View Full Version : Gamecube the only console in history not "hacked"?

Note: This is NOT a hacker post/thread. Basically an observation:

Don't quote me on this, but I believe this may be the only system. Of course I have heard about some round about way to get some games running through the broadband adapter with glitches, but no real way to recreate the media and play the games as they were meant to be played. As we all know the DC had no protection (or very light I should say), PS2 and Xbox were hacked via mod chips, just about every other system's games have been copied and there is a way to play them all...either on the original system or on a PC. But not the cube. To tell you the truth, I really like that fact. I think Nintendo made a darn right decision with the media they decided to use with the GC. It's good to know that the *only* way someone is going to be able to play great games such as Metroid Prime is to actually have a GC and buy the game.

I'm pretty sure this won't be the case forever, weren't Gamecube games already 'dumped' but left useless for lack of an emulator? Just as the Dreamcast uses a special proprietary format in the GD-ROM which are unreadable to PC drives, the discs can still be made into mountable images that are now used in a recently released emu.

Of course there is validity behind the point that presently, yes it's the case. It is a nice feeling, and the same reason I bothered to get a 32X and Saturn before they (were/will be) emulated properly. Can't sate the curiousity without taking the hardware plunge.

I would say out of the two systems you named, the Saturn will be the latter (very) that will be emulated correctly due to the complexity of the CPU's. Excellent system BTW :)

The gamecube has been hacked. It's just a huge deal to go threw for maybe 30 good games.. I hear the chip is like 60 wires and the games have to be ripped.

Why bother when the console is almost all budget/used now.

And as for media? As far as I know 1.5GB Mini-DVDs aren't exactly for sale to the public.

Sure are at my Best Buy =D. Download ISO, burn and gamecube has officially been hacked. I never wanted to bother. All gamecube games I've ever bought were well worth it.

No emulator has really run the games though, they are all horrible quality and crash quickly. I'd agree and say, even though it has been hacked it really has some top notch protection.

I tried playing a few games with the broadband hack and it was pretty crappy. They work, but music/sound is all jumpy and cut scenes and FMV are terrible.

Still, astonishingly, the Gamecube is currently the best-emulated NG console :)

I know it may sound silly..... But the PS2 and the Xbox can easily be modded to run riped games, But the GC can't be hacked (well properly at least) In most peoples minds your gunna buy a system that you can get really cheap but good games for. (ie ripped games)

I have finally figured it out!! LOL Thats why people haven't been buying the GC.. Cheap Ass' video gamers get a GC and get you some Quality games... ;)

I feel that since the XBOX and PS2 are so much more powerful and popular that GC has just flown under the radar. Why bother hacking a system that's third in the market and woefully underpowered compared to XBOX?

It's because the Gamecube is just that awesome.

I heard rumors that games can be ripped and loaded remotely using the Network Adapter

Again just a rumor, never seen it done, and its too much trouble to bother.

I have tried the gamecube hack using the broadband adapter. Its still in the early stages of getting hacked. Nintendo did an excellent job with the copy protection.

but no real way to recreate the media and play the games as they were meant to be played.

You buy Gamecube blanks from Europe/Japan (3 inch DVDs) and copy them. You need to modify your DVD-burner, which is quite expensive, but it can be done.

Yeah, you can certainly buy mini-DVD-Rs all over the place. However, what exactly must be done to the DVD drive, Musical?

I wonder if it is possible to replace the DVD drive in a gamecube with an off-the-shelf DVD drive of some sort...

AFAIK, the game.com and Zodiac haven't been hacked.

-Hack- Panasonic Qube -Cough-Those thiongs are still expensive! They Cube is $100 now, but the Q is still $500.

So until it hits at MOST $300, I won't get one. $200 is better. But doubtful. I wonder if it'd play my copy of "Galaxy Quest" that only plays in one of the 7 DVD players in my house. (The Apex plays it. The Xbox, PS2, DVD combo in the living room, the Dell and generic PC downstairs and my iMac G4 don't play this godforsaken DVD.)

uhm NO
cause the panasonic Q uses TWO lasers
one for DVD play and one(the same as the original cube has) for cubegames
so nada

Ninty did really a great protection job

and @ posts above:
all those "buy blank mini-dvds,modify your dvd-burner and burn GC-isos" failed horrible. There is no way(so far) for public to burn GC games on mini-dvds

I believe that the Gamecube drive spins in the opposite direction too...

Nope, spins normal direction... but yes, they did a great job at copy protection.

Yeah, you can certainly buy mini-DVD-Rs all over the place. However, what exactly must be done to the DVD drive, Musical
- Replace the laser to match the Cube's laser (different frequency)
- Reprogram Burner to write to layer 2.

Like I said, possible but expensive. It's not worth the effort for single users like us. It's cheaper to just buy the game.

And no the Cube doesn't spin backwards. I'm not sure how this rumor started, but simply popping open the top reveals the disc spins the same direction as any other DVD or CD player.
