Post your favorite port of the original Doom and why. Also if you want tell us your least favorite and why. And I only included consoles, no handhelds.

My favorite is probably still the Jaguar version. That was the first one I ever played, the PSX version is cool because of the Doom II add on but the orginal seems to be censored in some parts of the game, like some of the bodies were taken out of the port.

My least fav used to be the 3DO port due to the brown boarder but since I've gotton a bigger TV it's not so bad.

I always have and will prefer the good old PC version. All the others seemed to irritate me in one way or another.

The only one on that list I have is the SNES version. I would hardly call it my favorite though.

On the list or not, I pick the PS1 port because it's the best version I have of the original game.

PSX verison was my favorite

The Saturn port was just basically the PSX verison

The GBA Verison is the Jaugaur Port (24 levels total )

Didn't pick any of em....I pretty much liked just the pc version. The psx version is pretty good but the repetetive ambient music annoys me. The PC version is and was the best. I have the jaguar version but it seems devoid of music. It has a listing for it in the manual even, but then on that page of the manual is instructions for something else, so it's kind of a silent game, heh. Same with Wolfenstein 3D. Just sound effects....unless I'm missing something?

The Gp32 port. :D Since it is just the pc version. ;)

Wasn't the Saturn port far worse though? Never played the PSX version but I have the Saturn version. It moves slow, graphics look bad for some stuff, and sfx sound muffled. Not a fan of the new music in it either.

The version I like most is the original PC version.

If we're talking strictly about ports and not the PC original, my vote would go to the GBA version playing on a Game Boy Player. :)

I have the 32X version (but no hardware to play it on :( )

SNES version
3D0 version
Saturn version

I don't like the SNES version, the play area on the screen is too small. I've only played the 3D0 version briefly, seemed to sway a lot when you walked.

Never seen it on the Jaguar.

Prolly the Saturn version from the list. Altough I have to agree that I like the PS1 version best - currently I am playing Final Doom on the PS1.

The PC version is the best.

PC version for me. Though the N64 was quite good too, though was way too dark (even with the brightness turned all the way to max).

The PC version is the only one I care to play if only for the deathmatches over 14.4 kbps dial-up with a buddy that has a functional 486DX2/66 (anything less seems too slow). With a worthy opponent, I'll be tying up my phone line for hours. :)

Looks like you left out an important choice on your poll. I too prefer the PC version, wouldn't really play any other one. I would say the WORST for me, would have to be the SNES version, don't get me wrong, it was Doom alright, but it just had alot of little things that annoyed me. Like for instance, if I remember right monsters would always be facing you no matter what, which can be annoying when you're fighting against alot of guys. One of my favorite things about the PC version used to be making the monsters fight each other, which you can't do if they're always facing you.

Oh yeah, I also just remembered something. I think you could only go to the third episode on "Ultra-Violence" skill level, one step below nightmare.... why did Williams do this?? As a kid, before I had a PC this SNES version was my only way to play doom after having played it and been wowed by it on a friends computer, and I mean I'm sort of a natural on these FPS-type games, but sorry, I can't kill 20 cacodemons and a baron of hell who are all unwaveringly facing me with four buttons and my little directional pad.

It's great that they managed to port this to SNES, though. But god damn if these little annoyances didn't drive me crazy. Also being that I have a PC now, and that there are several Doom ports people are making that take advantage of 3d accelerated graphics and good stuff like that, there's literally no reason for me to play this SNES version, nadda. I do dig the red cartridge though.

Unless it's the pretty unique N64 title, then I'm only playing the PC original. Best game ever - at least in my book. Seriously. When the game was relatively fresh, I owned (still do) all of the DZone expansions and every other freeware add-on I could find/download. I even created a few of my own mods, which was very very exciting at the time. With MIDI, I developed my own soundtrack for the game - sweet.

I pick the PSX version. I love the Tower of Bable level ( I think that is what it is callled) . After you walk to a certain point tons of monster appear. I love cutting through all of them with the chain saw!! :texaschain:

The PS1 version is the best port IMO. The music does get annoying at times tho. Too bad they couldnt put the Arch Rival monster in the Doom 2 part of the game. Something about too many frames of animation.

I like the PSX version, but the Jaguar version was also damn good too!

In fact I think the Jaguar version was dramatically underrated. It didn't have background music, so it caught tons of slack for that, but other than no background music, it's still amazing, at least for the Jag, anyways.

