I always thought that Coca Cola Game Gear looked pretty neat.

I've spotted a few BLUE game gears on my game store journeys but the others are Japan only releases.

I wonder what that GG "Magic Knight Rayearth" is like.

Both GG Rayearth games (Rayearth and Rayearth 2: the making of) are neat little turn based RPG games. I have both (although no game gear) and they're quite nice

I only have a black Game Gear. So whats the history behind the Blue Game Gear? Was it some sort of promotion or what?

The blue one was packaged as a "Sports Edition" Game Gear....it came with some baseball game.

AdamG, are either of those Rayearth GG games available in english?

There was also a game gear that was made of precious metals and encrusted with Diamonds. I'M NOT KIDDING. I wish I had a scan from the Gamepro that I had that mentioned it back in the early '90s. I don't know what the run was, but I am positive that a gamegear 'only for the extreme elite' did exist.

Rediculous, but true. Ahhh, Sega. (R.I.P.)

on a side note, SEGA and SNK are both dead, but I just thought of a nice analogy - ya know in Mario Kart 64 Battle mode, you can die, but then become a bomb to go around and still fuck with the rest of the players? Think of Sega and SNK in that light. They are still around... well in a strange way. I love tangents, dont you? Not to be confused with Tengen, oh I digress once again... ^_^

I have a virtua fighter Game gear. The one with Akira on the face. It came with some virtua fighting game. This obviously was a JPN only release. I think ther was a Pai unit also. Any one got info on this thing?

I remember a picture of that game gear on a EGM. But it wasnt originally made by sega, but by a company that makes stuff for rich people. That gold and diamonds game gear was worth 10,000 US

Okay, I just looked at vidgame.net on Game Gear descriptions, and it says taht there is:

gray flat glass screen
gray plastic rounded screen

that the former uses the TV tuner only. also that it is designated by a serial number that starts with a NUMBER.

however, both of mine, flat AND rounded, start with numbers for the serial number...????

From my experience, any game gear that has the three "circles" on the outer edge of the screen the colors red, green, & blue those ones work with a TV tuner. Any GG where they are all white are the later releases (Hi, Majesco) won't work with the TV tuner.

another way to tell is to turn on the unit without a cart, turn the contrast all the way up. if the screen has a green tint, then it is an older unit that can use the TV tuner. if the screen is black, it is newer

Yeah, sadly none of the coloured ones made it to Europe. There are a couple of rareish GG boxed sets, though - the Ltd Edition GG + TV Tuner package can occasionally fetch good money, and there's a Jungle Book pack-in version that I saw recently for the first time:

I dunno about it selling badly though - the GG had a pretty decent run over here, and there were games released up until '96ish. There's around 200 European releases altogether, I think.

Hmm well near me nobody had one... maybe it was the age of me and my friends... what year did they come out as i was born in '86 so i was a little young to get one i guess, or shall i say my parents thought i was a little young for one... Grrr!

I remember my dentist's office used to have a blue game gear. He'd give it to you while you had that freaky duck-bill thing filled with flouride in your mouth. The only games he ever had for it were sonic 2 and lion king though.

I think it launched in time for Christmas '91. I know that amongst my friends from the time there were more Gamegears around than Gameboys. I think Sega's success in Europe with the Master System probably gave them an edge over Nintendo in the early days - obviously the GB proved dominant, and was always sucessful, but it never seemed 'huge' over here in the early 90's. Maybe we're just strange Oop North :)

The blue Game Gear was released in the US as both the Sports edition and the Lion King edition. I have a boxed blue Lion King edition.
