me blowing my money on gaming stuff and wanted me to save). I showed them the magazines that covered the system extensively and that I had genuine interest and that I worked hard at this job and I deserve the machine. They agreed.

So, with paycheck cashed, my Dad took me to Prange Way in Plymouth so I could buy that powerful 16 bit system. Along with the system purchase I snagged Golden Axe. When I hooked that machine up to my 20" TV and plopped on some stereo headphones, I was blown...away. Thus my buy, sell, buy, sell, buy, sell relationship with the Genesis began.

Even though I don't have a Genesis anymore, that moment in 1990 was probably the best time. My first "major" purchase (followed by a PC Compatibile 8088 10 MHz computer two years later for $500).

For me it was between the Dreamcast and Gamecube. I remember when i got the dreamcast. I got it and Sonic Adventure. I played SA nonstop untill i beat the game with all of the characters, then, too my supprise, i unlocked Super Sonic. Way Cool. As for the Gamecube, i got it on launch day as well as Star Wars Rogue Leader, which is still one of the best looking games i have ever played.

I bought my GameCube in late November 2001. I was very happy that day. It was the first console (Aside from a DOA NES I bought off eBay two years before.) I bought with my own money. But it was worth every penny of my hard earned paycheck. With it I purchased Super Smash Bros. That game got a lot of use back in the day. (Bought Pikmin later that week as well.) Today I am still buying games for it and happy with my choices. I plan on picking up two really good ones tomorrow. Beyond Good and Evil and Viewtiful Joe. Maybe also Space Raiders. Three really good Cube games that make my decision to sell my PS2 Pre-order ticket to a cow orker the year before even more of a good idea. Nay, a great idea.

Early this year I bought a GBA SP. That was my second best choice. Since I bought it, I have a couple dozen games to play on it. I love it so much.

Together, the two make my favorite purchases so far.

We'll see when the next round of consoles comes around if they're up to the same task.

Excellent stories so far folks. That's what I was hoping to see. Not just which was your favorite or most memorable but why? What memories do you have from it? What was special about the day and how has it faired since you bought it.

Keep the stories coming please. A few thousand gamers here, everyone has to has some kind of story to tell about their favorite system.

If it was one I got while I was younger it would have to be the sega genesis. This is one system that I really regret giving away. I had about 70 games for it since I got it for christmas till the day we sold it all off. There was just something about sega's commercials back in the day that made me want to jump ship from my NES over to a genesis. Aladdin, lightning force, sonic, mutant fighter, castlevania, jurassic park....there were tons of games that I enjoyed the hell out of when it came out and it is probably my favorite all time console.

If it was one that I've gotten since I started collecting then I would count the Sega Saturn. I've REALLY enjoyed the 2d power love this console can put out. I've enjoyed modding this more than my xbox, and when it comes to import games there are hordes more of incredible shooters, fighters, and beat em ups to enjoy the hell out of.

For me, it's always been about Sega ;).

I go through phases where I truly appreciate and can't get enough of a particular console...

Neo Geo Pocket Color: I got this thing after it had pretty much already died in America (I had wanted one during it's lifespan but I never got around to it). Wow, what a great machine, mostly because of Cardfighter's Clash and the fighters for it.

Dreamcast: I was a staunch DC fan well into the ps2's beginnings. So many great games and the first truly online console gaming.

Currently it's my Xbox/GCN/GBA, as I find lots of great things to play on each.

My favorite console purchase would likely have to be when I saved up and bought my original NES with Star Wars. Not much of Star Wars guy, but it was a great game. I remember I got my own TV in my room at the time, an old black and white one... but it was mine! I would stay up late (nine at night :)) and play my very own NES.

I also was happy when I bought my Sega CD. I got it brand new with seven games for $79.99 CDN nearing it's end, but before the N64. It was a great day. I knew Willow Video Games had them cheap, but the one by my house had sold the last one, so I called around, and found one at the Richmond location. On the way back, I went to the one by my house, and picked up my eigth SCD game: Monkey Island. Those were the days!

The Monkey Island for SCD was a great port. As well, Spider-man and Batman Returns were great. Yes, both ports of Genny games, but still fantastic! How cool were those Spidey cartoon cutscenes? I connected my VCR between the Sega and TV to record them when I beat the bosses!

People who didn't grow up with the Sega CD don't understand how cool it was when it came out! Man I loved it!

Definitely my Dreamcast. The day I got it, I bought crazy taxi and played it like hell. About a month later I bought my current favorite game of all time, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and haven't stopped playing it since.

Sega Genesis

STORY : The Turbo Grafx 16, SNES, and Genesis were all out that summer and I was determined to get one of them. I had no money and my parents did not think highly of video games (despite showing them how helpful Math Blaster was). So I worked doing little kid stuff like mowing lawns and subbing paper routes. At this point in time the Turbo Grafx was $99, Genesis was $150, and SNES $179. When I got to $100 I thought about getting the Turbo Grafx but I mostly rented back then and nobody rented Turbo games. I have to admit my ultimate goal was the SNES. But when I got to $150 I caved in and bought the Genesis. I couldn't have been more happy then or now. The Genesis has been my system ever since. I've gotten a SNES since then but nothing will surpass my Genesis in the ranks of my all time favorite systems.

Agreed. When that came out I thought it was the most kick ass add-on I had ever seen for any game system. I've never had a chance to play the secret of monkey island port on that system, and would kill to do so now, I shall have to ebay a copy soon or something because I would love to play that game again and not have to go through the trouble of emulation, ect.

Playstation.

I was about 12 when I bought my Playstation. Before then, I was a big Nintendo fan. I always thought anything other than a Nintendo console was not worth my time until I started seeing Playstation ads in my Game Pro magazines. I saw ads on Final Fantasy VII, Tekken 2, Mega Man X4, and many other great games and I thought, wow, maybe the Playstation wouldn't be a bad idea. At the same time, I just started on my new paper route job, cuz back then, I didn't want to wait 'till Christmas or my birthday to get new games for my then, new Nintendo 64. When I started my new little job, all I had in mind was getting new Nintendo 64 games, but then changed my mind for the Playstation by the time I got my first paycheck(a month after I started the job). So, by the time I got payed, I asked my mom to take me to Target and get me a Playstation for 149.99 with one greatest hits game(even though, what I really wanted was Final Fantasy VII, but that was 49.99), which was Tekken. I liked the game, but it wasn't as fun as I wished my first game would be. But I knew it was gonna be alright, cuz I was gonna get Final Fantasy VII a month later. By the time I got it, I played the hell out of it for hours and hours, and after that, I fell in love with my Playstation.

Gawd..... favorite system purchase???

Im going PS2, because that was the first system that I bought for myself. Every other one up to that point had been a present for either a Birthday or Christmas. Not that its more enjoyable than all my others, but when i plunked down that 299 for it, I was just so proud that I not only found it (when they were still hard to get), but that I bought it for myself.

Gee.. when I bought my PlayStation in 1999, thus breaking free of Nintendo fanboy-ism, all I could think while playing the games was, "Man.. I wanna go back." LOL
