View Full Version : Playing Emulated PSX Games

I WOULD ask this in the Emulation forum, but that seems to have gone bye-bye since last time I looked.
I'm having problems with a couple of my older PlayStation games playing correctly on my PS2. Grandia, for example, has the WONDERFULL habit of locking up during battles randomly, often when I was just about to save.
I thought that perhaps I could copy my games with my CD-RW drive to my computer HD and then play them in a PlayStation emulator, hopefully with better results.
I'm not sure how to do this, though. Any help would be great.

Without getting this board into any trouble, http://www.epsxe.com/news.php would be a good starting off point.

I had exactly the same problem with Grandia on my PS2. Very disconserning during a boss battle. Anywho when I played the game on my PSX and PSone they worked just fine. I'd go that route.

ePSXe should play it just fne if you decide to go that route. Getting it to work can be a little tricky depending on your hardware, but once you get it up and running it works pretty well. I don't think you'll need to copy your game -- ePSXe should run the original I believe. If you want, you can use Nero or other similar programs and create an ISO of your disc. ePSXe can run the ISO directly from your computer's hard drive.
Grandia isn't on the official list of incompatible games, but on CD based systems we all unfortunately know a simple scratch, misalignment or speed difference could all contribute to a game locking up.
Here is the list of PSX games officially incompatible with the PS2:
Arcade Party Pak; Midway
Atari's Arcade Greatest Hits 2; Midway
Fighter Maker; Agetec
Final Fantasy Anthology; Square EA
International Track and Field; Konami
Judge Dredd; Activision
Monkey Hero; Take 2 Interactive
Mortal Kombat Trilogy; Midway
Tomba; SCEA

Final Fantasy Anthology isn't actually "incompatible".... it just has a graphical error on the save screen. You can still play it.
What Sony should have is two lists:
Incompatible (minor errors)
Unplayable (freezes/crashes)

I can confirm this. You can just stick your Grandia disc into your CD drive and play it that way.

epsxe is also a great alternative to playing import PSX games without having to deal with modding a Playstation.

I've heard of this problem with Grandia before... I doubt it's caused by a scratch. Although epsxe is great for import games and taking screenshots it's really not a perfect alternative to a real playstation. But in your case it will play Grandia fine. Just pop in the disk and play. (:

Felony 11-79 and GTA: London didn't work for me on a PS2.

Mortal Kombat Trilogy works fine on my PS2.
Mine does too. I have the Greatest Hits version.
