Does anyone else reconize the game I'm talking about, or know what it was called, or where I can find more info on it?

I've only seen it once -- in a arcade at Fisherman's Warf in San Fran, I believe in December of 1994 or January of 1995.

It was one of those very large multi-player arcade games -- the unit was housed in a small room and projected on a huge display screen on the front, with the controls in front of a long bench for the players to sit on. Well, chairs, more like it. I think there was room for 8 players, although it could have been as many as 10. It also had a attendant there, decked out in the game maker's uniform and urging the players on during the game.

I clearly recall the game was made by Namco.

The game was a space shooter -- I'd say about 10 minutes long from start to finish, and expensive -- I think each person had to pay something like $1.50-2 to play. It used high resolution graphics (for the time) and had several voices. I don't think it had any actuall footage in it. Each player controled a cursor on the screen (a different color, of course) and you all worked together as a team to try to make your ship surive a space battle to take out a major boss at the end of the game. There was a hit point guage on the screen as well, and I tried to help the 'team' by moving and shooting my cursor on the edges, blasting down missles or other stray particles that the others may not see. All you had was the laser cannon -- nothing else. At least I don't believe there was any special weapons.

I'm sure the unit was quite expensive, which would explain why I never saw it anywhere else. But I can't find any info on it in the KLOV either, so I'm hoping someone else here played it. :)

Hum.....I found this entry on that game:

http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=G&game_id=7889

It very well COULD be this game, although I'm not convienced totally of it yet. It also does'nt say if it was released in the States or if it was Japan only.

Can anyone else help?

I'm going to agree with the aforementioned lethal bushy-tailed one. Sounds like Galaxian3 or Attack Of The Zolgear; I know the former at least was released here, and I think Zolgear was too.

By the way, those screenshots are from the import PS1 edition (http://www.thelogbook.com/phosphor/edit/gal3/). Which is a TON of fun with a good crowd and good controllers! ;)

Dude, they actually made a HOME VERSION of that?

:eek 2:

Figures it has to be a import! Now I have to mod my PS2 and get the game! LOL

Of course, I'm sure it's not quite the wild ride that I recall it being in the arcades, but I'm glad to see there's a home port of it.

Yes, I'm convienced it was one of those two games that PDF mentioned, although I can't be sure which one that it was.

BTW, we got crushed on the last boss in the game. :(

Actually, it IS quite a wild ride - they did a good job of transferring the look of the laserdisc backgrounds to a CD-based game. It really rocks out for a PS1 game.

Also, if I'm not very much mistaken, that PS1 edition has both Galaxian3 and Zolgear on it, though it renames the latter as another Galaxian3 "mission."

I don't know how they did it either.

Yeah, here is some more Galaxian 3 stuff.

BTW, the arcade here by my house still has one, if you ever make it to OKC.

Been to OKC allready....not sure if I'll ever come back. :D

Well, it looks like Galaxian3 got released on the PlayStation for Japan and Europe -- never for the US, though. :( When I get some money maybe I'll mod my PS2 and get a import copy.

And the Zolgear version has no home versions. It was just a arcade enhancement kit, according to KLOV, and I'm not sure what was different with it.

Now if only Star Wars Triliogy Arcade had come out in a home port.... :o

Yesterday I was in the neighborhood of Crossroads Mall (home of Bally's Le Mans Arcade!) so I decided to swing in and see if they still had Galaxian 3 there.

Yup! They do!

It seats six people, not eight (I could have swore it held eight people). It has entrances on both ends. Inside, there are two projectors, projecting the image back onto the rear wall. The entire game is enclosed (to make it dark, I assume) except for the entrances.

My son Mason and I dropped by their around open. There are probably 80 games there and there were about half a dozen kids in the whole place. I didn't see anyone play Galaxian 3 the whole time.

So I can assume that the reason the game had a Namco attendant when I played it cause it was brand new and very popular, and they wanted to keep things running smoothly.

Thanks for all the help everyone. If I ever mod my PS2 I'll get the import version of the game.
