So I've got a crapload of (legal, of course) ROMs, and I need to rename them all to .bin files. Obviously I don't want to do this by hand. I'm sure there is an obvious and free answer to this ... Any help is much appreciated.

Right click on the file, click "rename," change the extension to "bin."
Or am I missing something here?

he doesn't want to do it by hand for all however many he's got. He wants something to do it for him.

yeah, I got a program called like....BARenameX because I had to rename my rom files to go to the xbox cause of the stupid rom file name rule. Was wondering why my damn roms wouldnt transfer....so try Xbox Scene (http://www.xbox-scene.com/) and check around the download area for a tool named BaRenameX or something like that.

Go to a command prompt and navigate the the said rom directory and type:
ren *.a26 *.bin
If your roms in that directory are named with the "a26" extension, this will rename then all with a "bin" extension...get it? Substitute "a26" with whatever the extension is if it is not "a26".

And if they're not all the same extension, simply type:
c:\directory> rename *.* *.bin
I guess DOS really is dying. :(

I wasn't aware that particular syntax was valid.
I was going to link to http://www.tusafe.com/nonags/fileren.html .

If you simply want to just rename their extensions to *.bin then do as flack says and ren *.<whatever> *.bin
However, for some renaming operations that you can't do too easily in DOS (like say... substituting a certain common text string on a thousand files with sequenced numbers.. 01, 02, 03. etc), THAT'S when a GUI comes in handy to do that kind of crap in a couple of seconds.
Here's one that's pretty small and free. It's at this site under programs (renamer.exe)
http://www.albert.nu/programs/Renamer/main.htm
I always install this on any machine I set up for precisely that purpose.. renaming huge batches of files :P

Oddly enough, I use that same program ... usually when I am burning mp3's onto CD's and the filenames are all too long in length.

Awesome. Thanks guys. Problem solved, used NE146's program, but the other ideas would have worked as well.
