View Full Version : Rude employees

Today I went to a Bookmans that I usually don't go to (it's an Arizona book/game/cd store for those of you who don't know), and the girl in the electronics is the sullen one who is never polite to me, or anybody for that matter.

I ask her if I can look at the Super Nintendo games for 5 minutes, very politely, as they are in a locked case. I tell her I am looking for some label variations (i.e. look at the massive, huge stack of Starfoxes for the weekend cart). She rolls her eyes as I say this. Note that this woman is extremely bent on supervising all customers and standing behind them to prevent them from running away with any 5.00 games.

So what comes out of her mouth?

"No, I'm not going to stand around for that long."

She then procedes to explain that if I see something in particular I want, she'll get it (OH, THANK YOU! REALLY?) but she won't wait for me to look through the stacks.

x_x WTF?

It's not up to her how long I look at the games. 5 minutes? That's her JOB. I wasn't asking her to stand around for an hour, just 5 minutes, but she felt she'd rather go back to tinkering with her toys behind the counter rather than helping a paying customer. So I wait around for 45 minutes for one of the other employees, Thomas, to come back from the backroom, and all the while she is ignoring me.

At one point, another woman asked what I needed, and I told her I was waiting for Thomas... And she gives me a very dirty look and asks what's so important that she can't help me.

WHAT IS WITH THIS PLACE? Finally, Thomas shows up and even though he said he was on his break, he helped me out. I should have told the first woman that she wans't doing her job and I would go to the manager... Ugh.

What do you do when something like this happens to you? Or does anybody ever have this happen? :eek 2:

Ha rude employees are a dime a dozen around were i live. I remember this one manager at the gamestop in natick (MA) named Andraw. Man this guy was the biggest bastard ever. Every single time i go in there he would give me some sort of shit (the other guys weren't much better either). I bring in a playstation he ask did i steal it, i pre-order a game (zelda WW) he loses the slip and so on. Luckly he's gone now but the EB right next door has this dorky nebbish that always gets pissed if you ask him a question. Like a couple of weeks ago i heard that wario world and arc the lad were both going for 9.99 a peice. So i go up to the counter to ask him if they were. Mind you he was in a veryyyyy deep conversation about halo with some anime geeks. So he gets all snappy because i just wanted to know if they were. Other times i have ask him to go see if they had any "new" copies of games out back (he's one of those types that loves to give you the shelf copy) and he started to bitch that it was to far and he didn't want to. Yeah because we all know it's so hard to walk 15 feet. x_x

I just read the thread and I would have told her that I am a customer who might be interested in buying merchandise and if she wouldnt help me I would like to see the manager.

I have had this happen at a game crazy , but I was persistant and basically they ended up printing a list up for me and then I made them look for anything I wanted.

Listen , I used to work retail years ago and worked in the service end of the car business for years. You cant just turn away a customer. I mean it doesnt sound like you were a dick or anything  I mean if that was the case then I would side with the employee ;)

But I know you and I am sure you were just wanting to look at all the labels.
I have tought you well my padewon learner :P

That should not have been a big issue with little miss bitchy.

Mr. White's notes on shopping:

(Be sure to bring cool sunglasses, pruning shears, and a pistol.)

When you're dealing with a store like this, they're insured up the ass. They're not supposed to give you any resistance whatsoever. If you get a customer or an employee who thinks he's Charles Bronson, take the butt of your gun and smash their nose in. Everybody jumps. He falls down screaming. Blood squirts out of his nose. Nobody says fucking shit after that. You might get some bitch talk shit to you, but give her a look like you're gonna smash her in the face next. Watch her shut the fuck up. Now if it's a manager, that's a different story. Managers know better than to fuck around, so if you get one that's giving you static, he probably thinks he's a real cowboy, so you gotta break that son of a bitch in two. If you wanna know something and he won't tell you, cut off one of his fingers. The little one. Then tell him his thumb's next. After that he'll tell you if he wears ladies underwear.

If you get hungry after a little shopping, go and get a taco.

After reading the messages on this board for a while, I am very much left with the impression that there is no such thing as a polite, knowledgeable, and considerate video game store employee. (Well, except maybe for independent stores.)

I rarely come across rude employees here for some reason. I can't even think of the last time I dealt with one.

Honestly, even the independent store owners here are assholes...most of them are even worse than the chain guys.

