I'm playing a game of R-Type Delta and working my way thru the first level when my son (he's 12) says "You always have to fight a worm!" as the mechanized worm beast makes an appearance on the first level.
You know what, he's right! This has to be to most used type of enemy in video games. Mostly in shmups but later that day I was playing Gunners Heaven and sure enough a worm baddy shows up. @_@
Even the very modern Crimson Skies has a mechhanized worm beast that you have to battle but to be fair we can give the worms a little credit for there champion, Earthworm Jim. So I geaus they're not all bad. LOL
Feel free to tell us about your favorite worm enemies (or hero) in video games and is there a game which features an Uber Worm?

One of the bosses in Metroid Prime 2 is a big-ass worm... the trend continues.

Zelda: ALttP and Zelda: Four Swords... and Zelda: WW all have worm bosses that I know of. And, of course, who can forget the classic Wiggler from Super Mario World and Mario Sunshine?

Super Turrican on the SNES comes to mind. (Well, it was some version of Turrican, anyway.)

Wiggler has legs, so he's a centipede.
The shape is really simple to render, so I guess that's why you see so many worms/snakes/eels/centipedes/etc. in games.

DUNE (series) !!
You cant really fight them per se, but theyre there. Always eyeing off your harvesters..
Isnt there one on the new (ps2) contra too ?
I dont mind having lots of worm enemies, coz theres only 1 rule to remember about them: aim for the head. or tail. or whatever :o
Dont forget the first boss in Silent Hill 3.
And they're flying all over the place in Cybermoprh for the Jaguar.

There's that worm in the bottom of the tequila bottle that always gives me a hard time when I'm gaming.... he seems to be in every game.
As for Dune, you CAN fight the sandworms :D I've done it. If you trash em, they explode for a TON of spice too. But you can't do it till later on in the game when you have significant sacrificial forces to send after em.

That would be Turrican 3/Mega Turrican (the Amiga and Genesis versions respectively). Just a lil' FYI. ;)
The snake/worm type enemy is a MUST in a shmup. www.shmups.com pretty much said so theirselves. There's one in Forgotten Worlds, one in every single R-Type, the Salamander from the game of the same name qualifies, and why the hell can I think of any others? Let's just say there's a snake in every shmup. Not necessarily every game, but pretty damn close.

Theres a worm in the Panzer Dragoon Series. But its not all that uber but it is hugh though.
