I am interested in documenting Video Game Store demo units. I am talking about timer based multiple cart systems. These would allow the player to sample multiple game cart but would also cycle through them when not in play.

I am aware of the following:

DS-16 - a six cart unit and Sega Genesis

M-82 - a twelve cart unit for the NES

Do you know of any other similar systems? What are the names? Also, do you even recall demo units for cart based systems with similar "cycle" features?

There's the M8, which is a board based NES demo unit (no interchangable carts, justa big PCB). This was the precursor of the M82 (or more likely the M8 #2), and you can see that by the age of the games found in the M8.

The Famicom has the Famicom Box, but that's more of a hotel unit.

The 2600 has a changer, but I think it's retail. But I think there is a 2600 demo unit out there.

The SMS has one as well. Pretty sure you can change the carts. Don't know the part number.

The DP guide lists a SMS unit. Does anyone know the part number?

Can the Atari unit "cycle" thru games on a timer?

Also, are there any store demo systems like this for the SNES ot TG-16?

Ask DP. He has one, but I think it's in SJ. You may have to wait until CGE to find out.

Don't know about the Atari unit... but I'm sure someone else on this board will.

TG16, I'm fairly sure, no. SNES is when the demo units were replaced with the POP systems with a single game (i.e. the start of the Not for Resale carts).

wouldn't the SNES be competing with the Genesis? There must have been some sort of multi-cart system for the SNES for the home market... (?)

The Genesis had various "Jukebox" systems to let 6 to 8 carts be played on a home system. Did the SNES release anything similar for the home market?

Were there? Of course there's the DS-16 demo unit, but what else? Outside of the advertised Video Jukebox by ASG (which, despite anything, I've never heard of or seen anyone actually owning/finding one) I can't think of anything. I'd be interested to see some pictures of what else there supposedly is.

Also, regarding the SMS unit - I want one. Gimme gimme, plzkthx.

I also doubt that the ASG Jukebox ever existed. THere are many ads but no actual units!

I insist there must be some equivalent for the SNES!

I have just gotten a SNES demo unit with a matching TV too. The unit is only for single games though.

There's a good Knowledge Base article on the SMS demo unit.

There's 2 different models of the SMS Store Display - one has 16 card slots, while the other has just 3. Both have 16 cartridge slots.

for the atari 2600 there are 3 "Demo" units that i know of.

sears/atari 2600 POP display- HUGE 4 foot x 6 foot display that has a "Brain" that has about 40 ROMs on it. not sure if these can be made for time based (brain settings? still have yet to get mine set up), and don't cycle thou the games!

starpath's demo unit- small unit that hooks up to the atari that cycles through the games and you can play some of them. but not time based! (if i remember right)

Imagic display unit, about a 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 foot unit that is time based! but don't cycle through the games. holds 24 game carts.
