I was talking with a friend of mine and this idea for a topic came up.

How much of your retro console/computer collection is the same units you owned as a kid? In other words, how much of your collection has been "in the family" since it was new?

One of the Atari 2600's I own (my only 6 switcher) was the one my dad bought for us back in 1978. Although they've all been mixed together, about 30-40 of the carts I have are also ones from my childhood.

One of the two NES units I own was my original one from the 80's. The other one was my wife's from the same time. There's no way to tell them apart -- they both blink. We pooled what carts we both had at the time and have a pile of about 20.

All my C64 stuff is the stuff I originally owned back in the mid 80's. My SNES is the one I bought from Best Buy in 1994. Of course my PSX, N64, and everything newer than that are all the same ones I still own today.

What about you? Which retro treasures of your date way back?

My NES + about 40 of the games are the originals I had since I was a kid, the SNES + about 20 games are the originals that were purchased in the 90's, N64 + about 10 games and also my Genesis 3 system.

The great thing is, we always kept the boxes in the attack so all my "original" games are complete for the most part.

I've sold and repurchased PSX systems, games, Game Gear systems and games. Everything else has pretty much been purchased "used" but is new to me.

The only classic system that has survived it's stay with my family is the atari 800xl cause my dad went psycho went my mom suggested selling it. He will not let it go =D. Which is good. Everything else my damn mom talked her way into selling off somehow or another.

Every unit I own was the first one I had of that unit. All of them. I've never traded a console in yet and I don't ever plan to unless it's a spare. I always keep my original systems.

My original stuff is mostly hardware too. My Atari 1200XL (actually not new, my dad bought it used in 86 or so) still has all the original games and my NES, SNES, and N64 are all my originals, but I don't think I have any NES games left from when I bought them.

Well, I started out gaming with my brother's Amiga 500, and I still have it today (it was one of the very first 500s sold in 1986). Besides that, I only have my current gen consoles bought new, all the other stuff was bought used within the last 3 or 4 years.

I still own my original NES System I got back in 1987. It's in great shape, aside from the blinking screen. I also own 2 of the original games I got with it. My PS2 is also original as well as about 13 games.

My NES collection contains my original NES from Christmas '87 - in perfect working order, and 10 of the 11 games I had during my childhood - all complete and in mint condition. The 11th game didn't make it because it was stolen by a supposed "friend" right before he moved away many years ago

The only thing from my childhood is my Super NES I got brand new as a birthday present in 1993. The original controllers and Super Mario World cart that came with the system died several years ago and were replaced, but the console's still there. :)

The cart I've had the longest is Super Mario All-Stars, which I've had for almost 10 years. It was a used copy though, so I'm not sure if it counts.

Absolutely nothing I owned as a kid is still in my collection. This isn't where my focus was regarding collecting. I love comics. Games were great and I spent a lot of time playing them but I didn't see a need to collect them. I didn't read the game mags or buy many new games anyway. It was just fun. When I got sick of it, I found someone to sell it to.

My TurboGrafx-16 and all of my original games (27 if I remember correctly), except for Yo' Bro. That game sucks, and I sold my original copy at a garage sale.

The cool thing is that now I own every single Turbo game except for Magical Chase and Hawiian Island Girls (which is supposed to be in transit x_x ).

Retro stuff only? My NES and a handful of games.

When my sisters and I parted ways, they took the Atari stuff and lots of the Nintendo games which is okay, since I had lots of other systems by then (DC, N64, Genny, SNES....). I got most of it back through rebuying though.

aside from the commodore 64 that my dad brainlessly threw out a few years back(disk drive stopped working, didnt know it takes carts too) all of my CONSOLES are the originals i had, and i still have all the GAMES. i sold the original gameboy and game boy colour systems, to finance an SP, since there's no point in using an old black and white gameboy, or non-backlit game boy colour, when the sp has a backlight.....but i've still got the games.
Well, one exception. i no longer have the busted-up genesis console i had back then. i sold that one this past jan. and kept the one that came with my sega cd....which is in much better shape and happens to be one of the ORIGINAL release genesis systems!

My Genesis, Sega CD and N64 are all original purchases, and probably about half my games now. But my real treasure is my Coleco and Atari expansion module that my parents originally bought for my older sister when it first came out. My parents would only let us use it on snow days and school vacations so it's got some great memories attached to it. We didn't keep the original game boxes unfortunately but we stored the games in these strange cases that my parents got with the system. I love playing Q*bert and Word Feud to this day.

Pretty much everything!

Well I guess at this point it'd be more accurate to say about 80% or so. But yeah, the majority of my videogames that I have are all the original ones I had as a kid, and everything I've bought throughout my life until now.

