http://digitalpress.5u.com/media/dp_mountainking.jpg</a>Long Lost Commercials Free to Download: We've uncovered an original VHS of Atari 2600 video game commercials that NONE of us have ever actually seen aired. The quality is pretty good so we converted them to MPG files and uploaded them to the DP media server. These are LARGE files. We'll upload a new one for you each week, four total. Plays great with Windows Media Player. The first one is CBS' Mountain King... can you guess the other three? Find them at our screening room, HERE (http://digitalpress.5u.com/media).

What's this going to do to the bandwith? Are we going to be crawling later?

Regardless, it's worth it. I love this stuff.

I think it's on a different server/website :)

I think it's on a different server/website :)

Yeah, it's on what we call "the media server". It's disconnected from the rest of the site and the forums. I did the same with the advertisement gallery and the Room of Doom pages, which is why the forums have been more consistent of late. SLOW, but consistent.

We are STILL working on moving the entire site to a nice speedy server. I have the server, I have everything I need ON the server - I'm just waiting for our administrator to solve the "how do you move the existing forum to the new place" problem. So, any day now.

Kind of ironic that when I come here now on the same day were slowed to abysmal levels, but not because of the video. 155 users at once?!?! Wow.

... can you guess the other three?

I'll wager that one of them is GORF.

Is it the one with that song "When you're playing Mountain King, music is.. everything"? :D

Let's see....

No, see THAT's the one I remember! THIS one seems to be a rejected version... "When you're playing Mountain King, life is no... easy thing" :D

Better still, these commercials will get more obscure - and more fun! - as we reveal each new one. Enjoy!

Thanks DP!

I'd guess that Tunnel Runner is one of the other three commercials.

They grow more obscure, eh?

I'm guessing one of these will "boost" us to the skies, if you follow me... ;)

I get an error when trying to download the Tunnel Runner one....

"Document contains no data
Sorry, the document you requested http://digitalpress.5u.com/media/dp_tunnelrunner.mpg has been truncated to length zero!"

Mountain King caused me no trouble.... :o

Nice "animation" on the MK video - HA!
I haven't -BOOOP- seen that style -BOOOP- of animation since -BOOOP- grade school.

LOL

I'd wager that it's a pre-production animatic.

Keep on finding more of these DP!

Thanks DP!

I'd guess that Tunnel Runner is one of the other three commercials.

You are correct, sir!

And in case anyone missed the front page news item, this is the second of four lost commercials unveiled. Try to figure out the last two... you should be able to figure them out from the hints we've given if you know your classics.

Can't wait to see some screen shots and hopefully a chance to purchase in cartridge format.

Someone e-mailed me that the girl in the Solar Fox commercial is Jane Krakowski (most recognized from Ally McBeal). Can anyone confirm this?

Also up is the final installment in the CBS lost commercials series. This is a complete commercial of an UNRELEASED game, WINGS!

And yet another surprise. We've discovered the game/prototype as well! It will be on display at CGE, we haven't figured out what we're going to do with it after that. Hopefully I can convince my partners to release the ROM. We've got a few other previously unreleased games as well, details coming soon.

The sound effects in that commercial are familiar. Yars Revenge perhaps? Maybe they were planning on putting the "real" sounds in there later?

3 times as exciting, eh? :)

There seems to be something wrong with the Mountain King commercial. Solar Fox, Tunnel Runner and Wings all play fine, but the Mountain King file doesn't even have an mpeg header in it. The file I downloaded is 3,471,136 bytes long and won't play at all.

I also had the same problem with the Mountain King commercial. Wouldn't run in the 2 programs I tried it with.

Hmmm. It's running fine for me, it's opening up in Windows Media Player 9. Do you have the DIVX plug-in? That could be the cause. I'll try re-uploading it this weekend too.

Is the video running RIGHT for anyone? Maybe the upload the media server went bad.

I was able to pull 'em down and play 'em.

Yes, I have DivX, but this file doesn't appear to be an AVI file either. In fact, after looking at the raw contents of the file, I don't see anything that looks like any known video header. Just to be sure, I ran it through G-Spot which also couldn't identify it.

Also, the other three commercials are 5mb each, while the MK one is only 3mb. It looks like the start of the file may have gotten chopped off somehow.

A re-upload would be appreciated, thanks!

Has the Mountain King commercial been re-iploaded? GetRight tells me that the file is still the exact same size.

You may have to wait a week or so if it still doesn't work - Joe's across the country doing the CGE boogie. 8-)

Just a reminder that we're still waiting for a re-upload of the mountain king commercial. I just checked and the one on the site is still the exact same length as the one that won't play, so I'm guessing it was never fixed.

Hey, I just downloaded this "3 Hours of Mtv - 1983" which includes the commercials. After watching Mark Goodman announce Police concert dates for Nov 1983, up comes commercials for Huffy bikes, some cologne, then Atari 5200 Galaxian! LOL

Fun stuff to watch. Snag it on alt.binaries.mpeg.video.music if you're so inclined. :)

Man I would if I knew how.. but VIDEO is my weakness, as in I wouldn't know the first thing on how to edit it. I have the full blown versions of Adobe Premiere and can get any software necessary, but when it comes to video formats, compression, codecs, editing, etc. etc. I am admittedly weak in knowledge... I'll give it a try though... :embarrassed:

If the Galaxian commercial is the only one, can you or someone post just that? A 3-hour file d/l with d/u ain't happenin :/

The Atari 5200 Galaxian commercial is 40 minutes into the first CD, by the way - and it's not the only videogame commercial on the video. I saw another one near the end of that same CD though I forget what game it was for. There may be others I missed, I had the video running in the background sort of as "ambience". It is a terrific piece of TV nostalgia and the video is of good quality as well.

If I can get them on a CD, I can have a friend of mine clip out the commercials and put them online for d/l

I can put the AVI files on two CD's... is that all you need?

digitalpress

I'm sure there are avi editing apps out there, have you tried download.com?

Also: I've tracked the problem with the Mountain King video back to the mirror server it was on. I've moved it here:

I don't know what that was, but it's always good to see vintage Roth. But I will be contacting him concerning my rainbow invite, maybe it got lost in the mail.
