Ahem.

I humbly approach you with my rhetorical hat in hand, with a most embarassing question.

How in the world do you eject the cd tray on the Sega CD model 1?

I picked it up today at a Goodwill. I had a feeling it may not work (it was pretty dirty) but I have been wanting one for awhile (it's just so much nicer lookin' than the model 2) and decided to roll the dice.

So I get home tonight, plug everything in (to the best of my knowledge) and realize, I have no idea what to do next! On the left side I see there is a "lock" switch. What does this do? Is this the eject switch? I hope not, 'cuz if it is the thing is broke.

Thanks for your help!

Turn on the Genesis system and it should tell you what button to press on the controller (it should be start if I remember correctly) to eject the tray.

Ah! Sounds easy enough! I shall press all the buttons and see what happens.

This does bring up another question . . .

When I turned on the Genesis the screen turned from the TV feed to just a plain black screen (no static.) Is this because the CD is toast? Or have I not propperly set up the system? I have both power supplies plugged in and then the RF connector from the Genesis to the TV. Do I need to do something with the audio/video outs on the CD? Or should it be cool with just the RF connection?

Thanks!

I believe you have it set up correctly. You should get a screen that pops up that says Sega CD and tells you to press start. If your not getting that screen, then it may be toast. Anyone else confirm this...its been a while since I had this unit.

Ah well, I suspected as much.

At least now I have another system to take apart for the heck of it. Who knows? Stumbling around inside of it I may accidentally fix it. Stranger things have happened . . .

For the time being, tho, it looks like I'm stuck with my rather unattractive model 2.

Thanks for the help, Drex.

If anyone knows a thing or two about repairing these bad boys, feel free to chime in!

I believe you need a mix cable that connects the Genesis to the Model 1 CD system for it to display properly. It's been a LONG time since I had one...can't remember the specifics.

Try cleaning the contacts and make sure the power supply the CD unit has is the correct P.S. (look online for the specs or just flip the CD unit over to check out the voltages).

That's all the advice I can think of.

For as dirty as the outside was (actually, it wasn't too bad. it cleaned up real easy) the insides look pristine. Nothing jumps out as looking out of place, but I have only dug pass the RF shielding for now.

Cleaning the contacts--good idea. I'll try that before I completely rip this thing athunder.

I don't have the original mixing cable, but I probably have something that will work just as well lying around here somewhere. It'll just take some searching to turn it up.

Thanks for all the tips!

All you need to know...

http://sf.victoly.com/SCD/

oh, and once you get it powered up, the Reset button opens the tray

btw, are either of the lights on the front of the SegaCD coming on? It might have a blown fuse if someone hooked up too powerful of a power supply to it - for instance a NES P.S. will blow out the fuse.

I have seen instructions on how to fix the fuse... lemmie see if I can dig em up.

it's for a SCD2 tho... never had my SCD1 open, so I dunno if its the same

Thanks Blackjax! That's good stuff. That'll be helpful for whenever I stumble across a 32x too. Unfortunately, the CD didn't come with any of the hardware so I can't hook the Genesis snuggly into it, but I can live with that.

No, absolutely no lights come on when I hook it up. Could be a blown fuse, eh? That sounds fixable. Now if I only knew what I was doing . . .

I'll go through that link for the CD2 and see if I can translate it for the model 1. Is there any easy way to check if a fuse is bad?

There's no cables needed between the Genesis & SegaCD, you just slot the two together.
If there's no power, then you've probably got a blown fuse. Luckily, it's a piece of cake to fix - this thread in the Technical & Restoration Forum (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=32571) got mine up & running after a similar problem - all you need to do is yank the F1 fuse out and twist the wires together (or solder in a new fuse if you want to do it 'properly').

Super! Perhaps fixing my Channel F will be this easy too. One can always hope . . .

Now I can't wait to get home and try this out. Lessee . . . only 8+ hours to go. Siiiiiiigh.
