Look at http://www.planetnes.com and you will see what I mean! They have the EXACT same Sidebar layout, same colors, ect ect, just added an extra line between each line. What a ripoff....Cobra Commander!

well it's flattering, at least he could of done blue bars or something.
That guy is a member of the forum to isn't he? Oh well nothing anyone can do about it, except make fun of him for lack of orginality. LOL

Well, I think the colors are questionable, but aren't this and other similar sites just using the same website/forum software package? There's nothing wrong with that.

:hmm: That's pretty shameless.
The phpBB forum software means a lot of boards will look similar, but the rest of that site is just a straight rip from DP.

Wow, he really copied EVERYTHING, from style sheets to the meta tag values! I'd imagine he'll want to tweak that stuff a little since it would seem silly to have people looking for Odyssey information to have his page come up on a search engine!

Anyway, this doesn't really bother me at all. We did spend a lot of time with the site design so it's my pleasure to have others benefit from the work. Why do it all twice? I guess it would have been nice for him to ask but it's really not an issue for me. Our data is proprietary - our site layout is not.

Wow...Cobra Commander himself. I'm impressed :eek 2: .

Somebody ought to send Mainframe (http://www.joeheadquarters.com/charlist_joes3.shtml#mainframe) to go deal with his ass.

The software comes with a list of different styles to choose from. Each can be fully customized (different icons, backgrounds, etc.) or you can design your own. DP offers 2 preset styles (redIce and subSilver) and 2 custom ones (subRed and Chronicles). Since DP's default style is subRed, it would appear this other site is clearly copying DP. I guess we should be happy he's just copying the look, and not the content (like some other...)

You can check out all the preset styles here: http://www.phpbb.com/styles/demo.php (and determine the 'originality' of other forums :P ).

Well yes, but its not the layout of the forums that aren't stolen, rather the layout of the main page (index.htm).

Joe, you are far more generous than I. Plagarism royally pisses me off, especially when its my work being stolen :)

I can picture that Episode of GI Joe right now... I have a strange urge to go grab as many GI Joe screenshots as possible and arange them in a comical comic manner about this.

Looks like he got rid of the meta tag stuff, meaning he's obviously seen this thread. So to you: BAD BOY BAD.

Part of the reason why I chose to use the angry face is because this thread reminds me of all the idiotic sellers on eBay that think they're auction page code is sacred or something and disable middle/right clicking. I JUST WANT TO USE MY WHEEL MOUSE TO SCROLL DOWN, NOT STEAL YOUR "IMPRESSIVE" GEOCITIES-ISH CODE!

Lamers.

Ok ok....
Let me try and defend myself. Mostly, what I wanted was... a new look yes, but the main thing I wanted was a layout with a frames. I know enpugh HTML to do basic pages with tables and stuff like that, but some of the things I wanted are a bit more complex than I can pull off from scratch just yet. I don't care about red bars or a certain kind of font or freaking meta tags.
Like I said on the the site, everything is just a placeholder. When I figure out how to properly do CSS's it'll be gone and I'll never darken your doorstep again.
Sorry....

If I were you, I would at least credit the original site for the original design while you're using it, at least until you get the knowledge in hand to make your own. DP doesn't seem to be too miffed about it, and I could understand wanting to have an up-to-date looking design but not having the techical know-how to pull this off. Or, I suppose you could just alter different values of the code until it's more or less unrecognizable, but I think you know this would only be a short-term solution.

In the end, if you want to have a nice looking site to pull in more visitors, while having your own individual look and feel to it(which would probably end up drawing in even more visitors), you're just going to have bite the bullet and hit the "books"(tutorials, same difference). Put some time into it, which if you want your site to do well and I'm sure you do, find some good tutorials, isn't that much to it really. It's a win-win situation, and as long as your content is interesting(and your own :D ), It'll be the CONTENT that'll shine, instead of maybe being entirely overlooked because of a whole situation like this.

Who cares it's just a friggin format and layout! Like Joe says if CONTENT was copied that's one thing. That's the real meat of plagiarism. But for black & red colors and web page tags.... come on.. give the guy a break. Nothing too inherently wrong with copying a friggin layout. Heck, it inspires me to take the template and build up another site :P

I have to agree with Joe. On the Internet, content is the coin of the realm. It really doesn't matter much what your site looks like, as long as navigation is easy and pages load fast. Content is king.

Personally, I would be flattered to discover others borrowing my site design. I take that as a compliment, and, hey, I spent a small eternity figuring out how to make everything look right. Beginners have to start somewhere. Just don't steal the words without giving credit and a textlink back.

Beginning webmasters should read as much as possible about HTML and web design. Sure, you don't need to worry about code nearly as much as even a few years ago, but it's important to understand why things work the way they do.

Another essential site for everyone: Web Pages That Suck. Go buy the WPTS books, while yer at it, too.

I think we've dogpiled this guy enough. We all learned HTML from something (or maybe we didn't!), but let's not go chasing anyone outta town by torchlight.

Besides, it could be worse - he chose a clean, neat layout to duplicate. It'd be really bad if he was guilty of running a site that was called a "visual hodgepodge" in a national gaming publication!

(I was in the middle of remodeling the entire site in the summer of 2001, but how were they to know that?) LOL

Heh. Come on the DP's got a shitload of content worth coming here for but lets not kid ourselves. The site it's self's not that pretty. But it's a good clean layout other's could beneift from using too. ;)

It's like someone stealing your car and 2 weeks later pulling up to your house and going "hey, check out my new car".

Actually it's more like if you got your car painted with a tribal design and your neighbor liked it so much he ran out and did it too. Cobra hardly hijacked the website. :P

I like the sub silver layout better than the sub red. You guys have put a lot of work into the sub red and deserve the credit for it. It is unique.