I've given up even buying at stores for the most part. It's ridiculous how they treat you....like working at a friggin GAME store for minimum wage makes you some sort of holier than thou god? I swear that's how they act. In fact, I went to *gasp* APPLY at the local EB....they had SIGNS out for hiring. The manager was there...was like "Oh well, we don't accept APPLICATIONS. We don't even have any. Bring me your resume. So I did and then he gives me this crap about how you have to be willing to work on the 10 hours a week he has available and how it's a really important job, etc etc. Gave me this whole self-important rigamarole...it was really bizarre. Then he asked me what experience I had. I said "it's right there on the resume I JUST handed you." He gets all rude then and says "I know that, I was just checking to see if YOU knew what was on your resume." What a friggin ass. He's always a dick to me now too. I mean jesus...requiring a resume that you won't look at for a 10 hour a week job? I don't need bullshit like that.

ANd holy CRAP do I want a taco now! *bitch slaps Mr. Smashy for making him hungry* Oops...thought you were a rude game store employee :D

I know one and only one polite and knowledgable video game store employee, and he runs an independent store in my area. People like this are definitely few and far between but do exist.

Needless to say, he gets a ton of business from me and many others.

Isn't he the guy that smokes a lot of weed? LOL

I've never had any problems with any game employees...in fact, the manager of the one ebgames and I have "known" each other for about ten years now. She always gives me free stuff and told her employees to not put that damn sticker on my Playstation games. :)

It's probably because they all know by now that I'm a serious gamer/collector and not some clueless mother buying stuff for her kids.

Ive went through a lot of game stores and found a lot dicks, but ive also found a lot of knowledgeable people that go out of there way to help you.

For example just the other day i piked up times of lore for the nes in a cheap bin at my local game x change in moore (best one) and the guy told me it was put there by accident becouse it was there only copy and they werent suppuse to sell a last copy.

But then he looks at me and hands me the game and tells me that he'll sell it just dont tell any of the other employes that he did this.

Thats looking out for your fellow gamer and I salute him for that.

But then there are those dark & horrible places like (do I dare speak its horride name) FUNCOLAND!!!

I hate funcoland, But I do wish to work there so I can make it a better place were i can assist a fellow gamer (and steal shit from a companie who realy deserves it)

Since we knock the chain policies all the time here: the local EB has finally stopped using the god-awful yellow sticker. They still sticker it, but it's a very easy to remove, clear sticker. I don't know if it's nationwide, but if it is, good for EB.

I don't think that its really fair to pick on game store employees exclusively. The sad fact is that good customer service and polite, helpful employees are few and far between in ANY retail enviroment nowadays.

I'm sure that part of the problem is that you get what you pay for, even with employees and most retail jobs generally pay shit. But I have to agree that there really seems to be a lack of friendly people in retail.

Those stickers haven't found their way to Portland yet.

But that sounds cool, I hope EB eventually implements it nationwide. And maybe Gamestop will take a hint.

It didn't happen to me but when I was at an EB Games this gross chick working there was at the counter and this ghetto guy comes up and asks if they sell the thing that works with the Xbox to download games and movies (he had no idea what he was talking about and was confused on the whole subject). The moment he says that the lady goes, "Oh you mean the device that downloads illegal stuff to your Xbox so you don't have to pay for it!? When all it does is lower our business, do you think we would sell that!?" He just looked at her and left. Then I heard her talking with another employee on how she had one.

What a bitch.

I can confirm that the last time I bought a used game at EB last month they used a clear sticker instead of one of the awfull yellow ones.

It really depends on each store. At my local EB I'm well known and I talk shop with the manager and a couple of the employes. They know what I like, make suggestions based on that, took time to help me find exactly what I was looking for (such as when I got my used XBox a few months ago), and always call on my pre orders. (In fact they called yesterday saying they were getting in NCAA Football 2005 a few days early and they would be in that night. Too bad I'm damn broke, but I'll raise the money somehow! ;) )

If you get rude people, ask to talk to a manager. Failing that, take your business elsewhere. Game stores are a dime a dozen these days.

I have yet to come accross the rude or arrogant game store employee. I've met my share of annoying ones but that's about it. This is probably due to the fact that my little part of the world is pretty laid back. It's a small market. No rat race. Even the pawn shop guys are pretty decent.

If you ever hear me talking about moving to Vancouver just smash my head in with one of the original XBox controllers. Not because I don't like Vancouver. I just don't want the go go go lifestyle.

Fortunately, the employees around here aren't so bad. Most of them leave me be as I browse.

The only bad store was the EB in the mall, but its okay now that the manager has been replaced with the nice guy that knows me from across the street.