Like I said.. I don't "collect". I simply buy current new videogames I like (for years) and just never get rid of them :P

I guess it's a matter of interest. I love the 2600 obviously.. however there are a huge amount of 2600 games I don't actually have. BUT, I think I have every single 2600 game that I was ever even remotely interested in (i.e. the arcade conversions). The rest.. well I don't really care about to be honest. For example, I wouldn't mind a copy of say... Chase the Chuckwagon (I'll take anything) but do I care that I don't have it.. or even WANT it? Not really. I have what I wanted. The rest I can play on a cuttle cart or something.

And that's about it :)

In terms of systems, my SNES, N64, GB Pocket, GBA, GameCube, and PS2 are original, so that leaves my Odyssey2, NES, and Genesis as rebought. As for games, it's split a bit more. All my GBA, GameCube, PS2 (and for that matter PS1) games are originals, but it varies on some other systems. Most of my N64 and Game Boy games are originals, while on my SNES, a good deal are reboughts. My NES, Genesis, and Odyssey2 stuff is, obviously, all rebought.

Gee, I'm nothing compared to you guys. :)

I don't tend to hold on to my old stuff. Today I'm perfectly happy to play NES, SNES, C64, and the like on emulators.

The oldest game I have in my collection would be Command and Conquer for CD-ROM, bought new in 1995 for the PC, and my very first CD-ROM game.

For consoles, the oldest thing I have now is Final Fantasy Tactics for the PSX, bought in January 1998.

well everything from the PSX and up was bought new so I'll skip that stuff.

the rest:

Atari 2600 4 switch woodgrain with about 35 games and one of those woodgrain storage units with the smoked plastic covers. unfortunatly all boxes and manuals were long ago trashed.

Commodore VIC-20 w/box, no manuals. never had any games or any software period for this one. though I do now.

Commodore 64 w, disk drive and Magnavox monitor and dozens of disk games. all boxes are long gone but I've got several manuals.

NES w/power pad and about 40 games. all complete, some sill have shrink wrap on the boxes.

Sega Genesis model 1 and about 15 games, all complete.

My original NES and Genny have been hooked up since the day I bought them. the rest were packed away from time to time.

This topic makes me sad. :( Reminds me how stupid I was to trade off older stuff for newer stuff when I was a kid. I only have my original SNES and a few games from back in the day. However I am only a coleco away from having everything (and more) I did as a kid. :)

Everything I personally owned back in the day is still part of my collection. That doesn't include the NES and all the games because it belonged to my brother and he sold it all. :( So... I have:

My SNES bought in '93 or '94 with I believe 17 out of 67 games bought new (not including my 15 SFC games which were likely all used anyway). I threw away most of those 17 boxes, and some of the manuals got kind of screwed up too. :( I doubt I have the SNES packaging either (with the exception of the instructional materials).

My Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance were all bought new (and all were gifts from my mom). 18 out of 32 Game Boy and Game Boy Color games were new (again, most boxes are gone). 6 of 8 GBA games were new (all boxes and manuals saved).

My Neo Geo Pocket Color was new when I bought it about a year ago on eBay. I think Metal Slug: 1st Mission was new too. Some of the other games may have been new, but they came with only the plastic case.

My Genesis 3 was bought new, but the only game I got new was the Majesco re-release of Castlevania: Bloodlines. :/

My N64 was bought new the very first day it came out (actually I got it on September 29, 1996 because they said I could get it early ^_^ ). I'm not sure if I still have the box or not. 24 out of 59 were bought new (although this is including the 10 new copies of Wonder Project J2 I have :P ). I have most of the games complete still, but I threw out a few of the boxes for the early games (Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Pilotwings 64, Quest 64, Cruis'N USA, etc.) I finally learned mid-way through the N64 lifespan that throwing away boxes is stupid. :/

My PSX was bought new in '98 or '99. It's hard to recall what was brand new or used. When I bought used, I was very particular about condition, so most of my used games look just as good as the ones bought new. The majority of my 75+ games were bought new, though.

My Dreamcast was also bought new. 7 of the 11 games were new, I think. o_O I'm not much of a Dreamcast collector, and I don't play it much either, for no apparent reason. :/

My GameCube was bought new by my boyfriend. 10 of the 12 games were new, if memory serves. Most were bought right at release for the MSRP too; he's crazy. O_o

My Japanese PS2 was bought new online, and my 2 imports were also new, as to be expected. :P

That's about everything. Numbers could be a little screwy because I wasn't really counting my boyfriend's old stuff that was bought new, despite that they're a part of my collection too. I don't really have a way of knowing what was new and what wasn't. He had a lot of brand new systems too, but a lot have moved on to that console set-up in the sky. :P

My parents gave away my Atari 2600 and Odyssey2 collections shortly after I acquired my NES. At the time, I was in love with the NES and didn't really play the older systems anymore, but I still wanted to hang onto them. Unfortunately my father hated clutter and I felt pressured to part with the stuff, so I eventally let my parents donate them to some family I didn't know. Hopefully they went to a good home.

With the NES, I decided that was NOT going to happen again and I clung to it for dear life. LOL I've held onto pretty much everything since then (and rebuilt my Atari and O2 collections too).
