View Full Version : NES yellow duck hunt test cart ???? what have I got ??

Work with me on this. I just recently bought a closed-down NES test center "outfit" (all the machines, manuals, signs, parts, etc that would be in one) including a set of SNES test carts ( three grey ) and the full set of NES test carts ( NTF2, 2 grey, and five yellow ). But there was a sixth yellow cart in with the mix (and it has clearly been used almost as much as the other test carts ) with a "Duck Hunt" label. The game is Duck Hunt. I notice no difference in it's gameplay. The label is clearly a NES real label. If I saw it laying around somewhere, I would question it a lot. But since it was in a mix of carts that came from a center, I question it a little. I was going to include a picture (still will, if it becomes relevant), but it is basically a duck hunt on a yellow cart. What have I got??? Does anyone have any info on an item like this?? Or am I falling for a test center practical joke? X_x All help would be greatly appreciated. Please don't send buy-requests for any items...I'm a collector too. ;)

It is like the zelda one. Same as one of the other test carts ( i believe the ntf2) except with a special label. the figured they would promote games while making the house calls to repair stuff. kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Pretty hard to find. I just don't understand why they would promote a game that came with the system (?). This is what I believe it is, but im not 100 percent positive.
Now are you sure you dont want to accept offers? LOL

Actually that sounds pretty cool. It's not the yellow Zelda cart, but it's pretty much the same idea, no?
I would be interested in seeing a picture.
I remember someone claimed to own one of these a long time ago, though it turned out to be a photoshopped picture.
However, if you got this cart with the others at a repair center, then there is no reason why it couldn't be a legit cart...

When you say "like the other one", do you mean on the inside? It is the actual game duck hunt when you plug it in, it doesn't display any test features (like the zelda). And if it's a promo idea for duck hunt, did they do this with lots of games? And did the outside label match the inside game? Am I making any sense? :o ?

It was just a simple, cheap way to test the Zapper. Inside you'll find a board 100% identical to the released game.

TRM. I think you're confusing a guy from a long time ago with a yellow test center Duck Hunt cart with someone else who made Photoshop stuff like Andrew B. A yellow Duck Hunt was discussed once and the label in the photo was peeling slightly. Although not unusual to see a peeling label on a test cart or anything official like NWC where the type of glue was not probably worked to precision from formula like that which was available during mass production runs. I don't think that previous instance was < ever > proved to be a graphical manipulation. Hey it's always interesting to us when someone finds something in the center of a complete Nintendo test center kit that was previously thought to be fake, of course. Bravo!
The person meant that a Duck Hunt yellow test cart is like the Zelda test cart ("the other one") and both not incomplete games. The Zelda Test cart used in service centers of which I've done business with and contacted a few owners which have each estimated the number of yellow Zelda test carts that are < ever > likely to end in the hands of fellow collectors to a number of 25. I'd presume then that Yellow Test Duck Hunt is far rarer even than that. If you were going to throw out something which would it be Zelda or Duck Hunt. The Duck Hunt Test itself must be more rare because, either there were less ever made than Yellow Test Zelda... or Yellow Test Duck Hunt just got thrown in trash cans while Test Yellow Zelda was spared because people usually had a half dozen Mario/ Duck Hunt versions at home. NICE CATCH!

I agree that the Duck Hunt would be pretty rare since they were probably sent back to Nintendo as they were supposed to or got trashed since it was such an undesirable game. However I don't think the number of yellow Zelda carts is as low as 25. I personally know of 3 of them found in just this area of the country - 2 by me and 1 by another collector. Based on that small sample I just don't see it being rarer than the NWC cart.

Hi! I sent some pix to www.msnusers.com/testcenterpix for your viewing pleasure. I just took a quick overview. The odd picture was an accident :embarrassed: ...I don't do this web-picture stuff well. There are a couple boxes of resellable "official NES replacement part" (cords, pads, etc) and a couple boxes of repair parts (chips, buttons, circuit boards, shells, 100's of doo-hickies ). Then,a few signs (only one shown ) and a complete set of manuals (repair guides, advertising materials, part number guides, test-center manuals, schematics, everything ) . The test centers (NES and SNES ) are perfect, as are the test accessories. A half dozen resellable SNES and N64 machines were included...all new parts. And of course, the test carts. The number in the corners of the duckhunt carts is not a question mark, but a number "7" (I believe). Maybe cause it's the seventh NES cart?? I have no idea why it's marked. People have asked how much I gave...I gave a pretty good price...cause a collection intact is hard to find: but he gave me a pretty good deal as well.... cause an intact collection is hard to sell for a fair price. I could make a fair profit if I spent the time to tear it down...as could he have done. He chose the easier money (it would have been a lot of work) and I'm not tearing it down :D I look forward to your insights. Thanks

The NWC is rarer of course there were less gold ones actually made I'm sure of and there are probably less gold and gray actually < left > existing. But combined together no one knows what is left existing. So traditional ideas about how many NWC there actually are may be an overestimate in itself. Though it was almost three years ago last speaking with anyone about a Zelda Test cart. The estimate does beg to be updated. Perhaps comparing in numbers of Existing Duck Hunt/ Zelda test carts to gold/ gray NWC won't do it but instead how about a ratio 2:1 perhaps even 2.5-3 full game test carts to every one gold and or gray World Championship. I don't know any facts regarding numbers pressed but those lose relative value when considering what amounts of these were saved. Chances of finding either in the wild seem to be over or equally far fetched. One reported case from each? The test cart found in the wild (Funcoland/ Zelda) and one case in the wild (flea/gold NWC). Anyone who watches ebay or message boards knows that those are the only places you'll find an opportunity to deal. But had you found two together or not and regardless that history shows that test carts sold on Ebay in lots seem to be someone liquidating a Nintendo service center I wish that there are more out there because I wouldn't be bothered by happening across one in the near future.

All that extra stuff sounds interesting too and I'd like to see and get all the details, like signs, spare parts and replacement items. I'd like to see a quick overview of what each of the repair binders is about. Also I couldn't help noticing there are seven NES test carts in all in that photo. Perhaps it was that there was a certain order of operations that they were supposed to be used at that service center and the one with the seven was the last on the list. Or maybe that was just to show that there were seven NES test carts in all at that center and that was a marker to show that. Or it could have been the seventh NES test cart at that center that was given to them and put into use and similarly marked. Maybe there was a six-step six-cart process that was required by that particular shop protocal, then the Duck Hunt test cart was implemented and was given to them and they always got confused by it or forgot to use it so they wrote seven on it to remind them what was up.

I should mention the Test NES system that looks like there is a cutout in the bottom is the rarest piece I see out of it all. That is only the third one I think has ever shown up. Maybe one more that I miss remembering.

Thanks for the interest in this item....but what I would really like to find is some reference to it in print somewhere. The DP guide doesn't list it, and I've not seen anyone else ever refer to the "Duck Hunt Test Cart". Though a few folks in this thread mentioned they knew what it was, I would like to find an "official" reference to it....or persuade DP to add it to the guide. Any guidance?? Thanks

FWIW, my yellow Zelda came from a thrift ($1.99 for all you price hounds) about 3 years ago. So I guess that makes 2 of those found in the wild.

Thanks! It's a gameboy test cart issued by Nintendo. Not real sure how to use it yet LOL ....but it's still cool 8-) . Does anyone know of a legitimate reference to this yellow duck hunt test cart? I'm stumped.
