Here's something that came to my mind earlier. What's going to happen in a few years when the hard drives on our Xboxes die? Will we be able to replace them? Or will our Xboxes become 10lb paper weights?

Perhaps eBay will become cluttered with an array of replacement hard drives, similar to what has happened with the NES replacement parts.

Yeah, but it's pretty easy to replace a 72 pin connector. I'm guessing it'd be fairly more difficult to replace an Xbox hard drive.

I don't know how hard it is but people replace them all the time in favor of larger ones.

From what I've seen they look like normal hard drives to me, and computer hard drives are very easy to replace.

The wire and connector used on the XBOX hard drive is the same as that used inside the computer you are using to view this. I believe the disc drive is the same way.

After looking in more than a few XBOX systems i have to wonder why the dam thing doesnt overheat with all the stuff stacked and crammed inside there. I know the thing is a huge beast, but i honestly think there isnt enough space inside for whats inside there. @_@

Will it really matter in a few years anyhow. Hell the XBOX will be under 100 dollars soon anyhow. And like everybody has said , the Hard drive is pretty easy to replace anyhow ;)

And who will care :P The next super console will be out anyway @_@

The hard drive from a PC can be used if you hack the Xbox. Either a mod-chip or a software hack.

A PC DVD-drive like the Samsung 616 can be used in the Xbox but it has to be heavily modified because the Power Plug is different and the eject wires are different also. AND .. you have to reverse the motor because it turns backwards on an Xbox Dvd-drive.

Info can be found here : http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/samsung-616t.php

True, however people are still playing and modding consoles of the past. I doubt this will stop with the Xbox. HDD replacement is easy and better than buying a new xbox Id say.

Most likely this will be the case. The early (mid-90s) arcade board's harddrives (i.e. Killer Instinct) have started failing in large enough numbers for replacement drives to come out, and the necessary chips and data to get a new HD working (most have matched encrypted HDs). I doubt X-Box will be much different when the time comes.

Good point, why bother with a $50 HD kit when you can just buy one that was packed away after christmas for $45? Kinda like paying $10 for a 72-pin connector on a Nintendo, when a virtually new Nintendo at a garage sale costs $5. Which was the case a couple of years ago, but now it's a different story, and the new connector is probably worth it.
