I'd suggest installing Spybot S&D with TeaTimer, then installing Pop-Up Blocker and maybe even PeerGuardian, and moseying on down to ROMnation.net.

At least that's where I went last time I was looking for this sort of thing.

And no, I'm not kidding about installing all that protective gear first. Trust me, you really need to.

I agree. I know that the 6 in 1 games are at Romnation. You might find something else for your NES desires are http://www.GenComs.com/classicgamerz/roms.htm

www.vimm.net

they have all the roms your looking for except for the myriad 6 in 1 and you don't need all that protection.

Now this is a place that I can help you.

http://www.Nintendo.com

They have a list of all the Officially Licensed releases. If you can't find it, contatact me through one of the messengers.... I have it backed up.

Don't mind me. Somebody clicked on that link above and it appeared in my referral logs, and I'm bored so I checked it out.

I'm curious just how many official US NES games there are as well. I had come to this site in the past looking for the answer but I'm too cheap to buy their collectors guide. My goal has always been to have every official US NES ROM, but the existence of unlicensed NES games clouds that a bit. I doubt such games (mostly by Tengen) would be listed on Nintendo's web site, though to me they seem as official as any Nintendo licensed game.

771 is accurate enough. Depends on what you count and don't count. NOA won't mention unlicensed games, and, judging by the SNES list they have, may even miss some licensed games.

Nintendo's "official" list is missing the licensed Tengen games (still sour after 15 years?) and perhaps others. I wouldn't trust any list from Nintendo.

The games that Tengen made, are on the list, but under the Licensed Development name. Such as Ms Pac-Man being under the name Namco and Gauntlet II being under the name Mindscape. Also, I think it was Tengen (or Taito) that made the Tetris game and released for the NES, but the licensed version was by Nintendo themselves.

Namco Ms. Pac-Man and Tengen Ms. Pac-Man are VASTLY different. Tengen's version is superior in every way. They are two different games, really.

And what about RBI?

I may have missed them but I didn't see any of the WWF games for the NES or WCW Wrestling for that matter. Why would they have left those out?

771 is the most common number I've heard, but everyone seems to have their own number. It all depends on what you consider a variant. The two 6 in 1's are identical programs, just different packaging. Do you count them as two different games? Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom -- same thing: Mindscape and Tengen versions are identical. One game or two? Then there are classic re-releases, color variants, etc, etc, etc.

Do some research, decide what 'counts' for you, then count 'em up...

That's your number!
