Is the SMB2 (NES) the "lost levels".

I used to play a version of SMB2 on famicom back in the day and I remembered it was hard and had two bowsers. I can't find it now on a famicom cart. But I see a SMB2 on a NES cartridge everywhere, Is that the same one? What about the lost levels I keep hearing? Please clarify before I purchase. Thanks.

SMB2 in Japan is what we know as "the lost levels". Basically as you said it was a harder, faster, more nastier version of SMB. Nintendo thought American players wouldn't be able to handle it, and hence released the Doki Doki Panic "hack" in the West as SMB2. Japan eventually got it, it was called "SMB USA" over there.

There's a good reason why you can't find SMB2 as a Famicom cart; it was only released for the disk system. Your best bet for being able to play it today? Buy a copy for the GBA when it comes out in Japan as part of the Famicom 20th anniversary collection (it's in series 3 next month).

It was also widely available as a pirate cart. That's how I bought mine when I first read of it's existence in EGM way back in the day :P

The Japanese SMB2, what we call the Lost Levels originally only saw release in USA on the SNES cart Mario All Stars. Later on, there was also the GBC game of SMB1 that had a bonus of SMB2, aka lost levels on it in the USA. Japans SMB2, which was much more similar to SMB 1 was only released on the Famicom FDS, except for a very rare pirate cart versions....I've never actually seen one though. I'll pay big $ if anyone can help me out on that one, heh heh.

The USA's SMB2 was just a sprite change from Dream Factory: Doki Doki Panic (also an FDS only game). They also added a different ending sequence, changed a couple tunes and sfx and a few other details.

USA's SMB2, when finally released in Japan had sort of a brown title screen, instead of the standard red-themed one. :-)

A pirate famicom cartridge of SMB2 went for $51 USD on eBay about a week ago. It does show up with some regularly, and usually less insane prices.

Just get a Honey Bee converter, or any other brand of 60 to 72 pin converter. They're everywhere up here in Canada. I assume it's the same in the US.

I had the Famicom pirate cart back in high school from Taiwan, but the quality of the cart is subtal, it broke down within a year, the problem was my buddy was playing this thing like 12 hours straight on a few ocassions.

I have a pirate Famicom cart of SMB2, and it's pretty cool. But one problem that I have with it is that you can't actually play as Luigi. If you choose to play as Luigi from the title screen, it will start and play, and your character is green like Luigi, but the top of the screen still says Mario, and his jumping and sliding characteristics have not changed like they do in the real Famicom Disk system version.

I also have a VERY interesting pirate NES multi-cart that includes this same game. The cart is called "Super Mario Party" and it has the following games on it:
1. Mario Bros. (the original)
2. Super Mario Bro I (yeah, that's how they spell "bros.")
3. Dream Mario Bro (which is not the USA SMB, but a glitchy reworked SMB1)
4. Golden Mario Bro (this is the Japanese SMB2 we're talking about)
5. Super Mario Bro II (our USA SMB2)
6. Super Mario Bro III (Japanese version of SMB3)

This is certainly my coolest pirtate item. If anyone is interested I can post pictures of both this cart and my Famicom SMB2. Lemme know, dudes.
