I've been thinking about getting the PSX Lunar 1 & 2 box sets for a while now. It's pretty confusing shopping on Ebay for them though because it seems like most of the sets are missing something. If I buy one, I'd like to get one that is 100% complete but I'm not sure what a 100% complete Lunar set includes. Is there a definitive list somewhere that itemizes the complete contents of these sets?
Also, I hear that the early printings of the Lunar sets came with cloth maps that weren't included with the re-prints. Is this true and if so, are there any other variations to look out for?

Had the same problem when I bought the two Lunars and Arc around six months ago.
LUNAR SSSC:
- Jewel case with 2 game CDs, 1 music CD, 1 'Making of CD' (altogether 4CDs)
- Hardbound manual (which contains part of the strategy guide)
- Cloth Map
- nice and impeccable box which holds everything together :)
LUNAR 2:
- Jewel Case with 3 game CDs, 1 music CD, 1 "making of" CD (altogether 5CDs)
- Hardbound instruction manual
- the lilttle black box with Lucia's Pendant and character mini-standees
- nice and impeccable big box which holds everything together :)
There was a Lunar SSSC Fan Art edition published in 2002, around two years after the original release; but I have no idea in which way it's different from the original box set.

I don't have the sets in front of me right at the moment (at my sisters house) so i can't tell you right off hand. Though i'm pretty sure lendelin hit the nail on the head. If you want i could check and see what the extras were when i get back home.

I looked at my boxsets, and checked the content.
Norkusa, you can also go to the WD website (www.workingdesigns.com), go to 'museum' and "Playstation." There you'll find for the two games pics of the boxsets with all the content.

Thanks allot for that list. Weren't some little stand-up cardboard figures included with these sets too, or was that for the Arc The Lad Collection?
Does anyone know for sure if all copies of SSSC (besides the Fan Art edition) include the cloth map? I was told that later pressings of the set didn't have it.

Those would be the cardboard standees.

Here's a site that a few of us at DP are working on Norkusa: http://www.game-rave.com/variant/index.html
Has some lunar stuff there. :)

The Lunar SSS, Lunar SSC: FanArt Edition, and Lunar EBC descriptions are all complete with one exception - Lunar EBC came with a paper map in the Omake box with the Pendant and Standees.
Arc the Lad came with: (I'm doing this by memory, so forgive me if i leave something out)
- Arc The Lad 1 (1 disc)
- Arc The Lad 2 (1 disc)
- Arc The Lad 3 (2 discs)
- Arc The Lad Monster Arena (1 Disc)
- The Making of Arc the Lad (1 disc)
- Hardbound instruction manual
- Omake Box with:
- Memory Card Holder
- 4 Dual Shock Analog Controller Covers
- Tons of Standees
For the Working Designs PSX games, Official Strategy Guides, which rule, exist for Lunar: SSS, Lunar: EBC, Vanguard Bandits, Alundra, and Arc the Lad 1&2 (one book). Unfortunately, the Arc the Lad 3 strategy guide was canned. Disappointing, since WD does great strategy guides.
[EDIT] Confused Vanguard Bandits title with Vagrant Story. Sorry all!]

Tell me about it. It took WD over SIX MONTHS to get the Arc 1+2 guide out the door. Even though Zach was no longer writing for them anymore, there's no excuse for that. I was'nt shocked when I finally got my Arc 1+2 guide that 3 was canceled.
Of course, WD then promised they would condense their Arc 3 info and post it on their website as a guide. They never did THAT either.
It makes sence to delay the release of a book until after the game comes out (to make sure you have the most up to date info -- see MOO 3 book as a example) but it needs to be out within a month of the game's release, or you're not going to sell well.
(One exception seems to be the Lunar 2 guide. I recall that was delayed past a month also, and Zach told me only 50,000 were printed. I had one pre-ordered. A week later I went to try to get another one and they were totally and utterly GONE. O_O I'm not parting with mine for anything -- save, perhaps, to see of Zach would sign my copy. :D )

I'm just glad that I got both Lunar sets when they came out. I couldn't imagine trying to find all of the pieces used...I saw a used Arc at Gamestop and of course pieces were missing. I'm sure there are copies on ebay that are complete...I'm sure they go for a pretty penny though. Good luck finding it nork.

And No one came to me WHY..... being the WD whore and all....
ALL the discs have variants Except RayStorm. Most also have insert variants as well. IF one would like to know what MOST look like (mind you, i dont have em all yet) but im almost there you can go here.... http://www.game-rave.com/variant/index.html Ive got the other Lunar SSSC's except the Fan Edition, and one more Alundra cover to post, but those are when Dangerboy feels like updating the next time.
Lunar SSSC: Fan Edition came with just as a double jewel case, an instruction manual, and different disc art, that says its from the Fan Edition, as does the cover of the game.

