Pirate hacks indeed. Mostly worthless.

Yep. They are pretty much just sprite hacks of games. I think I saw a SMB4 or 5 or 6 or something that was just a hack of Kid Niki 3.

I think NESWorld (http://nesworld.parodius.com) has some screenshots somewhere.

Just to correct an above post. Super Mario Bros 4 is a SMB3 hack, but not like any hack that you have seen before. SMB4 is listed in Classic Gamers Magazine, and has been aptly titled Mario Adventure. DahrkDaiz (The programmer) didn't simply hack SMB3, but created a whole new world from it. The levels rotate between night and day, rainy clear or snowy weather, and the worlds are completely remade. He spent a total of Nine months creating it for his own enjoyment, then released the patch. There is an Already patched version available for download at http://www.gencoms.com/classizgamerz/roms.htm
It's under Super Mario Bros. 4 on the list.
Have fun!

I think SMW was referred to as SMB4 at some point during its development cycle (perhaps in Japan?), and some Asian pirate undoubtedly make a hack called SMB4 long before Mario Adevnture was ever released. But at no time (aside from that page you linked to) have I seen Mario Adventure referred to as SMB4. Such a name would only lead to confusion, I think.
I posted a review (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=27378) of Mario Adventure here a few months ago, actually. It remains both technically impressive and stupidly difficult. I would highly recommend Legend of the Blob Bros (an SMB2 hack) and Demo World: The Legend Continues (a truly amazing reworking of SMW) instead.

I thoroughly agree iwth it being Stupidly difficult, which is what keeps me coming back to it! It was referred to as Super Mario Bros 4 in Classic Gamer Magazine. http://classicgamer.com/

I know there all hacked titles, but in the natural line of super mario, wouldn't Yoshi's island be SMB 5 and mario rpg be SMB 6?
(Or maybe Mario 64 is smb6) gee's who knows! LOL

I really liked the number system with the games, was pissed when the did away with it.
The Super Famicomicom version of SMW says Super Mario Bros. 4, right on the box. I think that is clear enough for us all.
I recall seeing original artwork for Yoshi's Island that said Super Mario Bros. 5 with the boxy multicolored caveman letters that are no synonymous with mario games, but they got rid of that I guess...
It would be nice if a new platformer was made for the GBA with a new number. they should start at 7.

Wow.. that "Super Mario Adventure" ROM on that site is some of the most unique levels I've seen in a Mario game. Especially World 7 when you get to the "SURVIVE THIS!!" levels. The bombs, the platforms. Wow.. makes me glad Nintendo didn't really use designs like that. The games would be too hard!

And despite it being so difficult, the game is amazingly addictive! CURSE YOU MARIO DEVELOPERS! (even if they are hacks)
But like I stated, it's no simple hack. I try explaining to people that's it's an entirely new adventure, but people quickly assume it's SMB3 with Kirby being in Marios place or something. BLEH!

I'm going to link to this, because it really is worth checking out (perhaps even moreso than Mario Adventure).

Demo World: The Legend Continues (http://fusoya.cg-games.net/lm/dw.html)I downloaded that damn thing and was all happy until I found out I had to convert the ROM into another ROM first before I could patch the thing. Using an included WINDOWS ONLY FUCKING PROGRAM. God damn mother...
Now I'm pissed. The bastard.

Actually the NES/Famicom pirate SMB 4 to me is that Armadillo-hack.

Oh. Um. Surely it must run under Wine?

Mac user. Not Linux user. There is no Wine for Mac. And the only usable Windows emulator is owned by Microsoft and slower than hell.

IPS patcher to ROM for PC AND Mac users. Enjoy.I'm glad you like me, but I allready have THAT. What I don't have is that stupid EXE that comes with the patch to convert the ROM..
From the ReadMe...
First off, DO NOT patch the original ROM with the included IPS file!
The reason is that I used DWTLC to test LM with ROMs greater than
4 MB. But since this involves moving the banks around, an IPS file
for the hack would include most of the original ROM in it. To avoid
the issue, I've included a patch meant to be applied to a ROM that
has already been expanded to 6 MB.
Thus, you should take the original Mario World US ROM and use Lunar
Expand (included in this zip file for convenience) to convert the
ROM to a 48 Mbit ExHiROM (it's the top right option in the program).
THEN apply the IPS file to it.
And that's all there is to it! ^^
In other words, I have to STILL use a Windows EXE to convert the ROM. I already have the IPS program.

LOL@AND THATS ALL THERE IS TO IT!!
Well I am sorry Jasoco.... the only other option I have is
http://www.romhack.de/utilities/ips.php
Which is in German, but all the programs with American flags by them are in engliush. There are NUMEROUS IPS patches on there. I just got my WinXP one from there, and its the best I have used. It's a visual, which I have never seen before. They have quite a few listed as Mac proggies, but I dont run a Mac (Win and Linux) so I don't know what OS version or anything.
ONTO SOMETHING DIFFERENT THOUGH!!!!
If you haven't played the Mario Adventures rom by Dahrkdaiz, then you haven't been punished by the inexplicable amount of diggicult in puzzles and the grossly over exaggerated amount of enemies he puts into his levels. Then you probably haven't experienced a Mario game with weather changes, and time changes. And if you HAVE put yourself through the keyboard poundings of Mario Adventure, then I have something for you also. Super Luigi : The Red Coin Quest.
Here DarhkDaiz has once again spent months hacking and slashing at SMB3 to bring you a wholly new game. And this one actually is wholly new. Unlike Mario Advance, there is now an Oxygen meter for swimming, numerous item boxes, and as the title suggests, a new concept to completing the game. No longer just fighting to get to the end, now you must locate the Red Coin in each level to progress. Do not be weary though! The puzzles are more puzzling, but Dahrkdaiz has lifted his scourge of a milion enemies, bob-ombs and Bullet Bills. You don't have a patcher? Don't worry. Just like with Mario Adventures, I have already converted the file fo ryou, and it can be downloaded as a .NES file from here.

Enjoy!

Ooh. Does every level still end with a Boom-Boom? (I was getting awfully sick of those Boom-Booms.)
(I thought MacOS X could run many Unix-ish programs. Oh well.)

(I thought MacOS X could run many Unix-ish programs. Oh well.)It can run X11 apps. But of course, it requires knowledge of actually INSTALLING those programs which I have absolutely none of.. Knowledge that is. I have never been able to successfully install any X11 app ever. I never had any luck with Linux either. I'm ashamed to call myself a geek. :embarrassed:

Well, they do make Knoppix for the PPC (http://www.confederatelinux.com/linux/knop-ppc.htm)... But I guess that's a story for another thread.

that super mario one is quite interesting! i will be playing this game from start to finish, including finding all the secrets, BTW, i found something strange. after you have the option to automatically save after beating the first castle, start up the original smw rom, and you will start at castle #6, wendys castle. strange!

Oh, there's a considerable number of secrets! There's a FAQ for the game somewhere out there, although it was rather difficult to find; alternatively, Acmlm's board (http://board.acmlm.org/) has a really long thread about it.
