I took one of these out of a busted Tivo.

When I hook it up to my computer the Bios sees it as a 9 gb hard drive instead of a 30 gb ??????

And it is not a bios problem because I have a 125 gb hard drive in the same computer which is being seen as a 125 gb drive. So I know it's not the bios limitation problem.

Any ideas anyone ?

I've re-partitioned it and re-formated it and still only 9 gb......

AAAAAHHHHHHH :o

Download the DDO and try to install the HD with it.

Quantum was bought by Maxtor, so it could be Maxblast 3 but i'm not sure.

Well the Maxblast sort of worked.

I can Format and partition the drive for 30 gb, and it goes into Windows XP and Windows sees it fine.

Then when I restart and go into Windows it's a 9 mb unformatted drive again.

Oh well I guess I'll just chunk it in the garbage. :o

Are you trying to use the HD as master, slave, or cable select?

If you have a 120GB drive and it detects fine, then the problem is hardware related, and not bios since your computer is new enought to support such HD sizes. MAX blast (or whatever it's called) is only for old BIOS that don't support big drives.

I've had situations where the drive didn't detect well in the PC.. most times it's due to a defect on the HD.

To "force" this drive to work (and hence disable the on board chip), install the HD into a computer with another hard drive. Set the jumper on this bad one to SLAVE, and the other HD to MASTER.

This should do it. SLAVE drives in IDE chains always piggy back on the MASTER drive's HD initialization code for startup, recognition, etc. You're basically selecting who has the boot & detect firmware during bootup. :D

good luck!

If I were in your shoes, I'd scour the Internet for a firmware update. It could be easy to find given that it's a Quantum Fireball. Just run the model number through their website's search engine. You might find something that works.

This is a possible fix because they may have used a custom firmware for Tivo systems as some sort of copy protection scheme. I really couldn't tell you for sure.
