Star Control II was the reason I bought the 3DO. The system was very good, but the price was insane when it came out, so noone bought it.

Other 3DO games that rocked: Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Return Fire, Battlesport, Trip'd.

I don't have any experience with the CD-I or Vectrex.

Yes, 3DO's version of Star Control 2 was easily the best. It is an action adventure RPG, which takes place in space. The game's graphics might look dated, but everyone I know that has played this game has it listed as one of their all time favorite games. Also, the game included a head-to-head mutliplayer battle mode called "Super Melee". It let you fight against your friends using the various ships from the game. If you have not yet played Star Control 2, then GIVE IT A TRY! A couple years ago, the original developers allowed for an opensource free port of the 3DO version to Mac, Windows, and Linux!

http://sc2.sourceforge.net/

The 3DO had another gem that was originally made for the 3DO and years later ported to the PC and Playstation: "Return Fire" and "Return Fire Maps of Death". The 3DO version was the best. Its basically an arcade action real-time strategy game. Far more action and simplicity than a typical RTS.

So yeah, people bought a 3DO for those two games alone! I know people that still play Super Melee matches regularly LOL

Vectrex rocks.

But I am sucker for green vector line graphics, so I may be biased. LOL

Also interesting (but ruined by frame rate) is 3DO Need For Speed, which was the first release in the series.

Unlike the PS1 port that came out a year or so later, NFS on the 3DO features all road courses, no circuits, and there's cops to outrun everywhere. This feature was dropped from the playstation NFS games until Hot Pursuit, IIRC.

The original ad for 3DO NFS was great, too. It's all dialogue between a car that's been pulled over and a highway patrolman.

Cop: "Do you know why I pulled you over?"

Driver: "No, officer."

Cop: "You were speeding. Do you know how fast you were going?"

Driver: "Yeah.... uh., no, not really. The little needle stops moving at 120."

Also dated now but amazing at the time was FIFA soccer. Get 6 players in there and you were good to go.

Finally, if you want to play Return Fire like it should be played, you need a CH Flightstick. Unfortunately, quite a few were made without the pass-through connector for the second player, so connecting two can sometimes be difficult.

Yeah 3DO was a good system, which was plagued by a huge price tag...I still remember playing the interactive over at media play back in the day LOL I always wanted one back then but not for as much as it was. Either way, there a re a few good games, like they said star controll being one of them, check the dp guide out , it will tell you more