Thanks for reminding me about how good the PSX Doom is! Shame doesn't save your game to the mem card though.

Yeah, the PC version is by far the best of them all, I mean with all different wads you can add the game can change a hundred different times, in the poll though I was going for the best console port. I mean of coarse the PC version is going to be the best it's a PC. The only ports I own is for the SNES, 3DO, & PS1. But I am a huge fan of the series and getting all the Doom games is also what I am collecting. It's pretty cool though to hear about everybodies different choices. Thanks for the input.

Of the choices given I go with the Jag, but the PC version is superior.

Hi,

I like 32X Doom a lot (because it was the first time I played this classic game). But of course Doom is always better on PC.

True they had a password system instead

May I add a few more?

DOOM 64, you gotta see it to believe it...they used the PSX sound effects

Also, Final DOOM for PSX was really good, but it was really some levels from "Doom 2 Master Levels" from PC, then Plutonia Experiment, and TNT Evilution

The real PC verison of DOOM 2 Master Level contains 3000 levels (Was more of an add-on and not a whole other game)

While Final DOOM on PC was two games on one disc Plutonia Experiment and TNT Evilution (32 levels each, for a total of 64 levels)

but everyone knows the PC verison will have to be the best because of how much you could do with it

Plus. I remember the 3D0 verison is nothing more then a port from the Jaguar verison as well

My favourite version was on the 32X. It was the first time I had ever played Doom and I loved it. I am embarrassed to say I have never played it on the PC :embarrassed: I hated the 3DO version but I seem to remember a code to eliminate the border. Does anyone remember this?

Why didn't you even put the PSX one on the Poll? :o

Aside from the PC ones, there are DOOM's for:

Jaguar - Good, not great
SNES - Sucks
32X - Also good, not great
PSX - Best Console version
Saturn - Supposed to match the PSX one, but bad framerate
N64 - Doesn't really count, but still hella awesome
GBA - Best and only Handheld version
3DO - Well.. haven't tried it

I have all of them except the 3DO. Also, I don't have DOOM 2 for GBA. But I do have Final DOOM for PSX which is a disappointment in the level selection. Missing so many good ones.

The PSX DOOM is the best as it is almost all of DOOM 1 merged into most of DOOM 2. I played it all the way through. What an awesome experience.

The GBA DOOM is a very nice port. Very surprising for an early GBA game. I love it.

I am a DOOM Fanatic (http://jasoco.no-ip.com/doom.php). And I couldn't even vote in a "Favorite Doom" thread poll! :(

[Wishes he had the boxes for the SNES and N64 versions.]

---- Edit:

The real PC verison of DOOM 2 Master Level contains 3000 levels (Was more of an add-on and not a whole other game)
Sorry, 'tis not true. 'Tis a blatant silly lie..

From "The Page of Doom (http://doomworld.com/pageofdoom/master.html)":
Master Levels for Doom2 was released on the 25th of December 1995. It contains 20 new levels (actually theres 21, if you can find the secret elevator in "Teeth.wad") created by independent designers and supervised by id Software. As well as 'Maximum Doom', 1,830 other independently designed levels, though it says 3,000 on the box. This requires a full copy of Doom 2 to play.

In Maximum Doom there are 201 wads for DOOM and 1,629 for DOOM II. 10 of the Doom wads credited are really for Heretic and 3 are unplayable due to bugs. The Idbest.wad ran on the Shareware version. There are bugs in 2 of the Doom 2 levels. Note: id Anthology 'Doom' cd includes 'Master Levels for Doom 2' but does not contain 'Maximum Doom' though the 'Mac' cd does.

Wow.. how'd they screw that one up?

i just like to play the 32x version more. The 6 button controller is great.

The saturn version is the worst, what a waste of processing power...it runs at 5 frames per second in some parts....really terrible port

With all the power of todays consoles, I'm surprised they haven't created a PC Perfect port of the games.

What would TOTALLY rock is if the Xbox version of DOOM 3 included an unlockable perfect port of Ultimate DOOM and DOOM 2. Hell, throw in TNT and Plutonia while you're at it. That would kick so much ass! I mean, Return to Castle Wolfenstein did it. Why not DOOM 3?

i bet someone will port the doom 1 and 2 maps to the doom 3 engine, that supposing ID releases some map-making tools
