I was looking at the previous topic about burned games on the Dreamcast, and I was wondering whether the Saturn could read burned games. Does it or does it not work. If it doesn't work, is there any way to make it? Finally, will the Saturn read burned discs of foreign games? In not, how can I make it?

Of course, if you are wondering, and if it matters, I am only interested in playing archived copies of games I own. :D

You need to mod the saturn.

Region mod and backup mod are two different (and both necessary) mods.

Go to www.gamesx.com for the region mod options. The switchless is pretty cool.

I know I could do the mods if I wanted to, but I dont really like the idea of messing with a system I only own one of. Im not really afraid of wrecking it, I just want to have an "original" system. I might try it anyway.

Is there a way to play backed up foreign games without modding the console? I have heard of devices that plug into the cartridge slot, but I dont know if any of those will do the trick. Or if they are acquire-able.

there is a swap trick that works

depending on which system you have - you may need fast hands

Generally the backup mod is easier to do as I've done it myself. You don't have to do the region mod if you don't want to. Of course if you play a foreign game you'll still need a converter cart. When the Saturn emulators get good you should be able to play burn games on it without any mods like with most of the other CD emulators.

If you do want to try it out you could always get a cheap Saturn somewhere. As for the backup mod you can only do it on a Model 1. For swapping I think it's easier on one of the model if I remember right. I can't remember if the region mod is the same way, although I have a few saturns and all of them are region 1.

I have the round button model 2.

Also, I cannot find the backup mod on that website. Where can I find it?

I also cant find a cheap Saturn anywhere. The only place seems to be ebay.

If you have a round button Saturn you should be okay. It's the people with oval size one that you can't mod. The 2 or 3 three places that use to carry the mods don't anymore so I'm not sure where you can get one now. :(

http://www.jandaman.com/ still has some Saturn Modchips in stock, but note that they ONLY work in the model 2 Saturn with a 30-something Pin CD-Controller and a bunch of model 1 Saturns with a 21 Pin CDDrive-Connector. I'm not 100% shure which chip you had to check on a model 2. The easiest way to play imports though would be to make a backup with different regioncode. Check google for a Tool to do this. You can just do a discswap if you don't want to use a modchip.

By the way, some people say the swap trick is near impossible on a model 2 Saturn, which is NOT true. I always get the swaptrick working on my model 2 on the first try. So the only mod I've ever had to make on my Saturn was taping the thingie that checks if the CD-Drive is open :)

Round buttons = modchip compatible

with rare exceptions

Ok, you have the easy to mod saturn, so that's a plus. Your simplest options are to buy an Action Replay 4-in-1 cart, which will allow you to play imports without modding your console. The saturn has seperate protection for region and to detect non-legal discs. The AR gets around the region setting. To get by the burn detection, you have two options. You cna open your saturn, and tape down the door switch so it cannot tell if the disc door is open or not. You want it to think it's always closed. This lets you do a swap trick if you want, you need a legal game to do it. Boot with your burn in, wait for the spiining to slow, trade it for the legal, and trade it back when the spinning goes faster. It takes practice, but it works. You can also pull it off with the AR in and thereby play burned imports if i remember correctly, or you can just patch your disc image to your saturn's region before burning, and thereby skip that step. Otherwise, get a modchip. The ones from jandaman work great, and can be installed without solder (and thus be removable) if you just solder a pin or similar to the power wire so it can be secured into the power supply. The blue cord on the mod just need to go right back to the hole next to where it starts on the modboard. I did mine without even soldering it, just wrapped the cord around.

Of course, my modded saturn is acting up now, but it's more something to do with the laser.
