I remember when I was younger And I saved and saved till I had enough money to Spurge on 2 Nes games. Well not having the Know about What game companies were the ones that pumped out the great games I went ahead and got 2 games that had cool looking Covers. So I went off and I pulled the TAGS for none other then
Deadly Towers (Cool looking dude I said Gotta get this) The Other game Was Wrath of the black Manta, ( I was Crazy about Ninjas)
What a dissapointment to come home and play those for about 2 days trying to convince myself that I had got 2 great games. =(
What was more messed up was the fact that I had passed on Mega-Man because I though the Art was so bad looking. From that point on I knew I had to make better buying decisions And Went on Word of mouth and The limited Reviews in game Mags. Does anyone else have a similar story?
Thanks

Most times I buy a game now, I know exactly what I want before I get it. Also, usually i wait until games are used to pick them up now and therefore only see them in spine view. I think when I was buying games for the SMS (that Stealth jet on the cover of Bomber Raid) before the days of the internet, I may have been influenced by box art.

I remember buying a game and just TRYING so HARD to make myself enjoy it because I didn't want to admit they would release something so horrible (NES days, when I REALLY started gaming). Eventually I would give up and just figure that it was an error or I wasn't good enough to play it. At least now I know better! :)

Oh man I did the same thing, denial and loyal Nes Fan.

No, but I have bought original game art because of the game... "Parallax" and "Wizball" originals by Bob Wakelin at home... should really get them framed sometime...

I don't know if I've ever bought a game simply because of the box art, but it does influence my decision a bit if it's a close call between two games. While I know it's not always true, I always felt that if a company couldn't hire someone to do decent box art then they probably didn't spend the money to do a decent game.

Dash Galaxy, I cannot believe I ever picked thast game. It is the worst game for the NES period. But, it probably has one of the best box arts.

Well I will say that the original Mega Man Game Art for the NES was definitely not a purchasing factor (ewwwwwww) but when Working Designs released those string of games for the Sega CD (Lunar1,2, Vay and Popful Mail) I will admit that the presentation of the jewel case had something to do with my purchases of those great titles

I want Kirby Super Deluxe (aka Kirby Super Star) for the Super Famicom just because the box art kicks ass. Kirby a la wood-burning kit! ^_^

I can't remember the last time i went in a gameshop to see what new games there are, I am always informed it seems.
It always hurts to see a kid look at the GBa games, and pick up The Incredibles or Finding Nemo over Metroid or Mario Kart, purely on the face on the box.

Oh my god, someone linked me to this topic and asked me to reply, then i see its 2002, what on earth....

the game box art on mazin wars (megadrive) saw it on a market stall whilst looking for a game to buy with some spare money, saw the front cover and had to have it :)

Very much so! I remember the day when I picked up Wizards and Warriors 2. I stood there looking at the box thinking this guy is huge! Long blond hair, arms that could crush a beer can with just a flex, sertainly this must be a great game. Then I bought it and played it.
It sucked ass! Big time! Horible controls, pointless story, and music to bash one's own head with! To add insult to injury, I eventualy found out, this wasnt some two bit body double on the cover, no! It was Fabio, king of the isle of fecies, and arch enemy of all flying fowl! To this very day, I cringe with fear when one utters the words wizards, warriors and the number 2 in the same sentance.
Then I saw an evil looking face on another box with evil eyes and lots of red and thought to myself, he looks evil, it's all red and so I bought this 'The Guardian Legend' and took it home. Upon inserting and powering up this red evil, I quickly realized this was no fantasy game. No, it was, a SHOOTER! What a splended treat! It played like a shooter, yet ran like Zelda! What happy days they were...
And then there was this fat Russian drinking vodka and spitting fire. What a splended treat. The days with fat plubers and dark sewage pipes were times, I have yet to forget. The memories, how time flies (or is that flys?), yet the games, they still remain.

The cover for BERZERK for the Atari 2600. It has nice tiny bits of robot exploding robot parts. I never cared for the arcade game but after buying this very easy game, respected the arcade game a bit more.

Little Nemo, Castlevania, Crystalis, and Clash at Demonhead all had art appealing to the young DrWily008...bought all four before even playing or hearing anything about them! Never regretted a second of it.
I was also a sucker for anything with a sword, sheild, or helmet on the cover due to my undying love for all things RPG. I too fell trap to the subpar "Deadly Towers"!

hydlide for nes had awesome box art as did bomberman (thought it looked like samus aran)
fortuantly they both ended up being really good games. I became very very adicted to bomberman for weeks to the point I "flipped" the score on my password.

Same here!! The cover for Berzerk was excellent! Atari had some damn good artists during the 'colored box' days. Same thing happened with Star Radiers..... The art was cool AND the box was bigger than other Atari Games... Too bad the game sucked. Hey, I was 8.

I would have to say Lunar Eternal Blue for the playstation one. I saw the cover and it reminded me of the anime I watch so, When christmas came two months later I mentioned to my parents that the only thing I wanted was a single playstation game (They got a bit of a shock when they saw the $90.00 price tag lol).
Thatīs funny - I bought Mega Man b/c of its game art...
But today I wouldnīt buy it for the same reason honestly.

Shadow Hearts: Covenant comes immediately to mind.
The first thing that pops into my head would be Psygnosis! Being big into Amigas back in the days, this developer went to great lenghts to pump out some of the best graphics for game boxes I have seen to date. Not only the art work being superb, I was never let down by a Psygnosis title. You got a game that came in a great looking box and was kick ass to play. I don't really care for scrolling shooters, but I did buy the game Agony for the art and kick ass poster that came with the game. A+ all the way.
