Hi, I bought a PS2 today the wild today and it is functioning rather strangely. PS1 games all work. Some PS2 games work but others do not and a message saying "disc read error" or something similar to that come on the screen. Also, dvd's do not seem to work. I have concluded after a lot of game testing with about 20 games that I know work that the discs with the blue bottom work excellently while the silver bottomed discs get the disc read error message. Music CD's work fine. I thought i read somewhere that sometimes there is an adjustment that can be made so that everything will be read properly. Any and all advise and or suggestions are welcome because unless I can fix this easily I have a rather expensive PS1 in the shell of a PS2. Thanks in advance for all of your help.

Your PS2 DVD laser is unable to read DVD based discs. You can still read CD based discs.

It could be dirty. The laser could be out of alignment. The camber adjustment could be out of whack. The DVD laser could be irretrievably dead.

The procedures on addressing this vary from version to version, and there are nearly 10 versions, and they all look nearly identical from the outside. If you take the cover off carelessly, you could tear the power switch cable free (if lucky) or tear it in two pieces (if unlucky).

I do not recommend DIY PS2 repair to anyone who is not extremely comfortable with electronics. I used to walk people through PS2 stuff, but it's so easy to severely damage a repairable unit, that I recommend against it.

Sorry!

Good Luck!

I'd get that PS2 cleaned.

What you described was the same thing that 95% of the PS2's suffered from that were cleaned at my former employment.

Some wouldnt read blue, some silver, some wouldnt read PSX games.

If it getting cleaned out solves the problem then i suggest you take measures to make sure IT and dust never meet.

Cover it with a towl & keep it off the floor or dusty places.

there are 2 possibilities you could A. try to repair it yourself or B. ask someone who knows how to repair stuff repair it for you.

eitherway the problem is laser based probably unaligned as meantioned above simple way to test is to mark on the plastic cog where its set and tamper little with it by turning counterclockwise about 15 degres if this does help but ps1 games stop working the laser power can be adjusted on the underside of the laseritself (not recommended to do if youve never done it before) otherwise its probably a burned out laser .

for proper calibration youll need a oscilloscope

Call Sony. They may repair it free of charge. They repaired mine twice and it is 3 years old and not under warranty. I guess they had a lot of problems with the first few batches.

I thought Sony had agreed to fix all Read Errors on non-modded PS2's for free.

Am I incorrect?

Yes you are. It's more of a lottery thing. If you say the word of the day when you call, you win! LOL

My ps2 sucks as well, it plays about 50% of ps2 games I try, and never plays Ps1 games, and plays all DvDs. :o