I guess I just like the sweet hardcover guides... and the softcovers before them.
Man, i still hate that they cancelled the Arc3 guide... its not like i need it to finish the game, but i just like the guides and the posters you can send for with them...

You mean Vanguard Bandits, not Vagrant Story. The VB guide was the first-ever hardcover strategy guide in the U.S., which is pretty cool.

It's financial suicide to delay the release of a guide until after the game ships. You MUST ship the guide BEFORE the game, so that stores can sell the game and guide at once. Retailers will slash their orders to nothing if the guide doesn't ship before the game. That's what happened to the long-delayed L2 guide. You can't wait a month, a week, or a day after a game ships, or hundreds of thousands of dollars (in the case of triple-A guides) will be lost.
If I told you 50,000, that was a typo. Closer to 5,000. A single print run that almost instantly sold out. My best guide ever, without question.

Eep! My mistake... I really did mean Vanguard Bandits.... Nothing against Vagrant Story, which is a decent game on its own. Sorry all! Edited earlier post to correct said error. :embarrassed:

Whaaa? There's a Star Ocean 2 variant? o_O This is news to me. I got two copies back in NY; I better check what they are when I get the chance... I'll have to get me another one if they're both the same. Any idea why there are two versions? Did SCEA just get cheap after awhile?

Aussie...I think you may have misread. There's no SO2 variant that I know about, and no one in this thread has mentioned it as far as I can tell.

Closer to 5,000?????
O_O
Holy CRAP! Am I glad I had mine pre-ordered from my local EB! Well, I can't recall exactly how I got the book -- it was either that or I had it ordered from WD themselves. Worth every penny. I have'nt even checked to see what copies sell for on EBay.
I STILL wish WD had at least posted the Arc 3 guide on their website like they said they were going to do......
Oh, and I ment that of course you want the guide in the stores the same day as the game if you can help it, but some have'nt come out till a few days or a week or so later, and that's allright. WD seems to delay their books as much as their games, though......

Sorry about the confusion. o_O I was replying to PapaStu who linked to the page about PSX variants, where Star Ocean 2 is listed.

Yep. Retailers kept chopping their orders in half as the guide's release date kept getting pushed back. And it didn't help that the guide was VERY expensive to print and ship.
I have'nt even checked to see what copies sell for on EBay.
I think $35-$40 is the average. Nothing too outrageous.
I STILL wish WD had at least posted the Arc 3 guide on their website like they said they were going to do......
I assume the A3 guide was never posted because it was never completed, but we'd have to ask the author of the A1/2 guide, Henry LaPierre, to be sure.

The L1 and L2 guides were late because I had to focus on finishing the game translations before the guides. The L2 guide was also very late because it was stupidly ambitious (and the inspiration for the artwork-filled special-edition guides from BradyGAMES).
I was able to finish the Vanguard Bandits guide before the game shipped, but only because VB had a much smaller script than L1 or L2.

I actually have some questions about the Fan Edition release of Lunar SSS. I've been trying to find a copy of this game, but haven't had any luck. More often than not, people don't even know what I'm talking about. :o
Was it released in a box like the others, or just a regular 2CD PSX case? In either case, does it look any different than the regular release? The only information I could find on WD's site was the disc art. Does anyone know what everything else looks like?
Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the Fan Art Edition?

its just a regular dual case release, a la all the FFs. I've only seen it once at an EB back when it was released

Blackjax is right. Lunar 2 has in the Omake Box (lil' balck box) not only the pendant and standees, but also a paper map. Sorry that I forgot to list it, norkusa.
Lunar SSSC didn't have standees.
I completely agree with what was said about the WD guides...they are GREAT guides. I wish they'd publish a similar guide for the upcoming Growlanser compilation.

At first I was worried too to get the boxsets with all the pieces in very good condition, but it's not hard on ebay to get them. Usually I wouldn't spend $40 for a used game, but the boxsets are something very special.
I got all three boxsets complete in PERFECT condition (and I mean perfect like new) off ebay for $40 to $45 each. Not bad, considering the condition and original release price.
The three boxsets are much easier to get for a reasobable price than Valkyrie Profile or Suikoden II.
The best thing and great surprise was the purchase of Silhouette Mirage (developed by Treasure, published by WD). I completely overlooked this game, got it for $4 from ebay (incl. shipping), and this parody of shooters is a true 2D masterpiece!
