View Full Version : Nintendo and Xbox as one...I don't think so but who knows

I was just at the super market and read this in an Xbox mag:

"It's been bandied about before, but momentum is growing behind the suggestion that Nintendo is desiging the architecture that will power the next Xbox. Aparently PowerPC-powered G5 Macintoshes (of all things) are in circulation to game developers working on next-generation games. The PowerPC core in the G5 - a version of which is the processing chip at teh heart of the GameCube - leadds to speculation that microsoft has turned some hardwre design decisions to the Japanese giant that has been taking a bath on its nono-handheld hardware in recent years. Why would this make sense? It would help Ninentdo graciously bail out of the monstrously expensive console hardware market, while still having a device it's intimately attachet to, plus it gives Microsoft improved cachet in the tought-to-crack Japanese market, as well as a platform for iller titles form Nintendo's still world-beating game design studios. Win, win, win, it seems."

Now I hope this is a load of crap to make an Xbox mag seem interesting. We already lost Sega and I would hate to see Nintendo go. All said though with the video game market I could see this happening as much as I would hate it. Why can't Nintendo and Sega team up?

It'll never happen. Nintendo's pride wouldn't let them help anyone else out, even if it meant the difference between going under and staying in business.

Nah, I can't see it either. If Ninty and Sega couldn't or wouldn't get together why would Nintendo think about getting together with Microsoft? As far as I can see as long as Nintendo sell big in Japan they don't really give a toss about the rest of the world!! In that sense it's only really a win for MS cos they'd gain koudos in Japan whereas, I'd think, Nintendo would lose some for joining with them Westerners!! I also think both companies work under very different philosophies - Nintendo are about class and elegance and MS are about bloatware and products!!!

I just read another theory on this that said Nintendo and Xbox might be both using the same processor. Which still seems weird that Microsoft would use a Mac processor.

I dunno. Though MS is probably a name most associated with PC, they aren't PC manufacturers and are a big time developer of Apple software. If Intel was putting out a G5 based game console, that'd be weird, but considering MS isn't a PC only software company, it isn't that big a shock.

It's really kind of smart. Seems like there's a lot of Apple users in the game development world anyway. Why not make life as easy as possible for them?

I spy FUD...

Nintendo wouldn't help somebody to help themselves? Hmm, okay...I know their reps are fond of saying they'll go under before they stop making hardware, and when you consider that their handheld systems are the most popular in the world that seems safe to say! I wouldn't go so far as to rule out them working with another company. What's more it isn't quite as breathtaking as it might sound. All this entails is Nintendo getting some technology from Nintendo (same as Sony and Philips, see) and Microsoft will be able to sell its games in Japan. That last bit is dissimilar from the old Nintendo/Sony or Philips partnership...or is it? Sony would've been a much more active partner than Philips was in bringing games to a hybrid system. Whatever the case, we have seen Nintendo working with another company that had been in the business of producing/developing games and hardware (Sony's experience being with SCE and their MSX machines) to produce a game console, so this isn't anything new.

Nintendo and Sega apparently sorta did try to "team up" in the last few years; I'm afraid I have to agree with the Sammy belief that Sega should stick to the arcades for a while. It would've been nice had it worked, but it really didn't end up that way.

And Microsoft using the "Mac processor" is another, well, non-issue, as the PowerPC is an IBM product. Big Blue has been pushing their own processor as much as they can; they're working against the fact their own line of PCs has - at least this far out - only utilized x86 processors. For folks to be looking in a serious way at PowerPC architecture today for budget or even deliberately sold-at-a-loss machines means to me that processor must provide a special combination of performance and price that the x86 clone world doesn't.

now most people dont know this but the playstation was suppose to be the next nintendo. sony betrayed nintendo. i remember when nes first came out and it was great!!! i mean lets go to the begining--my first was atari 2600--2 wasnt the 5200 it was the colecovision (better graphics and play) 3 wasnt the 7800 it was the nes 4 yes it was the snes(now sega never gave me the game feeling so i stuck with nintendo} 5--now this was playstation (the game driver hooked me i wasnt buying the n64 console}this sysytem rocked--6 console was the toughest decision i made--game cube (great console)--ps2 another great console--or the xbox) now i heard rumurs about the xbox so i held off buying the ps2. ibought the xbox after seeing all systems on hd.now i have to say the xbox on hd has the best graphics and feel for most games.
with all this in mind--sony has to go.there where they are now because of nintendo and i wished i new this before i bought the ps1 even so i still would of bought the console.sad but true. i hope xbox and nintendo rock the console game world and leave sony in the classic gaming world.--but again bill gates is a sneak to.but i dont think he would hurt nintendo or would he?its all about the green back or the power.

It all depends how you look at it. But most accounts I have read on the Nintendo/Sony deal to make a SNES CD drive, including Stephen Kent in 'History of Video Games', say Sony was more to blame because of how they carefully worded the contract to make extra money and control most of the rights. Maybe today Nintendo would allow that, but NOT 10 years ago. :)

I seem to remember That Phillips (CDI) were in there as well, while Ninty and sony were coming up with the new CD add-on for the Snes, But if it had all gone ahead Sony would have had controlling rights over many Ninty titles..

That is why Ninty got out... See! Sony always after other ppl's money O_O But Ninty slapped them doooooooown!!

So really the Playstation 1 and 2 and all the others that will arrive in the near future are all BASTARD Children of the great Super Nintendo!!.. :o So the Snes truly is the Daddddyyyy!

I had heard that Nintendo got pissy because they didnt get exclusive control over the games...which knowing how they were during that period of time doesnt sound that unbelieveable.

Partly my point. I don't know all of the details -- very little has actually been said in public -- but Nintendo back then wanted more control of things then Sony was willing to give. Now, 10 years later, they probaly would agree with it.
