Have you ever bought a game based on hype and ended up hating it?
Luckily thats never happened to me.

Sure have. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. It was hyped like a motherfucker, and I liked the demo. I can not stand the game.
Still have it, though. :)

Got good reviews, and it's Suikoden!

Soul Calibur 2. I was suckered into the hype, played the crap out of it for a month..then i got bored with it and felt the first on Dreamcast was way better

The first grandia for saturn was my favorite rpg of all time and i loved it to death. I was so hyped about the second one i order the limited edition dreamcast import just to play it early. Though when i got the u.s version finally i was kind of dissapointed in it. I don't know maybe because it was only 20 hours or the battle system and story warn't as good as the first one but it didn't feel the same.
An odd part about that game was their was a dungeon named Durham cave. Seeing as my last name is Durham i found it kind of funny.
Legend of Zelda:Ocarina of Time. I didn't really hate it when I got it, I was just disappointed that it wasn't as fun as the previous Zelda games, IMO.

Auto Modellista for the PS2.
It sure was nice to look at and it had some real nice features above and beyond most racing games but I still can't believe how bad the physics in that game are. CHRIKEY!

Two of the worst games I've ever played which were released the same week and all my coworkers were talking about and I heard great things about them:
F-Zero GX
Soul Calibur II
F-Zero GX just did not click with me at ALL.
Soul Calibur II had a TERRIBLY boring unlocking mode and the game was just pretty blah. Oh yeah, and you CANT USE LIZARD IN SINGLE PLAYER. He was my best character. Ring outs every damn round. Fear the Lizard.

Sims Bustin' Out.. I found out, I don't like Sims games as much as I used to.
Viewtiful Joe... Bah.. Just don't feel like playing again after the first time.
Tall: Infinity... I can't get into it.

Poor Metal Gear Solid. Them cyborg ninja and former-KGB-member psychics just can't get no love.

Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes - this game was missing something....something...oh yeah, fun.
GTA: Vice City - same damn game, same shitty graphics. Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and (still black) Michael Jackson couldn't save this one from being just mediocre to me.
F-Zero GX - for all the praise this one had heaped on it, it should have been better than the fuck pie I hold it to be.
Soul Calibur II - It looks good...that's about it.
NBA Street 2 - Looks like crap, plays pretty fun, but there ain't enough meat on the bones for my liking.
Final Fantasy VII - it still can't hold my attention past the first disc.
Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball - this is best used as a graphics demo (no, not because I'm so lame that I'm attracted to virtual women, but because it's a good-looking game). I'm glad I only put 5 bones towards this one.
Devil May Cry - I dunno, doesn't do a thing for me. You can only kill so many puppets or scissor-toting ghosts before you just want to pop another game in.
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance - I'm sorry but American fighting games will NEVER be as good as their Japanese counterparts. I have rarely eyed such shitty character designs (farting fatman will hopefully never become a future staple for the genre).

Oh god, Wind Waker. Spectacle (graphics + sound) = stunning. Gameplay = lobotmized. Story = ridiculous copout.

Viewtiful Joe. I just didnt enjoy it half as much as I thought I would. It was a let down to say the least.
Thats about it. I like most games I buy, and I buy games on what looks good to me, not based on other peoples reviews usually.

Haha... Soul Calibur 2, the game I didnt want but my friends bought for me because they wanted to play it and had no current systems themselves. But I do like it a bit. I never really got into fighting games, besides Super Smash Bros.
I cant really think of a real example. Maybe Sim City 2000 for the SNES, which I think sucked, compared to the original.

I wasn't compltetly disappointed with Wind Waker, but I did find it too short. But I did enjoy the final Gannon battles. Yes, the Puppet boss does count as part of the final battle which makes it one kick-ass battle.
But too much water, and while it was fun to do all that stuff, it was too short. I was hoping the real sequel took place in the future after the water receded (Because I firmly believe the islands were simply tips of mountains and Hyrule was burried under the water.) in the real Hyrule. A huge ass Hyrule. Same gameplay. Same graphics. But more dungeons, and battles and a bigger environment.
But alas.. we're getting the ultra realistic Zelda. Which is cool in its own right, let's just hope it isn't a disappointment.

Kingdom Hearts. My parents bought it for me for Christmas of 2002 to go with my new PS2. I would have taken it back if it wasn't for all the hype. The game was okay, but not worth $50.

I am one to love easy games, but there are 2 hyped games that I bought and were way too easy:
Wind Waker
Enter the Matrix
I had a friend that got his copy of Matrix the day it came out, and he had around 10 hours of playing with codes. I played through it once without codes, clocked at about 3 and a half hours with Ghost on Normal and around the same with Niobe. I went back to it and played through again because I was short on money and think that game was pretty cool (I don't care what anybody says, the game itself I enjoy). I clocked in at around 1 hour and 30 minutes. I beat the game in one sitting. Any game of this style should NEVER be beaten in one sitting at that time.
I still haven't beat Wind Waker because I don't feel like picking it back up at the moment. The puzzles in the game are super easy to figure out. The bosses give no challenge at all. Just for the record, I am at the point where I am collecting the shards of the thingy for my master sword, I stopped playing after I got collector's edition because I thought it would be fun to play through all of them sequentially, but when I got stuck on the 4th dungeon of the original and have never had a problem getting through any dungeons in Wind Waker, it made me realize that it was way too easy. Oh yeah, being on that stupid boat for 5 minutes at a time to get to a level sucked balls.
