Adventure. Excitement. Chilled monkey brains. Ah yes, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom had them all. Even though the Temple of Doom was the first PG-13 movie ever, I saw it at age eleven when it came out in 1984. A year later, Atari released the video game based on the movie. Whipping thuggee guards has never been so much fun, although wisely Atari did not allow players to whip Indy's sidekicks from the movie, Short Round and Willie.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom by Atari is Schenley's MAME Club pick of the week!

Remember, you don't have to be a member of the club to download the game and write up a review, but by joining you get the honor of picking a game to share with the group during your week. If you would like to join, simply send me a PM and I will add you to the list!

Schenely has also told me that he's writing up something pretty cool about this submission, so watch this thread closely for that too!

Kaine23 will be the one garnishing game goodness next week. Until then, throw me the idol and I'll throw you the whip, and don't forget to ...

... MAME ON!

Well, it's the NES version with prettier graphics. I didn't like the NES version, so what's left? Not much. This one is frustrating to me for some reason, though I never really understood why. Rescuing people is rarely my cup of tea so that's probably the reason. Come on, I just want to whip people to death! Screw the kids! LOL

Side note: Is this going to get sticky-fied in the main forum? This one is already falling to the dreaded page 2!

I remember in the late 80's/ early 90's this was still sitting in the local skating rink. It was parked next to moon patrol or whatever its called. Aside from TMNT, this was my second favorite game there. I was on the Indy kick, heck, still am, and I remember pumping quarter after quarter into the machine. I enjoyed the rail cart experience the most.

While I never really got passed the the temple area where you pick up the stone, as a kid, this tiem around I made it to the rope bridge and after dying, I gave up. If the bridge is the last area, then I feel this was an easy game today.

I remember the controls being a bit more precise on the actual unit, but maybe thats because i was using a 8 way joystick instead of 4 arrow keys.

Music coulda been better, but was still a decent rendition.

I rate this game

I always dug this game. Although I don't know if I've ever gotten past the first screen :D

Good game, slightly imprecise controls (probably because of the switch to keyboard), good graphics...I like it :)

Ugh, missed my turn, been so busy lately. Anyway, I always loved this game as a kid since I was a big indiana jones fan. Glad to have a reason to fire it back up!

Come on, I just want to whip people to death!

How could you NOT love this game then? All it IS is whipping! Besides the guards, you can whip piles of bones, you can whip snakes ... hell, you can whip little protruding posts and swing from them! I haven't seen this much whipping since Devo was popular! You can whip the guards over and over, moving them down and eventually pushing them off the ledges. It's like a Madonna coffee table book with all that whipping!

This game is one of those that for some reason I was just naturally good at. I can remember the first time I ever played it getting through the mine scene. Maybe my reflexes are slowing, but I didn't do as good tonight. It might be the difference between using a joystick and a gamepad too. I'll have to try it on my MAME cab later and see if I do any better.

Well, there have defiintely been worse licensed games before. I actually like this one a bit. I never played it much as a kid, probably because I wasn't any good at it.

Here's how I see it:

The highs:
- fun gameplay and action
- captures feel of the terrible movie
- multiple screens

The lows:
- weird control
- terrible AI

It's weird how there really isn't much of a penalty for leaving the kids behind (besides the message to make you feel guilty about it). I also expected this game to have a time limit, especially in the stages where you rescue the kids.

As I said, I'm not doing too well, but I enjoy the game somewhat. Current high score: 102,500.

Sorry guys... I thought I had more time to get ready - the summer's flying by. I've got a ton of projects - professional, personal, and arcade related going on right now, and trying to juggle them all.

I will have my post finished in a day or two. I think you'll like it!

Well, I finished my "report." I was hoping to paste it inline in this forum, but the pictures didn't show up, so I put it up on my website...

http://63.147.233.69/clavicle/arcade/indy.htm

Please check it out, and let me know what you think.

Sorry if the formatting is a little off - I used Word to create it - not the best HTML creator in the world! It's too late right now to try and fix it. It looked OK before I uploaded!

Tomorrow, I will try to beat my high score and let you all know what it is!

Very nice report, Schenley! It's quite a detailed comparison of the movie and the game. Now, if only everyone posted a report like this every week! ;)

WOW! Great job, Schenley! That was awesome, and I could tell by that report that you are truly a fan of both the game and the movie!

In the report you said that you always chose medium, but couldn't remember why. If you choose easy, you cannot beat the game -- I don't think the final level shows up in easy mode. That was probably why!

This game and I spent alot of time together when I was younger. Anytime I went to an arcade or bowling alley, this was the first game I'd look for. When I was younger and was really "in the zone" I could get least 2 of the 3 stones.

Great review, btw!