Its never a bad idea to make sure the employees know you (as long as YOU arent the ass). I make a point of going into both EBs here at least once every two weeks. This way they remember who I am, and if I continuously buy stuff from them (even if its just a $2.99 SNES game), they remember me as a repeat customer, and they don't hesitate to bend over backwards for me when push comes to shove (and they have!).

If anyone is familiar with Newcastle, I can definitely recommend avoiding Charlie's in the Green Market - the staff are incredibly insolent and would rather sit there playing on a Gameboy than actually serve customers. And give a sigh and a "How pathetic are you?" look when I've asked them to check whether there certain games include the manual.
Not to mention the stack of Japanese DC games and PAL MegaCD/32X/Saturn games that have been sat there for at least 3 years, but everytime I ask to look through them I'm told "They're not priced yet" or "They're not for sale" or "You'll have to come back when the manager is here". If it's anything like the rest of their stock, it'll be vastly overpriced anyway.

My experience with these stores vary greatly from place to place (and boy do I have a lot of places)...

1. Gamestop and EB - Very nice people that all know me by name, neither have any rude employees, but both have one or two employees who are a few screws loose.

2. Local Store - Game Cavern - Nice people there that work there, but every time I go there, they have like 3 or 4 dumbass punk kids just hanging out with the employees in the way of the customers. I mean, everytime...EVERY TIME...I go in there I hear these words muttered..."my mom should be coming to pick me up soon". You'd think im exaggerating. I'm not. and it's very unprofessional.

3. Rhino Games - Attack of the Hip Hoppin employees. "Hi, can I see this game over here?", "sho nuff dawg". Nice guys, but they keep telling me about how "deez video games goin to da next level" and how I should start saving all my NES games because "dey gonna be worth somethin"....even though I've told em I collect them every time I go in there. LOL

4. Gamerush - Mixed feelings here, on one hand some of the employees are really nice and don't mind helping you or letting you look at a disk or see if a manual is in the case...but the others hate it and I get a long winded sigh when I ask then to do it.

I watch customers when I go into these stores, and honestly, I can see how after time the employees get fed up and think all customers are idiots. I don't know how they can stand it, it's insane. Sad really

I had my worst experience ever buying games yesterday in "Cash Converters". Someone must have just traded in a DC as among the wrestling games were three gems - Ecco, Sega GT and Star Wars Ep 1 Racer at £4 each. All the cases were intact (does anywhere in the UK still sell replacement DC game cases?) and instructions present so I carefully take them to the counter and politely ask to look at the discs. The guy behind to the counter picks them up, chucks them down whilst he fishes out the discs then slams them back on the counter. Thankfully they all survived, then he throws them into a carrier bag! I almost wish he had cracked one of the cases so I could have complained and demanded he swap it over!

By contrast, the 2 nicest guys I know are independents - one a "proper" store and one runs a stall in the local undercover market over the weekend, they both always have to to chat and haggle on prices.

I really don't run into a lot of rude clerks at any stores. Gamestop and EB are typical some of the workers are really nice and helpful and some of them are just asses. Then there's my favorite store an independent called Game Haven all the clerks are really nice and will do anything from reccomending you games to letting you test them out on one of the many systems there.

most stores in my area, the sales people are pretty good.except,my local eb!!god, these people are rude.when the eb store first opened,i would be in there every week for about a year.then,i was going to buy a copy of shinobi for ps2,and i told the clerk(james)that i wanted a new version, then he tells me,no,you want the used version, you will save money.but the used version was only 3 dollars cheaper,so i say,no thanks,i will just take a new version instead.then he rudely says, well,i guess your just not smart enought to save money.another time they had a game priced pretty low(legends of wrestling),and i like that game,so i asked for a copy, and the clerk goes,no,that game isnt very good, you wouldnt like it.i told him,i have played it before, and i like it,and for the price,i want a copy.he mumbles under his breath.i would get lots of stuff like that, usually done by the manager(kerry)or james(store clerk).i dont go in there anymore unless there is a used game they have i want, and i cant get it cheaper anywhere else.thank god they put a gamecrazy in my area!!!

I notice that we get alot of these "game store clerks were jerk-off threads"
And I have run across a few..... But it is few and far between. :D

The people at the EB,Gamestops and other stores near me are all pretty nice. Halbert was talking about Bookmans and I have thought thet were kind of snobish at times. But for the most part I really havent had bad luck with employees. I gueess I am just too cool for them not to like me. It is either that or the fact that I am so big and intimatating LOL

( 6'4" 250 ish for the record) :P
