I'm a pretty big fan of the Dragon Warrior series, and am itching to play the SFC Dragon Quests (mainly 5 and 6). Has anyone played these? It is unthinkable to play through them not knowing a lick of Japanese?

Also, the remakes of the earlier games look pretty tasty too. The SFC rendition of DQ3, the PSX DQ4, and the PS2 DQ5. Anyone ever play these?

With the help of some awesome walkthroughs, I was able to finish both DQ 5 and 6 in a decent amount of time, for not being able to understand anything.

I've played Dragon 1-7 and have beaten all of them except for part 7.

The Snes Dragon Quest 1, 2, and 3 were also ported to the Game Boy Color. There pretty good but the graphics aren't as good as the Snes ones. I didn't care that much for part 5. Dragon Quest 6 is probably my favorite of them.

Dragon Quest 5 qand 6 were both translated. Part 6 isn't complete done but the few untanslated lines don't make much of a difference.

I was about half way through Chapter 5 in the Dragon Quest 4 for the PSX before I lost my save data. It was redone using the Dragon Quest 7 engine. Your also able to manual controls the other characters in Chapter 5 which you couldn't in the original NES version. You could select a battle plan or whatever you want to call it.

There are pretty good guides for all of them. Most of them have translation guides to boot. There also are Script dumps of the US versions for parts 1-4. not sure if there are any for parts 5 or 6. You could play the Snes Dragon Quest 1-3 and the PSX Dragon Quest 4 and jsut read the script dumps as you play them.

I'm mainly looking to play through 5 and 6 first, considering I haven't even touched them yet.

If guides are readily available, I think that I might try one of em.

I have the GBC DW 1&2 and 3. I realize that the SFC versions are pretty much the same... but I think that I'd just rather play them on my big screen. :)

Every place that I've found online offering DQ 4 PSX is charging an arm and a leg. It looks really well done, but is it worth the 60-70 bucks?

I'd recommend getting Dragon Quest 6 over 5 unless your going to get them both at the same time. I can't tell by your post if you own them or not. Part 6 is a little harder as you have a class system and bunch of spells and skills and a fair amout of them don't translate well and could take some trial and error. If you have an X-Box it might not be a bad idea to to play the translated versions as you can play those on a big screen.

RPGclassics also has a pretty guide for part 6. Not sure for Part 5 but there's a good chance they have one for that as well.

It's worth getting Dragon Quest 4 but I don't know for that price. You could probably get it off of Yahoo with one of the surrogate auction sites for half the price more or less. I got mine for about $20.00 or so. I've never looked for it on Ebay so I have no idea if it will appear cheaper than what you have seen it for.

If you don't mind playing with an emulator, there are English patches for DQ 5 and 6. You can get both at www.dejap.com. I have played most of the way through DQ5, and the translation is excellent, although the game isn't quite as good as Dragon Warrior 4.

For Dragon Quest 6 just get which ever patch is the No Progress one. It might just be either to get it from No Progress's site since there are 3 or 4 different patcches on Dejap's site.

There also are 2 different Dragon Quest 5 translations. Byuu's translation is a little more literal than Dejap. It does however have a few grammar errors her and there. Although the Dejap patch seems to have a few more bugs in it.

The dejap patch tries to be more faithful to the Dragon Warrior herritage, and keeps the old enemy and item names. I haven't tried the other one, but it is more of a Dragon Quest translation, rather than Dragon Warrior.

I own Dragon Quest 6, and I wouldn't say it's all that hard to play through. I've figured out MUCH more complicated games with my limited Japanese skills.

Ian Kelley's guides at GameFAQs are great too.
