Did the Megadrive (in Europe) switch to cardboard boxes like the Genesis did?

I don't know, but Ive never seen a megadrive game in a cardboard box. I tried looking up a couple of megadrive games on eBay that came in cardboard boxes here in the US but all I saw was plastic clamshells.

Yes the only cardboard boxed games were Sonic & Knuckles for some odd reason.

The others were ACCOLADE releases, practically all of them came in cardboard boxes e.g. Onslaught, Winter Challenge, Lotus?, That Film Somethingtodo with Soldier?? erm lol !

But it would be well to note, that these games were released in the same packaging as they were in USA (America)

But I had some Accolade games in decent packaging, not cardboard crap - maybe they released two versions?

Cant say ive ever seen any, ive got tonnes of megadrive titles and have had loads over the years that have all been in the plastic cases. I must say this was something i always hoped nintendo would do, the carboard boxes they came in were shite!

The early unlicensed Accolade/Ballistic games in cardboard boxes are 100% identical to the US releases (indeed most of the boxes say 'for use on the Genesis or Megadrive'). They switched to plastic cases when they became a licensed thrid-party.

As several others have said, the only other game in cardboard packaging was 'Sonic & Knuckles', possibly because of the unusual cart-shape (although Virtua Racing was in a plastic case).

I was reminded of another slight variation today when I picked up a copy of Budokan: The Martial Spirit - the very early (1990) EA games were in plastic cases that are slightly taller than a standard MD box, and have a padded cover (like the Action Replay carts) and a vac-formed inside that holds the cart & manual.
