View Full Version : advice needed/am I getting screwed?

I agreed to buy a NES (w/new 72 pin) with some games from a fellow DP'er about a month ago. I mailed the money order and got confirmation from him that he deposited it. He told me that he was waiting for it to clear before he mailed the package. I emailed him a few days later and was told that the package was going out next day (June 24). I asked for a tracking number. I have yet to hear back or receive the package.

I'm not going to name names here yet. This is someone who was actively posting up until a couple of weeks ago. He's been a member here for some time so I felt pretty secure in doing this deal. I've been giving him the benefit of the doubt with this but I'm getting a bit concerned that I've been had.

Any suggestions would be great.

When was the last time you PM'ed and E-mailed him?

It's a bummer you didn't pay with Paypal.

Well, the only person that I can think of that has "dissappeared" is hu_68000, who didn't give me everything in a deal we made, and he never responded to my PMs after that.

I tend to give the benefit of the doubt in these sorts of things. As the entire process only really started about a month ago, and you said this is with a regular, I wouldn't jump to conclude you're being shafted yet.

I'd recommend to be persistent in trying to contact the other party. Things happen, and it's possible your emails/pm's haven't been received. Hell, send a regular mail as well - you'll lose $0.37 and a few minutes of time, but USPS is far more reliable than email. You seldom hear of anybody losing their physical mailbox when their PC flakes out.

IMO, you should be patient before you name the guy and make any accusations.

"When was the last time you PM'ed and E-mailed him? It's a bummer you didn't pay with Paypal."

I've Pm'd him 3 times in the last 2 weeks and I've emailed him 2 times. I wanted to do PayPal but he didn't accept it.

"Well, the only person that I can think of that has "dissappeared" is hu_68000"

Not him.

Well, I would PM a mod or an admin and see if they can tell you the last time he accessed the website.

If someone did that to me, i would surely give away his/her name, so many other users can avoid trading with that person....that might put a little pressure on his/her part to end the current deals with you

Hmm, that's good (I suppose) that it's not that guy.

I suggest typing his/her username into Google (assuming it's not a generic phrase/name) and seeing what other places this guy/gal goes to.

I really think that something must have happened to this bloke since $60 is no reason to screw someone over and risk reputation. That being said, I want my stuff. I've really wanted a NES for the longest time. I'm tempted to just get another one on EBay for now.

This sucks...

Was it Slipdeath? I bought something off of him a few weeks ago and it arrived incomplete and he hasnt responded to my PMs about it.

Well I have to be honest and say that the answer to your question is really dependent on who it is that you bought this crap from. If it is someone that we all know and that some of us have had successful dealings with then we would be more likely to say no, while if it was someone that perhaps some of us had rocky deals with then we would be more likely to say yes. I understand your not wanting to divulge the persons name, but I dont think that we can help you unless you do.

Does it float? Does it weigh the same as a duck?

Seriously though: we can't see when someone last logged on, but if you PM me with this person's identity we can keep an eye on whether or not they're logging on as "hidden."

P.S. Burn her! Burn the witch!!!

Don't go to ebay! It is always sad to hear when deals go bad however if you wanted and NES and games I can hook you up with a system w/New pin and lots of games. I will accept paypal have completed over 25 deals on DP (been around for about 3 years) So you have nothing to worry about! PM me if you decide to go this route 8-)

It's kind of a bad sign that the guy guy didn't have many posts at board. I've been burned a couple times by dealing with non "regular" members of a forum myself.

You mailed the guy a money order correct? I'd take the address you mailed it to and look it up in an online phone book, see if you can't get his phone number and contact him.

Can't you? Look on anyone's profile and it says when they were last here.

If you use the subSilver board style, you can see when the person last logged on here.

Personally, I think it would be better to create a "Hey WHOEVER, where are you post" than for all these people to guess who it is.

Everybody they guess is theoretically getting libeled.

Ah, that'll explain why I can see it - subSilver is best for covert browsing at work ;)

Unless they're hidden, then you can't tell.

Not sure if this was directed at me. This guy joined in December and had been pretty active on these boards until he fell off the face of the earth.

Sorry to hear about this...I hope it works out..

When a saw the topic It caught my eye..
I just sold a NES on Ebay..W/games and repaired 72..

This is the main thing I sell....

I only take money orders, but I never had to wait for them to clear..
(The hell with PAYPAL/For Me)
But,I do think the clearing thing is possible.

One reason I only take/use Money orders is because I can trace them and they can be traced..and I have traced them before.
I've never been screwed with a MO...

I ship the stuff out the next day....I find MOs to be very easy to deal with.I've been dealing with them for yrs.

But,dealing with Money orders may not be easy for everyone..

IMO-I think if you only deal with MOs then you should create an Easy/quick way to cash them..
Otherwise Paypal then..
But you may be dealing with a kid or someone who doesn't have many means of cashing...or getting out to the Post Office.

One reason why I hardly do any off Ebay dealing unless I know or researched the person..
(Too many scammers in this world)It's just too easy.

I always try and get a phone number with personal dealings.

Sure IMO...$60.00 is not worth scamming for...But for someone it may be.
If you don't post much...you could come back as a new member and scam again.
Plus that could be just one scam in a bunch of scams..adding up to a lot of money.

I'm not calling the person a scammer though..With luck I'll work out.

I'd trace the MO though....

Actually I searched your posts, saw a topic where a guy with 59 posts offered you an NES with 72 pin connector and assumed it was him. ;)

LOL Sneaky! And smart.

rscaramelo - are the PMs you sent still in your outbox? Because if they are then the member you were dealing with hasn't read them. But if they are in your sentbox, then he/she read them and is probably ignoring you. Whatever the outcome, I hope this doesn't jade you out of trading on DP forever! Most of the members here are trustworthy and I know I've made several good trades here.

The perp has contacted me and it sounds like it was an honest mistake. He's been away on vacation for the 2 weeks. Everything seems like it's about to be resolved. I'm glad I didn't do anything rash or make any crazy assumptions.

thanks for the help everyone...
